Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

  1. SIMON STAINROD is delighted Dundee are back in Scottish football’s top flight — but DISGUSTED it’s come about due to the It is almost 20 years since then boss Stainrod wore a fedora hat on the sidelines as his newly-promoted Dens Park side beat champions Rangers 4-3.

Now he can’t get his head round the fact Gers are going to be playing their football among the minnows of the Scottish game in the coming season.

Stainrod — now a football agent based in Cannes — said: “I’m absolutely staggered at what’s happened to Rangers.

“It appears to me to be a story of greed, stupidity and lies. It’s horrible.

“For one of the greatest clubs in the world to be in that state of affairs is SCANDALOUS. There’s no other word for it.

“Rangers and Celtic are bigger than most of the clubs in the Premiership.

“If they played in England the two of them and Manchester United would be the three biggest clubs in England.

“The Old Firm are bigger than Arsenal. They’re bigger than Liverpool. They maybe don’t have as many European trophies but they’re bigger football clubs.

“All my experience of Rangers involves playing them on days like the one when we beat them.

“I can remember the thrill I got from that and the way that win made the Dundee fans feel — that kind of euphoria happens because you know you’ve beaten a big club.

“It’s such a shame because Rangers is an institution. I think back to going there on European nights when they’d all the English lads in the side and there was nothing like it.

“The Old Firm games were the same.

“Now they’re going to be going to places like Berwick where there won’t be room for the team and their subs in the dressing room. It’s ridiculous.

“It’s the right thing to demote them, though, because the one element that makes sport work is fairness. If you don’t have that you’re b*****ed.

  2. Rangers ARE one of the biggest clubs in the world….

Rangers ARE bigger than Liverpool, Arsenal etc…

Mr Stainrod you suffer from very poor grammar.

The term is “WERE” for the past tense. You really should know better!

  3. A few of you were very scathing of me for posting Paul’s email, and I accept that. I thought long and hard before going to such lengths, but you know what? . . . I was being crucified on a daily basis, even though I was taking no part in CQN other than as a lurker. For a few weeks I was being accused of posting as Hector Avocado and then, in recent days, Foxy_1888 and Hector Avocado at the same time.

Not one of you who were quick to criticise me yesterday even dared question kitalba while he was character assassinating me, and by definition, the other two posters. The same goes for those who started complaining about “in-fighting” and “petty squabbling” AFTER I posted yesterday. Not even a “are you sure kit?” or even a “I don’t think that’s Tom”. Not one of you who attacked me yesterday had the balls to even ask those simple questions of Kit. That’s fine. There’s no rule that says you have to, yet the second I dare to, after 3 weeks of it, speak up for myself and defend my corner, all I read is, “you shouldn’t have done that” and “stop this silly fighting”. Where were the requests to stop the nastiness when Kit was attacking me on a daily basis? In fact, while Kit was indulging in his sick fantasies, some of you were posting comments like, “Gaun yersel Kit” and “Keep em coming”.

On Saturday, while out on family business, I received a text from a friendly and prominent CQNer advising me that Kit was, at that very moment, engaged in an argument with another poster and had accused him of being me. I spoke to that person last night and I asked him why it had never occurred to him to post a comment to Kit saying something like, “I think you’ve got it wrong there.” After all, this poster KNEW kit was wrong, so surely he could say so. His answer to me was, “I don’t want them ganging up on me.”

Take from that what you will.

As I say . . . I am not proud of using Paul’s email, but those who attacked me for it can go and get stuffed as far as I am concerned. You only spoke up on this after I exercised my right to defend myself following 3 weeks of downright harassment. Too late to start seeking the moral high ground.

As for you Kitalba, I noticed that after I had proved that I was neither of the two posters you were accusing, you seek to defend your actions by posting copies of comments you claim were made by me THREE YEARS AGO.

    The defence rests.

I also see you were moaning to Paul that I had “besmirched you”. Besmirched you? You have been shitting on me from a great height for weeks. I fight back and you get all hurt because I besmirched you. Geeza brek.

    Foxy_1888 –

I don’t agree with some of the more controversial stuff you have posted, but that is beside the point, I am sorry you have fallen victim to the obsessed stalker.

    Hector Avocado –

Apologies to you too. You aren’t the first and I am sure you won’t be the last.

    Kit –

Your stalking games have backfired. I am going to start posting again because . . . I am not going to let you win. Besides, you clearly missed me so much when I was not posting, to the extent that you actually fantasised about me being there all the time. You may abuse me all you want because when all is said and done, I think I have made my point and fought my corner. I will not be reading any of your garbage in future. I suggest you do the same with my garbage. I have received a lot of support and that has made me realise that while nobody will dare speak against you, at least I know that you are not as popular and universally supported as your tiny mind imagines.

    Stalk away. I care not.

I am indebted to The Moon Bhoys for the following . . .

Tom – why dont you continue to post as normal but completely blank any abusive or threatening replies – choosing only to respond to who you deem to be polite and rationale? Its inevitable on an internet blog where everyone is posting anonymously that you will get someone throwing mud at you, what you dont do is join in, you ignore, completely bank, they dont exist.

Thank you TMB. That did it for me. But be careful. You could be next ;-)

I am going in for surgery tomorrow morning (Wednesday) but should be able to lurk using my phone after a day or two.

But I promise to be back fighting fit and posting in time for the new season.

    Kit –

It’s Robina Hospital this time. Just so you know where to send the flowers.

    Till we meet again.

    Hail Hail

  4. Due to distance (I live in engerlund)  I don’t go to many midweek games (none in recent years), for similar reasons an early KO or Sunday game are a real pain and for me, more expensive to get to (an additional taxi fare).

I’m wondering how many Sat.  games I’ll get to see using my ST?

I’m not happy about sacrificing a Sat KO against DU because CFC want to play a glamour game in the US after the season has started, the rearranged DU game is another I cant get to, do the support mean so little? they already have my money so I guess not.

Next season I’ll look at how many Sat 3 pm KOs on offer before considering renewal, paying on the day may be the best option in the future.

I’m not sure if I’d be that fussed if I lived in or around Glasgow but there are plenty like me who don’t.

     whinge over :>)

If you were being serious? Naw thanks!

If we can’t source a Sutton type player then I’d give youth a chance, in any case it’s too late for the qualifiers I’d say.

Another sunny afternoon , typical ozzy winter on west coast.

Any the ozzy brigade order black strip.. Any luck with it coming ?

How has izzy looked in pre season, fitness wise ? I’m sure still big rusty but as long as his fitness levels are high the rest will come back.

Should we try and cover our dodgy defence by playing 2 midfielders in it… Ledley and vic ? More I think about it maybe we should. Still have kayal an ki for the middle. How has that combo worked ??

On the job hunt so gonna take rare moment to enjoy some tunes. Clancy brothers style

Your other stuff is much more interesting and absorbing. You destroy each other and seriously there are no winners here. You are both big enough to take the step back so get on with it.

  13. CELTIC’S Peter Lawwell and SPL supremo Neil Doncaster were in London yesterday trying to persuade Sky to show Scottish football for EIGHT years.

The satellite TV giants had agreed to a five-year deal worth £80million but that was conditional on Old Firm matches being central to the package.

That won’t happen now Rangers are bound for the Third Division and SPL clubs are frantically trying to come up with other packages that would at least provide some kind of stability, albeit with much reduced payments over a longer time frame.

However, even after cutting back on their fees, broadcasters will not commit to covering matches until 2020 unless SPL bosses deliver rights to a number of Rangers’ games in the SFL.

That’s why the SPL themselves were one of the bidders who met yesterday’s deadline for offers to screen SFL games.

Doncaster was in London at the end of last week along with Parkhead chief executive Lawwell and they travelled south again yesterday to continue the talks with Sky.

The broadcasters, including ESPN and other corporate partners, have remained tight lipped since Rangers were barred from the SPL but they are looking to scale down their payments.

All bids for SFL matches had to be in by midday and last night, along with their agents, IMG, league chiefs were assessing the merits of each offer.

There is a threat that the £1.9m annual fee paid to the SFL by the SPL – as part of the settlement agreed when the top clubs broke away in 1998 – won’t be handed over unless the rights to Rangers’ games are given in return.

However, the SFL will not be bullied, believing they can do their own deals with Sky and others. They will also consider legal action to prevent the SPL from reneging on their pact from 1998.

However, there is a clause in this deal which allows for payment to be scaled down if there is a narrowing of the gap in the finances between the SPL and SFL. But it is unlikely Sky, or anyone else, would be willing to pay the SFL much more than £30,000 a game featuring Rangers.

The SFL are expected to announce today they are prepared to bend the rules over any new TV deal they negotiate so that Charles Green’s new-look Rangers will benefit.

Newco Rangers have been granted only associate membership of the SFL. As a result, under Rule 19 of the SFL’s constitution, they aren’t entitled to a share of the sale of those rights – even though it’s their involvement which has produced a bidding war.

The rule states: “An Associate Member shall have no financial interest in the assets of the League and shall not be accorded any voting rights.”

However, SFL chief executive David Longmuir hinted last night a compromise may be reached which will allow the club to gain a much-needed cash injection from the transaction.

He said: “We will work in a collaborative fashion to operate in the best interests of the League.”

Meanwhile, the continued delays over Rangers securing SFA membership have forced Fife-based Junior side Kelty Hearts to postpone a testimonial match against the Ibrox side which was due to take place tonight.

Ally McCoist’s men have only played games behind closed doors at their Murray Park training base so far this summer as they are not licensed to play official fixtures.

  19. Season ticket holders getting refunds? it will never catch on here

Milan have promised refunds to disgruntled fans with season tickets following the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva.

The club made the offer in a statement on Monday after many fans were angered at the departure of the pair, with some even staging a mock funeral outside Milan headquarters.

A lawsuit has been filed arguing that some fans bought season tickets on the assumption that the two players would be at the club.

The club says the offer was made because of “the need for style and love of the club towards its supporters and independent of any legal analysis,” adding that “the lawsuit is without any foundation.”

Other Milan icons, Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso and Filippo Inzaghi, left the club at the end of last season.
