Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

I well understand where you’re coming from particularly the shenanigans of the football authorities doing all they can to keep the zombie club going, if not alive.

Disagree on the purchase of players. Lennybhoy and myself had a chat about this on Saturday. Real quality players won’t come here period. A step down might come here provided CL football is on offer which isn’t the case so far.

    Anyway take care amigo.

    Top Corner

I recognise those words as a post of my own from some time back I think.

I don’t think that Masterton will be one of those charged, but he was undoubtedly the grandaddy of what became known as the “handshake” banking ethos of the corporate arm of BOS and then HBOS.

He retired in 2001, and in the annual accounts he was described as “Britain’s most CREATIVE banker”.

His successor, pupil, and protege- Peter Cummings– was eventually the recipient of the biggest ever single fine handed out by the FSA for improper banking conduct. The fine was one of SEVEN figures- which apparently Cummings is appealing- though one has to ask what kind of improper conduct you can be involved in that results in a personal, not corporate, fine of Millions of pounds?

If you go through Ian Fraser’s articles, you will see a trend that does go all the way back to Masterton. In particular, you will see that Masterton set up the Stadia group– to solely develop Football Stadia linked to ancilliary offices etc— which eventually went bust and had to be rescued by way of the HBOS rescue route which coincidentally forced Livingstone FC into Admin for the first time.

This process was roundly condemned as an HBOS fix designed to protect Masterton by Dominic Keane and others.

Masterton remains one of the longest serving directors in Scottish Football, being on the board of Dunfermiline FC– which was in debt to the bank for far more than Livingstone FC ever was.

However, the bank debt has been repaid by way of a restructuring with Dunfermiline no longer being the owners of their ground. Instead the ground and ancilliary offices were transferred to a private company, owned by Masterton, and financed by way of a soft loan from….. HBOS!

In turn, Masteron granted similar soft loans to Dunfermiline FC.

Gavin Masterton was known as David Murray’s “man in the bank” until his retiral in 2001 and at that time Peter Cummings took his place.

There is idle speculation that Murray may have been given access to financial information concerning other clubs dealings with the bank somehow — but that is unsubstantiated and mere speculation.

U20 league is to be a ‘stadium league’ so barrowfield is (rightly) not suitable. guess they want to raise the profile a bit.

if the deal with partick means we can’t move any of the games, then perhaps the odd monday night at the Park could host a few of these Development Squad games against english reserve team opposition? we have played a ton of those matches over the last few years, so a few ad hoc ones could be fitted in around the U20 league games i am sure? I really think it would work, and be good PR for the club.

    The retraction was from Stenhousemuir

Add Hamilton and I think you’re correct re Brechin ….although I was thinking East Stirling for some reason

If Wilson is out the door that can only be good news. Not good enough for Celtic.

  8. Just checked back on the local paper site for Dumbarton. They voted for newco to enter into the Third Division. I believe this was a change from their previous promulgated stance.

dont think its anything to do with redevelopment work that site will be sold once the housing market picks up as we already have lennox town and only 50% of that has been developed thusfar.

would not be unhappy to see Kelvin Wilson moving on, although i did say it sometimes takes players a while to settle before you see the best in them. i dont think celtic would be actively miving him on without another centreback coming in

My understanding from someone I trust and respect is that Peter Cummings has no formal banking qualifications whatsoever. How he was allowed to behave in the matter he did is of itself criminal.

And yet he thinks he’s a good guy helping out at his local church in Dumbarton as if he did no wrong.

The information I received tonight is that Kelvin Wilson will move on and we will bring in not one but two CHs. Whether this occurs in time for Helsinki game, remains to be seen.

    ElDiegoBhoy on 23 July, 2012 at 21:26:

The CL is the carrot, if we do manage to get there I hear we are looking to bring in two quality players, most probably on loan. Backs up what we discussed that any really quality players will not come to the SPL for a sustained contract period.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  23. Didn’t attend any pre-season game but the results fill me with gloom. We’re told we learn from these games. But there was nothing we didn’t already know. Loovens is and always has been rotten, Wilson is a poor defenders even by SPL standards and Bangura hasn’t got it. The Scandinavians – bought I suspect on Johann’s say-so – are a pretty uninspiring bunch. Certainly we do have some decent players but not any who can win a game single-handed.

Footnote. Some are demanding a 30 goals a season striker. That’s unrealistic. Such a man would cost in excess of £6 m – and then there’s the wages. Better by far a £2-3 m centre half.
