Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

Try a Dell Inspiron 15 with an i3 processor.

    Don’t pay more than £450.

  2. Ghana defender John Mensah has been offered to Scottish Celtic as a solution to their growing defensive woes.

Mensah – still only 29 – was released from his contract at Lyon at the end of last term after failing to make a single top-team appearance last season for the Ligue 1 outfit.

A combination of injury and the lack of trust from Lyon’s contributed to his season in the shadows even though he was key for Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Now coach Lennon must weigh up Mensah’s abilities, wages, fitness and reliability ahead of taking the deal beyond first base.

Celtic are in desperate need of a dominant centre-half and on the face fit Mensah – dubbed the “Rock of Gibraltar” – fits the bill.

Prior to last season Mensah spent two seasons on loan at Sunderland and made 34 appearances for the Black Cats.

He hoped to secure a permanent switch, but the deal could not be completed and he then returned to France and endured a miserable season.

Now as a free agent he’s able to negotiate with any club and Celtic have been made aware of his salary level and willingness to play.

The big question mark surrounds his ability to last a season because of injuries – it was an issue during his days at Sunderland and then affected his chances in France last term.

Turkish outfit Tranzonspor and French side Bordeaux have also been linked with the defender who started his senior career in Italy with Chievo before working his way to Rennes and then Lyon in France.

Celtic’s defence was ripped to shreds by Ajax on Saturday in Amsterdam and Lennon is keen to add players before next week’s Champions League qualifying tie with HJK Helsinki.

Daniel Majstorovic left last season and against Ajax Charlie Mulgrew, Thomas Rogne and Victor Wanyama were given a torrid time.

Kelvin Wilson struggled for game-time during the pre-season matches in Germany and Holland and does not appear to be the solution to any defensive issues.

In order for any player to be eligible to face the Finns they must be registered 24 hours before the first leg – either July 31 or August 1.

Does embdy know the when this is scheduled to happen or if it is dependent on another event happening?

Mate just for the record, I didn’t think Foxy was GCT, I actually thought it was the bold SuperSammy of old having a dig, and just for the record regards that twat Foxy, I pay for two season tickets, I also pay full whack for Celtic TV but seldom watch it.

As far as Kano goes, I’d take a wee step back from that if I were Foxy.

Regards Tom’s e-mail and Paul’s response, I have not heard anything from Paul but I am curious as to who I tried to out as GCT becasue Paul is talking absolute drivel there.

I have checked back and Tom is letting his imagination run away with him. Yes I did use the name Gold Coast in a post, so what, I live in Brisbane. The Gold Coast name is mentioned just about every single day of my life and some.

Oh! and Foxy, I’m pretty sure Paul will be able to vouch that I am a double season ticket holder, as I was last year, and the year before, and the year before, and….

Blindlemonchitlin – Craigy Whyte used to be a goodie but is now so far to the baddie end of the spectrum the dials have had to be re calibrated. The problem with him, at the start, when he was a goodie, was that he still looked like a spivvy cissy boy with the worst haircut in history , ever. So it was hard for them to make him look human even when the line was that he would ride in on a big white charger and save der Hun. Now, any story about him has that lipchewing gurning picture, or worse.

Craig Whyte, a cissy boy with a bad haircut?

You, sir, are a miscreant and a boor.

Craig Whyte calmly strolled into the Pit of Despair, armed only with his kind blue eyes, his boyishly wavy hair, and his lucky pound coin.

Using his considerable guile and sciuridaen magnetism he duped the hapless Sir David Murray into selling Scotland’s second biggest institution outside Carstairs. The rest, like Rangers, is history.

Craig Whyte is the greatest hero who has ever lived ever.

As far as I was aware that date applied to the transfer embargo ruling.

I know what your saying mate , regarding one rule for them and one for everyone else .

My point is that I thought any club in administration couldn’t buy players.

  8. StMichaelsBhoy2 on

Beattie is signing for Sevco, not Rangers. They’re not in administration and can sign players until 31st August.

He’ll spend most of his time on the treatment table, so they might not get much for him when they try to sell him on next summer.

  9. CELTIC’S game against Inter Milan this Saturday, July 28 (KO: 1.30pm), will bring back a lot of memories of the famous 1967 European Cup triumph in Lisbon.

And a number of former Celts will be special guests at the game. They will take a bow on the Celtic Park pitch before the game, when there will also be a minute’s applause in tribute to Celtic great Joe McBride, who sadly passed away recently.

At the family’s request, the tribute will take place at the Inter game, which they felt was a more appropriate occasion.

Among the former Celts taking a bow on the Paradise pitch this Saturday will be Billy McNeill, John Clark, Stevie Chalmers, Jim Craig, Bertie Auld and John Fallon, along with George Connelly, Tommy Callaghan, Dixie Deans, Pat McCluskey and Evan Williams. All of them played in Celtic’s two competitive games against Inter Milan, either in 1967 or in 1972.

And the legendary Sean Fallon will also join the men he worked with ahead of the game.

  10. Four Green Fields raises an interesting question.

Sevco ought to be able to sign whomever they want for the Jackie Scarlett Cup or whatever level new entities get to cut their teeth at.

Of course, if you parachute a new entity further up the leagues to try to cash in on its putative support, and the price you exact is an extension of sanctions levelled against a former club, this is already making it up as you go along.

Properly speaking, Sevco are not in administration. Not yet anyway. Therefore, they would be able to sign players but for the pesky SFA embargo that is, itself, under embargo until the window closes. Therefore, if players are lacking enough in perspicacity to throw their lot in with Sevco, there is no impediment as far as I can see. Common sense would tell you to run a mile, but hey-ho.

Craig Beattie may be trying to do a Daniel Cousin, that is, money for nothing. Surely he would rather play football for somebody.

Re. the Aberdeen game. I emailed the ticket office yesterday pointing out to them that the time on the official site for first team matches was still 3.00pm. and surprise, surprise haven’t heard from them yet. But, went on to the ‘tickets’ section of the site and there it was, buy tickets for Aberdeen game ko 12.45!!

They really need to get a grip when dealing with their customers – it would take an office junior less than a minute to change the time of the first team fixtures. It looks really amateurish.

Hope this helps clear any doubts.
