Neil Lennon era ends

1817

Neil Lennon ‘got’ Celtic.  He was a rookie appointment, and the early weeks were far from comfortable, a Hampden defeat to Ross County looked like an ominous early sign, but from the start of his first preseason he didn’t look back.

He was a hugely successful Celtic manager in Scotland and in Europe.  The Barcelona team of the last six years, possibly the greatest team in history, were at their peak when they visited Celtic Park in November 2012. Neil came up with the game plan which brought Celtic victory and raised our profile across Europe.

What he had to endure off-field during his time at Celtic was atrocious and a blight on our society.  But he overcame it.  He stuck it out when you or I may have left, and now he leaves on his own terms – an undisputed winner.

More at another time on who next, but if we get a man nearly as capable we will be doing well.

Take care, Neil.

Statement of Intent by board now on new gaffer:

Still adhere to the business plan but show the supporters an ambitious appointment.

Time to think outside the box . Roma done it with Rudi Garcia and they are reaped the rewards this season.

My shortlist would have Laudrup, Montella, Van Basten , Rijkaard , Clarke, Van Marwijk and Hoddle on it.

Laudrup, Van Marwijk, Rijkaard, Clarke and Hoddle out of work just now and no compensation.

Van Hasten at Herrenveen and Montella at Fiorentina. Montella will get a crack at a big club some time in future.

Youngsters at Celtic would thrive having a guy like Hoddle take over.

    …………………………………………..

Good shout with most of those names but I have to seriously disagree with Hoddle. The media would have a field day with him in charge. I’m not doubting his football credentials and his excellent work with youth players but didn’t the man suggest that disabled people were disabled as a result of karma, as a result of how they had led their lives in a previous existence? Wasn’t David Icke a former footballer? Where does he come in the bookies betting list?

  2. Kojo

Jackie has won 28 games from 63 as manager of Dundee Utd. I don’t consider that a ” damn fine record”. 34 wins from 75 with Partick?

Not saying I don’t think Jackie can progress but I’d like to see him spend another couple of seasons learning before he gets near the managers jacket at CP.

Glenn Hoddle would be a fantastic choice IMO, I actually said the same thing at work today. I didn’t raise his name here as I don’t think our board will consider him for a second.

If it was not for the chookys you would not have a team not to support.

Why not not support a team who do not have chookys that support them?

    You would be so happy.

Treating Celtic supporters with such disdain tells the world what a chooky you really are.

  13. I have been lucky enough to meet NFL twice (very briefly), once immediately before a game at CP and once immediately after a game there.

Naturally, he was distracted and impatient when he was asked to come out before the game ( I mean 50 minutes before) and I remained in the background, mainly because it was for my son not myself, but also because I could see and understand his irritation. I stood near the door to the changing rooms and as he walked back through the door at the end of the short PR photo-session, I said “Neil” and he looked at me, “We’re proud of you.” He stopped for a split second, held my gaze and very deliberately said “Thank you.”

    He understood.

  14. Got my head round Neil’s wish to leave the club a number of weeks ago.

While I have been finding myself increasingly agreeing with Neganon on most matters I believe he has got this one entirely wrong.

I lurked on the blog for a number of years before posting to warn against the Tony Mowbray appointment. I wanted instead our Winning Captains – Neil Lennon and Paul Lambert.

The time is right for Neil to go and he goes with my thanks for all he has done and has had to endure. He wants away from Scotland – that’s it.

SFTBs is right on the calibre of club he’ll manage next but there’s more to life than work.

Steve Clarke and Owen Coyle I believe will be hopeful of getting the job. Neither does it for me. Henrik will lift the place and won’t put a foot wrong. Bums on seats too – Box office.

Was up in Dunblane seeing Tommy Gemmell this afternoon with Celtfish. Tommy is taking a copy of his new book to Lisbon and all the Lions will sign it for us. Will give it to Paul and we can auction or something for Mary’s Meals.

As an addition to my previous post,I meant to mention Willie McStay as a candidate as a No 2 or Coach. Not Manager.

Seem to recall he was unceremoniously despatched when NL took over therefore any initial ” bumps in the road ” by our then rookie Manager had to be suffered ( Ross County)

  17. Henrik has been cutting his teeth on smaller sides.Who really is to say how good a manager anyone can be?.I will tell you this, after being at Celtic,Man U,Barca, under the best managers, something must have rubbed off.

    I would go for him.

The alternative is failures.Teams relegated, struggling,or sacked.

Henriks appointment would activate the fans.High season ticket sales, and lets be honest,we only have to beat inferior teams to get to the CL.The SPL isa stick on.No great deal of pressure.

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

What has Coyle achieved in management not a lot in my opinion the fact he is out of work and has been for a while speaks volumes.H.H.

Very strange feeling i have today

  20. My criteria for the job?

    Large cojones.

Someone who seeks attacking football played on the grass. Yet someone who is not adverse to pragmatic ways when required.

Personality: someone who believes Celtic can progress in Europe. We need a positive person. Borderline loons could also enter this personality category. We need thunder and lightning at CP, hence my enquiry about Bilic.

    Go get him Celtic.

  21. with interest in Celtics league campaign diminishing in the absence of any real challenge + the difficulty in challenging in Europe , Celtic board at this stage absolutely need to appoint a manager who will appease the fans and generate some excitement/anticipation.

Only man i know of who would fit that is Henrik Larsson. He would attract players who would otherwise not come to Celtic imo.

Davy Moyes would also be a good appointment tho, i like his work ethic and he would set us up well in Europe (hard to beat like Everton were) – sorry , this is realistic given the financial disadvantage we have on that stage.

  23. Jackie’s record clearly indicates that he is still a work in progress. Too lightweight at the moment for the challenges of the CL.

  24. ‘Go get him’ refers to whoever meets the criteria, not necessarily to Bilic.

If someone is 66 and good enough then that is what they are…..good enough.

I work with a woman who is 73 and she puts in as good and if not better a shift than many.

I will tell her tomorrow she should have packed it all in years ago.

Man Utd should have got rid of Fergie a lot sooner too instead of going through all those barren seasons.

  27. Were on I was indeed sceptical of Neil’s appointment.mi felt celtic we’re taking cheap option. Neil was what I would describe as moderately successful.

But the real question here is why NL is leaving. From what we are seeing he didn’t get the budget he wanted and so has walked.

That tells you all you need to know.

In addition they waited until after season book deadline and the clubs statement once again takes our support for granted.

For those of you looking for a big appointment don’t make me laugh.

Winnings Henrick is NOT the answer but if he is cheap them it will be Henrick.

There is no strategy at work here.

I think Lennybhoys got it right, Clarke has an excellent coaching background and far more experience than Jackie. The fact that he’s unemployed just now is just part of the business, theres plenty of them out there. He was a good player as well and should have got his chance in the Hoops. Anyway, keep up the updates on our young Bhoys in their latest tournament, I went to Tannadice the other week with my son and was well impressed with young Paul, definitely one to keep a hold of.

Kojo. Fella your flogging a dead horse Jackie Mac has not done anything yet in management and there are not many Celtic fans I know who would want him as manager.I myself will just wait and see who we appoint I think it may come as a complete surprise to us. H.H.

Interesting points about Stevie Clarke but he is duller than an ice-cube. We need thunder and lightning.

Agree Jackie did well at Thistle, but still think he hasn’t done enough to walk into CP as manager. We shall see though. Should he be the man, I’ll back him all the way, and hope he takes us to 10 in a row. Still prefer to see an Auldheid in the managers gutties though.

Mind you, I do believe Jackie has given fat Sally a few doings, and that gets a gold star in his jotter.
