Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

You’re probably right about Tony and any signing blunting his chances.

What’s your opinion on the effectiveness of Celtic’s current forwards.

Hooper was a player I admired at Scunthorpe one worth taking a chance on. But I’m not happy with his lack of development. Perhaps, I’m being unfair but I don’t think he’s added to his game, mentally or skill wise.

Samaras is the nearly man, think it’ll click for him and soon hopefully. He’s frustrating though. Remeber that 1/2 season he had under WGS ? He was told to stay in the box, the only period when this was demanded of him.

    I’d bin the rest.

    Explanation Required Please Celtic

A few days ago I went up to renew my season ticket for myself and junior for the season ahead. I realise that the deadline for renewals was some time back but times are hard and due to a family summer holiday the season tickets would have to wait until late July for payment.

My son is eight and in recent seasons Celtic have offered kids season tickets for £50 which is great value and hugely appreciated by parents like me who are keen to encourage their kids to keep up the Celtic tradition. Part of the reason for the cheap tickets is that the games against Rangers are not included so this gave Celtic the chance to sell them to the public at £42 a go. To get the Rangers games his ticket would cost £129 but Junior is too young yet to be exposed to the niceties of the big derby so he gets to see all the other games and develop his support for all things Celtic.

At the beginning of the summer the £50 tickets where on sale (admittedly before the Sevco demotion to the third division) but when I went to buy the tickets in the ticket office I was informed that the kids’ tickets were now priced at £129.

The guy in the ticket was pleasant enough and was almost apologetic when explaining that because there is no more Rangers that was why the price is now £129 and in anyone’s language an increase of £79 seems ridiculously steep for two games against Dundee.

Celtic are to be congratulated for the kids’ tickets initiative and even at £129 it represents tremendous value for money at £6.50 per game. But it’s galling to know that people who have purchased them earlier (before Sevco’s demise) have them for £50 and yet others have to pay an extra £79 to watch Dundee twice. That can’t be right.

My Father never paid me into a Celtic game at Parkhead until I was 15. In those days boys were given ‘lifts’ which involved being literally thrown over the turnstiles for free. And yet Celtic can’t complain because when their need was great I bought £1240 worth of shares during the Fergus McCann revolution.

The one thing the club won’t get back is goodwill, which for me has now gone in the short term. I was considering buying junior the new strip at a cost of £60 but that won’t now happen. There will be other cut backs on Celtic Views and programmes in the months ahead and that extra £70 will be recouped one way or the other. But as I said goodwill has gone and having witnessed two other guys in the ticket office having the same argument then the club may have a problem. I can’t believe there have not been numerous complaints about this already.

I bought junior’s ticket and it was difficult not to because he was standing next me giving me the ‘wounded dog look’. But what should worry the club is that there are people out there who will not bring their kids to Parkhead next season and they may not return – ever.

Maybe someone at the club could get in touch to explain as to why this increase has been passed on to the kids especially at a time of ‘austerity’ when families in particular as so strapped for cash.

    I know it’s puzzling me.

The Mowbray season was unbelievable and the whole of Scotland, UK and Europe knew there was something stinking rotten in Scotland.

The game is up for them all. And there have been a lot of corrupt pigs feeding at the corrupt trough.

Celtic are in the background blameless and spotless because they are letting the Zombie devour itself.

    Talking of tynecastle

The week before the Broomfield chippys best Customer scored two at Motherwell, I specifically remember Craig Gordon coming up for a corner with a couple of minutes to go to at tynecastle in an attempt to try and get an equaliser for Hearts with Celtic leading 2-1Hearts were playing for nothing that day but their determination knew no bounds with Celtic getting kicked all over the park and Presley getting his marching orders

I am glad that the said Gordon never got the opportunity to wear a Celtic jersey

Celtic’s winner that night was scored by a fan of some other now defunct team.

  11. Kojo,

There is some merit in what you are saying but I think if we stay with a 4-5-1 we can apply measured pressure on this team. They have never played against a team with such a support as Celtic. We have to make it count and that doesn’t mean gung ho football ( a clean sheet should be the most important thing) but it does mean football that gets the support rolling with what the team is doing. Having us playing so negatively would not go down well with the support and would definitely have a negative effect.

  12. gallagher

The technical difficulty of the celebration was very high as there was a cheeky wee twist in there for good measure. The landing was a bit suspect though. :))

  13. Big Cup Winners

Skippys celebrations at the Motherwell game were almost as exuberant as that fan of the now defunct team at Hampden last season

  14. Anybody that doubts Scott McDonald’s ability should remember his goals against:

Manchester United, Spartak, Rangers H&A and Kilmarnock away (late winner midweek match).

    Top drawer.

  15. If everyone is fit, the team for the home game for me would be.

    Forster

    Matthews Wanyama Mulgrew Izaguirre

    Kayal

    Forrest Brown Ki Samaras

    Hooper

Theres probably a doubt for a few of the players and I would be just as happy having Rogne, Commons or Ledley in the starting line up.

We need to retain the ball as much as possible whilst probing away and for this reason I’d have the Ki man in there.

  16. Forster

    Matthews Wanyama Mulgrew Izaguirre

    Brown Kayal Ki Ledley Samaras

    Hooper

Forrest or Commons on after 70 for Hooper, but take Samaras’ place on the left with Samaras going up top on his own.

  17. If their all fit I reckon the team NL will be aiming for will be

    Forster

    Matthews Rogne Mulgrew Izzaguire

    Wanyama Brown Ledley

    Commons Hooper Samaras

with Forrest Stokes Wilson as the main back ups

Ki’s unavailable cause of the olympics I think

Reckon we can get get past Helsinki but we’ve got a league game then a long journey before the next round so we’ll need to see how things are after that.

Just looking forward to the game tonight pre-season, but won’t it be good just to go see a game!

Looking back at that team prediction ,Kayal was an injury doubt at the moment , hope he makes it , then I’d have to change my prediction but still confident we’ll make it through this round :-)

Kayal is essential as he is one of our most experienced players at this level.

It will be a bit tougher if he is not out there but I would still expect Celtic to go through this next round with a couple of goals to spare, even if he doesn’t make it.

It is really important we have him ready for the final qualifier (assuming we take care of HJK) and I would not take him to the US at all if he has the slightest of injury concerns.

Apart from Fraser in goal, he is the one player we really need in the team for the final qualifying games, IMO.
