Neil Lennon era ends

1817

Neil Lennon ‘got’ Celtic.  He was a rookie appointment, and the early weeks were far from comfortable, a Hampden defeat to Ross County looked like an ominous early sign, but from the start of his first preseason he didn’t look back.

He was a hugely successful Celtic manager in Scotland and in Europe.  The Barcelona team of the last six years, possibly the greatest team in history, were at their peak when they visited Celtic Park in November 2012. Neil came up with the game plan which brought Celtic victory and raised our profile across Europe.

What he had to endure off-field during his time at Celtic was atrocious and a blight on our society.  But he overcame it.  He stuck it out when you or I may have left, and now he leaves on his own terms – an undisputed winner.

More at another time on who next, but if we get a man nearly as capable we will be doing well.

Take care, Neil.

  1. “I will now assist the Club in appointing my successor. As ever, we will need our fans’ support and I am sure they will give the Club and the new Manager the same great backing which they gave to myself.”

Hmmm interesting. Suggests an amicable parting of the ways.

  2. Aghhh ….just made the mistake of tuning into Talkcrap driving back from work.

Predictably our old friend A Durham is useing Neils departure to denigrate Celtic and Neil Lennon . His first caller was a hun who had to phone up to say how over-rated NL was and he was leaving before he had to face the The ranglers .

    Geordie Munro mentioned Di Canio.

I’d have a ‘leetle problem’ with that but it might be worth it just to watch the Daily Record offices explode and Chick Young spontaneously combust :-)

  7. Paul is correct when he says that we should leave talk about Lenny’s successor to another day

Today we should just give thanks and praise for the service that NFL has given us!

Some great Celts are regarded as Hunskelpers but Lenny can be said to have gone one better – he is The Hunslayer!

As others have said despite a very real threat to his life and his family – he continued to do his job and buried them as a result

He also gave us one of our greatest ever nights in European football – when he overcame the might of Barcelona

Lenny leaves on his own terms, a winner both on and off the park!

I wish him and his family every success in the future and look forward to the day when we can show our appreciation for all that he has done for us at CP!

Good luck and God bless you and your family

Stevie Clarke would be my choice as new manager. He has a reputation as an excellent coach down south. He has lots of European experience from his time at Chelsea. He is one of us – a Celtic supporter.

David Moyes would be my second choice. Great record with Everton and before that with Preston. I don’t think his time at Man Utd should be given any consideration whatsoever. He was given no time to make mistakes and learn from them and he inherited a team that was past its best. He also has some European experience. Not sure if he is a Celtic supporter or not but has played for the Club and always speaks well of us. I would be happy if he was appointed.

John Collins would be my third choice as he communicates well, is a good analyst so obviously thinks about the game and reads the game well. He has vital experience of having played abroad and in European competition at a high level. He has managerial experience, has won a trophy with Hibs and I think he will have learned from some of his earlier mistakes such as berating his Hibs players for lack of fitness and humiliating some of them in a press ups competition when he was twice their age. He is his own man and wouldn’t take any nonsense from anybody. He is also a Celtic supporter.

Malky McKay would be my 4th choice. Has good experience down south and has done well in previous appointments but has absolutely no European experience.

Henrik, for me, would have to have managed a club that we at least have heard of ( apologies to those clubs he has managed if that sounds pompous as it’s not meant to be) and perhaps have won some silverware with them. I would absolutely love Henrik to become our manager tomorrow but, preferably, a couple of seasons from now.

    Just my thoughts.

That probably explains the day’s delay in putting the story on the official site.

  10. Theres no way we’ll get Lambert, they money he will be on at Villa will dwarf anything Celtic will be willing to pay. Its a home grown Manager we’ll be looking at. Or a cheap import. Forget anyone from England, they’re on too much dough.

I agree. I think it is not time for Jackie Mac. I was at The Cup Final on Saturday, and his promising young team were naive, and lacked a plan B, when the going got tough.

Very sorry to see Neil leave, but it was inevitable considering the lack of competition in Scotland. The thunder had gone for Neil.

  12. 1. Steve Clarke

    2. Morgen Weighorst

  13. Bombs, Bullets and Barcelona…

When he arrived with the peroxide hair, the baggy shorts and the determination to win we took him to our hearts. He didn’t let us down with his commitment, talent and genuine love of the club. He matured from player to coach to manager and delivered success all along the way.

This at a time when our age old dinasauric rivals had an unscheduled meet with a financial meteor. Their followers had a hate figure and the barrel chested mhan from Larne had to endure terrorist attacks alongside good ole fashioned Glasgow doings. It was a disgrace and highlighted the sectarian underbelly that still exists in Scotland.

He faced them down and won.

He gave us titles, trophies and one of those magical Celtic nights that will live forever. (of course we wanted more, we are Tims!)

All the best Neil in whatever you do and I hope and pray it is only football you have to deal with.

    SFTB,

You can add your name to the small list of reasoned posts.

There are two ways for a manager to leave his post.

    One, being a failure.

Two, being a success and having personal ambition.

    I’m pleased for Neil.

  21. Surely it’s time for another Cqn list of potential CFC managers?!

    An endless list…

    HH!!

  22. Nags…..sorry…I’ll be quick…

Genny Wren goes to Towcester tomorrow night ( 7 50pm) in a 3 mile hurdle. She’s had an awful lot of health problems but seems to be over them. She was scoped this morning and scoped clean. She is running well at home and could just surprise tomorrow night. Would love to be a bit more positive but her history prevents me from going in heavy even though I think tomorrow just may be her night.

I’ll have a moderate each way bet, and wouldn’t put anyone off having a small to moderate bet if they like a flutter. I seen the Commander as an investment, I see Genny Wren as worth risking a few quid each way assuming you can afford to lose it. Might just bring you a nice return for low stakes.

Ok, sorry, I’ll clear the way now for the more important stuff.

  23. Kojo, Steve Clark was Mourinihos assistant at Chelsea the 1st stint he did there. He then went on to Manage West Brom on his own.

  24. I hope there will be fitting memorial for one the greatest ever Celts of all-time.

A man who wouldnt bow to the bigots ,bullies and cheats. Neil Lennon.

  25. thomthetim,

I agree with you about McNamara. How come so many of the support have such a regard for him? I don’t think he is even a very good manager, never mind his lack of real love of our club. There are far better managers out there.

  26. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Please not Jackie Mac, he’s nowhere near ready, at times he looks out of his depth at Tannadice, tactically outmanoeuvred by the St Johnstone manager, and not just in the Cup Final, not that there is any disgrace in that because he is still learning his trade (a rookie).

Maybe some day once he has learned his trade, but if common sense prevails our leaders will see that we cannot afford a rookie manager, that is assuming our main intention is still to make lots of money in Europe.
