Neil Lennon, big and bad enough

463

Neil Lennon is big and bad enough not to need any help from you or me, but he has a job on his hands.  He will prepare a squad to face Hearts twice in the next eight days, which he acquired from Brendan Rodgers in February, and which Brendan largely acquired from Ronny Deila, which is wilting before our eyes.

Injuries abound, the latest, Scott Brown’s broken toe, symptomatic of this season.  Brendan tied himself in all sorts of knots in August, revealing fewer of his intentions to you or me than to Moussa Dembele.  Dedryck Boyata went on strike during the latter, and unsuccessful, stage of our Champions League qualification campaign.  Then Moussa went so off message Brendan decided it was best for him to leave town.

Have you worked in an environment like this?  I have not, but these are just the things we know about.  I doubt it was an easy shift for Brendan to lift the squad as well as he did for the Europa League, League Cup and League campaign.

Then, to cap it all, Brendan turned on his heels a day before we were due to visit Tynecastle and four days before a Scottish Cup visit to Easter Road.  You may have worked in an environment like this, but I doubt you have successfully managed one.

It was demeaning for Neil Lennon to have to defend himself this week.  Not to himself, but to the goldfish who are so unaware of the environment or parameters he has worked in.

Celtic won their first treble the day I was born, but I was 34 before they won their third.  No club has ever won Treble Trebles in a row.  Celtic have never won three consecutive Scottish Cups.  The measure of our current success is so great it is difficult to quantify.

In 1995 we finished fourth in the league, two points behind Hibs and three ahead of Falkirk.  But we went to the Scottish Cup Final that season and won the most magnificent dreary game played.  This is football.  Success is neither easy nor linear and it is never entitled.  Appreciate these times.

Bring lots of change with you on Sunday, this is your one and only chance to buy a Foundation VIII Badge!

    Bizarre isn’t it.

Spolied, spoiled support having to hang around tomorrow for twenty minutes waiting on the Champions Podium getting assembled?, without a deserter and with a caretaker manager taking ‘undeserved’ bows and plaudits.

  2. BSR @ 12:34 PM,

I’m not posting conjecture, I said quite clearly what was reported as happening, what John McGinn said happened.

After John McGinn went to Aston Villa, Brendan Rodgers and John McGinn both said, and it’s a matter of record, that John McG was expecting to be Celtic Player.

Here’s a piece of non-conjecture a month before JMcG went to Aston Villa…

“Hibernian manager Neil Lennon expects Celtic to make a third bid for Scotland midfielder John McGinn.

McGinn was missing from the Hibs side that romped to a 6-1 first-leg win in their Europa League qualifying round tie with NSI Runavik.

Lennon insisted his player was not 100% fit with a thigh injury, but admits he has been affected by the speculation.

“He’s a human being. It’s a huge club interested in him, the biggest in Scotland, the champions,” said Lennon.

“There has been a substantial bid but it doesn’t meet our valuation, so it’ll be playing on his mind because it’s impossible not to.

“The ball is firmly in Celtic’s court. Our club have made our stance clear. I would expect Celtic to come again.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers conceded Hibs are entitled to demand more for their prized asset, after rejecting a second bid believed to be in the region of £2m.

“John’s a very good player, but he’s a Hibs player, and they have every right to decide what their valuation of him is, like we did with Stuart Armstrong,” said Rodgers”

What I said was Celtic were a day late and a dollar short and I stick by that.

Maybe you could quote the “Celtic sources” that will back up the point that Celtic did all they could to get him.

I’ll tell you in advance I’m not going to accept the ones that say Rod Petrie moved the goalposts and demanded, £4.5 Million for him;)

  6. On Lenny ; it shows zero ambition and he would be Lawwells puppet.

He was eased out last time as the football was diabolical. He was in the regular habit off turning up late for training and showed zero interest in academy.

Spoke to plenty of Celtic fans and nobody wants him. Nothing personal just business.

    BBC? ( here’s what happened )

I got text messages, as we all did all summer long that McGinn was signing the next day the next, the next, the next , the next.

All due to conjecture, its a bit like Rafa Benitez yesterday, Davie Moyes tomorrow.

Neil Lennon’s quote was made sometime before deadline day, and to use BBC as the bible definition of what happened doesn’t cut it for more discerning Celtic fans, dodging Scottish bullets on the streets.

Brendan Rodgers is on record as having called John McGinn on deadline day, he was told that McGinn was signing for Aston Villa

What was the purpose of the phone call if Celtic had not matched AV’s bid

“ Gonnae sign for Celtic John?……..even although our bid is less than Aston Villa’s? and Hibs wullnae accept it ”

The Olympiakos game that evening (or was it the next) was dire no matter your opinion, we haven’t heard Celtic’s official version and its unlikely we ever will.

  14. BSR @ 1:18 PM,

    Think your missing the point.

The leader raised the sceptre of the ’18 summer transfer debacle.

I made a comment on it with my views. The tensions between the egos of PL an BR had fuelled this.

They were both behaving like petulant teenagers.

I mentioned the McGinn, Boyata and Dembele bids to clarify my point. EK Bhoy picked up on the McGinn thing. He did not accept my point that there was a fall out over this and he said John McGinn had wanted to go south.

    My point is…

Four weeks before Aston Villa bid Celtic bid for John McGinn.

Celtic were in the driving seat and according to Lenny Hibs had made their stance clear.

Brendan Rodgers obviously thought we should just pay the money and get him in before he was Cup tied.

Peter Lawwell obviously didn’t, he took a different negotiating stand.

Obviously tensions between the two men were rising high.

I make no judgement, but I didn’t come up the Clyde in a Banana Boat and just because someone tells me black is white, no matter how much I’d love to believe it… I don’t, the problems of an analytical mind I suppose.

Sick of reading about John mcginn. Let it go.

You like most Celtic fans appear to miss the point. I know, just like you, that both Celtic FC and the Boys Club had totally separate corporate structures. No one is contesting that.

Did you even try and answer the very simple question I asked? I’m not having a dig here, this wasn’t the 60s or 70s, this was 1986 over a decade after the founder of the Boys Club was asked to leave his position because of serious concerns regarding his behaviour towards young boys. I’ve often wondered who ‘asked him to leave’. There was a tale that has done the rounds on here and other sites that it was Jock that ejected the founder of the Boys Club out of Celtic Park. Why would Jock have done that if Celtic had no influence over the Boys Club?

Why did Celtic feel it was appropriate to investigate allegations made against individuals that had no connection to the club. That brief statement in the Celtic View sounded more like a threat to other publications than a truly honest account of dealing with those allegations. Why did Celtic feel the need to publicly back those in charge of the Boys Club when by all accounts they were aware of historical allegations against its founder?

Did they make any attempts to contact current (at that time) or former members of the Boys Club, or did they just interview those in positions of power at the Boys Club. At what point in time in the yrs prior to any charges being brought or the abusers being convicted was the club aware of any issue and what did or didn’t the club or individuals within the club do?

We have an opportunity to set the standard for dealing with historical child abuse issues in football, we should be proactive in searching for the truth about what went on under the noses of our clubs guardians at the time. Hiding behind the technicalities of legal entities is simply not good enough.

It isn’t a subject that any of us really care to get to involved in as it really is a repulsive subject. But to try and ignore it or use whataboutary to justify our silence on understanding what went on aren’t the actions of who I thought we were as a support.

The victims deserve to know whether Celtic played any role in hiding the actions of their abusers from authorities. I certainly hope that the answer to that question is no but to get to the truth we know that means we have to ask uncomfortable questions. That is the least we as a support should do. Whether we like it or not this happened, it was carried out by people who were given consent by our board to use our name. That at least makes us responsible to ensure the victims get full justice. As Ernie Lynch has stated this morning surely we had a duty of care to the youths who were drawn to this boys club as a result of Celtic FC allowing them to use our name.

Ps, I haven’t mentioned compensation, that is a totally different issue that shouldn’t get in the way of finding out how a a group of child abusers were able to abuse children using our name for almost 30yrs under the noses of our club.

  32. I have one very simple take on the John McGinn situation.

I have no inside info on the machinations that went on in the lead up to his signing for Villa.

All, I know for sure is that there was a late attempt by people at Celtic to usurp his Villa signing- that we can all agree on, I think. Whether it was a day late or a dollar short, is arguable, but the simple bottom line is that John had , at least 2 choices, sign for Villa or come back and sign for Celtic.

    He chose Villa.

He may have done so because the wages were better or he saw it as a team he could break into more readily, but, he had the choice and he made it.

Good luck to the lad!- but that’s the end of it for me- once a better offer was negotiated (by Villa) he made the choice. Petrie might have made it harder for Celtic to get at him, and Peter Lawwell’s salary bid may have made it harder for McGinn but neither made it impossible for John McGinn to sign for Celtic.

John McGinn turned us down- I don’t hate him. I don’t take a stand that “he’ll never be forgiven”. But he means nothing to me now- just another Scot playing down South.
