Neil Lennon era ends

1817

Neil Lennon ‘got’ Celtic.  He was a rookie appointment, and the early weeks were far from comfortable, a Hampden defeat to Ross County looked like an ominous early sign, but from the start of his first preseason he didn’t look back.

He was a hugely successful Celtic manager in Scotland and in Europe.  The Barcelona team of the last six years, possibly the greatest team in history, were at their peak when they visited Celtic Park in November 2012. Neil came up with the game plan which brought Celtic victory and raised our profile across Europe.

What he had to endure off-field during his time at Celtic was atrocious and a blight on our society.  But he overcame it.  He stuck it out when you or I may have left, and now he leaves on his own terms – an undisputed winner.

More at another time on who next, but if we get a man nearly as capable we will be doing well.

Take care, Neil.

  1. While I am disappointed that Neil is leaving its clear that the boards lack of ambition has helped him come to a decision.

A appointment that lawwell can control will follow and a long bitter hard season awaits.

Celtic are slowly dimishing thanks to that lack of ambition.

    It’s very sad.

I would like to see the job advertised, you would be amazed probably at who would be interested. But PL will appoint someone he can control,as is the norm now.

  5. Thoroughly enjoyed the wee mans tenure . He has done a magnificent job and delivered success to our club under circumstances no other manager has ever endured or is likely to be subject to !!

Will he miss Celtic undoubtably YES will he miss Scotland the Scottish mainstream media the wider Scottish publics perception of him the Scottish governments fantasy policy of One country many cultures !! CERTAINLY NOT !!!

The Neil Lennon memoirs will be a blockbuster so Scotland be warned the TRUTH WILL BE OUT THERE !

    SOON VERY SOON !!

  6. By the way the clubs sychophantic statement is pathetic.

Isn’t it funny they waited until season book renewal time had been completed.

We are being taken for a ride.

A thousand apologies if I’m wrong but weren’t you among the skeptics about NL’s appointment citing more or less the exact same reasons as you just have?

  8. Great to see so many old faces back on following todays news.

Revisiting the recent past in the light of Neil’s departure…

    Conjecture Time…

Johann’s leaving likely with the knowledge of NFL leaving.

Samaras’s departure was likely inevitable in that case since he was an NFL favourite and his contract was up.

Scott Brown digging Neil Lennon out from the back of the podium to hand him the SPL trophy and put him centre stage. Did the players know?

Neil Lennon standing at the very back of the Trophy podium looking at the medal round his neck. Was he reflecting on his time and his decision?

Neil Lennon happily posing on the pitch with a tricolor round his neck that his son put there. He didn’t give a toss for anything the SMSM would say as he was soon leaving.

    ..

On the other hand, despite the conciliatory and united tone in the statement, the club appear to have been caught by surprise: how else can they explain how their PR department were apparently still in bed when Neil’s man broke the news.

Why are the club issuing a statement along with NFL that he will help pick his successor?

Is this to appease the fans and if things go tits up the club can turn round and say ” well Lenny picked him/her” it wisnae our fault.

Tell me why you think Jackie is the man. You’re long on praise for him and short on detail. Stevie Clarke, in terms of managerial ability, could buy and sell Jackie 10 times over.

But I still thing P.L will go for cheap option…..

Re. Stevie Clarke. If Jack McGinn had allowed Davie Hay to sign Stevie Clarke and Joe McLaughlin from Chelsea -instead of telling the media that Davie would have to pay for them out of his own pocket if he wanted them – then the Souness revolution would have been strangled at birth. We had a 9 point lead at the time but the team ran out of steam.

    How is Davie Hay healthwise?

I spoke to an acquaintance of David’s a couple of weeks ago and he was in fine health.

I would dearly like to see him in a role at Celtic Park.

He is only 66 and would be a positive addition to the management team.

  20. Conjecture time again

If the club have known about this for some time (and the season ticket renewal scenario has a smell to it that we usually associate with Southside) then the speed of announcing a replacement might be an indicator.

Hard to believe that the club didn’t know and were totally blindsided by O’Reilly’s announcement, so maybe he jumped the gun, or all of this was agreed to and coordinated in terms on who went first (farfetched).

  28. After a night at the jiggin’ DD has made an offer to kojo to quickly build a management team.

kojo has not lost anytime in contacting Fargo, Collie, Auldheid, BRTH, Sydney Tim and TSD.

I’ve no idea why but rumors and innuendo are rife in Twitterland about copies of film exchanging hands on the dance floor.

Negotiations are underway at the CQN gazebo with Estadio with Paul Brennan in line for a position as Club spokesman.

What can you say about the man.Took on the team when we needed somebody to get us back on track, had a difficult start but as you would expect of a man of his character stuck with it and turned things around. This in itself is admirable but not remarkable.

For a rookie manager Neil coped well with what is a high pressure job, again not remarkable in itself. The remarkable thing is how Neil took everything that the small minded contrived to throw at him and refused to walk away when he could have been forgiven for doing so.

In a football sense was Neil the greatest manager we could have hoped for at the time? I will leave that for others on here to answer.

With the benefit of hindsight (I know twenty twenty vision) would I have

wanted any other manager in his place? A definite no.
