Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

We should have identified the guys we wanted to move on at the end of last season, get their agents in,create a market and sell them.Wilson,Rasmussen etc.We then could have got guys in before pre-season IMO.

    Brilliant, especially

Yet, in his book, he praises to the highest degree another Journalist, namely the late John Rafferty– who wrote, taught, and at one point helped train arguably Glasgow and Scotland’s greatest ever boxer— Jackie Patterson.

Good to see him recognised on cqn by someone other than myself.

Interesting post from earlier re Hugh McIlvaney and the Big Man. Celtic supporters will go out of their way to go to pre-season friendlies, and have to pay to see them. Do not expect to win them all, but expect the team to be well prepared before taking on the likes of Ajax. Or even the Stuttgart Kickers come to that. Get fit first, play shorter indoor matches, (Falkirk have always been helpful in that regard) and then play a few games with only one, the last one, against opposition capable of winning.

Dunno if the MSM are looking into said Banker– howver the whole HBOS/BOS life of the 90’s will surely come under scrutiny soon enough with the major players named and examined with the benefit of dare I say it hindsight and– honesty, transparancy and clarity?– ok maybe the last part was tongue in cheek.

I was brought up to believe that Rafferty was a Demi God in journalistic terms.

Some time ago I wrote about the passing of the late John Quinn of the evening times, whose death prompted a post on the Celtic FC website such was John’s standing with the club.

To me, John was “Uncle John” and he and my dad would sit together at various amateur and professional boxing nights– with my ould man posing as a journo– and on occasion writing some copy for some journo pals.

However, both spoke of Rafferty in glowing terms.

Re Benny Lynch– The late John Burrowes- another great Glasgow journalist- describes the scene when Jackie Paterson won the world Flyweight title from Peter Kane at Hampden Park in the first round.

He says that as mayhem broke out at the end of the fight, a small dishevelled and down at heel man wearing a bunnet, and who was clearly not in the best of health, ran into the ring and lifted Paterson aloft before being swallowed by the crowd and heading off into the night.

Paterson would later describe that this was his abiding memory of Benny Lynch!

identifying the players you want to leave is the easy bit,the hard bit is getting somebody to take them off you .rassmussan has been up for sale for 2 year and kelvin Wilson isn’t going to be on the top of any managers wish list, think we’ve done well trimming the sqaud m.wilson ,Cha ,dan ,lovvens,Juarez ,mc ginn ect prob about 60 k a week in wages there hopefully murphy,Wilson ,and ki will go to free up wages

A Lynch/Paterson examination and comparison would be an interesting one for another night. Paterson should have changed weight, but was as heavy a pound for pound hitter as ever there was.

Lynch was craftier– greater ring skills in outsmarting his foe.

And Rinty Monaghan just sang at the end of each fight win, lose or draw.

I ,however, am off for a pint up the hill!

    Cheers

We only need as the stats show a player who can convert 1 of the 4 shots on goal that our forwards on average get every game( with playing 3 up front ).

    If only, please

Brechin voted No to Div 1.

They were poorly misrepresented in the MSM (quelle surprise). What they had said was that a number of cast iron guarantees were required and then they would vote Yes. The cast iron guarantees they sought were of the type that simply could not be given.
