Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

raymilland-I think the pricing of last season’s EL games was too high ,considering the KO times and after going through after Sion were rightly kicked out, money we hadn’t banked on.

I did say it was not Celtic’s fault; meaning we did not bust the huns. This is a difficult one for Celtic as if they had offered an inbetween price, then that would not have been fair for those that had already paid in for the opt-in price of £129.

Having 3 young kids, the £50 tickets were a dream, as I said I have 2 tickets this season.

If this is carried through to next season, then this will not only impact anybody with kids, but also The Kano Foundation who have 40ish kids tickets.

Hopefully, Celtic will review this policy in time for next season

  8. While I agree that the loss of the £50 kids ticket is a shame, logic dictates that, since the club cannot sell those seats for a lot of money as was formerly the case (as these were opt-out seats) they have to recoup the money somehow in order that SydneyTim can get his centre-back.

Those of us who support Celtic have to try to maximise the club’s income.

  10. Not sure what,” We are all on the same side,” means. We all have to fund the club. We also, all have to express solidarity and, if possible, help others who struggle to pay ticket prices. Im sorry you found my comment flippant. It was meant to be. I didnt realise I had to ask permission.

  14. Re keeping kids on board as fans (from earlier posts).

    I have a proposal:

we have apparently signed up to play the new U20s league, using the Stade de Partick as our home ground. Why not look at the SPL fixtures, and where we have an away weekend SPL game, (and no euro tie) schedule (some of) the U20 league games for the Monday night after this weekend, and play them at Celtic Park. So.. first team are away, no european football that week, people would love to go along to the Park for 90 mins reserve/U20 action. especially if… kids went free with an accompanying parent. Megastore could be open, a quota of 4 or 5 first team wandering about signing autographs, mascot there to have photos taken etc. It would allow the Club to interact wth young fans, be a safe (and cheap) environment for parents to allow young kids to experience Celtic park, and the Club would benefit from food/drink sales, merchandise sales, and of course, a noisy 3 or 4000 (hopefully) at some of their U20 games. Leicester rugby team do this, they get about 1500-2000 fans and their average first team gate is about 18000. (they do allow beer sales though…)

On a serious note……do you have to prove the weans age to the ticket office? In the old days I had two wean’s seats in 118 and I’m sure I had to send something to them. A distant memory since they are now old enough to buy me drinks in the pub :)

BTW noticed the minihun game is on a Wednesday night in Edinburgh, always a Roseburn bar opportunity!

  17. BRTH,

I still read Hugh Mc.Illvanney in the Sunday Times and he hasn’t lost his muse.

I think that there are two sides to the “whipping boys” theory and I wonder if Jock was in the game today, would he be such a big advocate for it.

The Hungarians of the Puskas era used to adopt that philosophy also.

The upside is as you state, confidence, rhythm etc.

however, there is also the tendency to lean towards complacency.

I suppose a combination of fodder and testing games would be the way to go ; and if you think about it, that was the way this pre season was mapped.

Another point to consider, was that close seasons were longer then, therefore the players had more time to build up their fitness before they even saw a ball.

My point being – then was then and now is now, and I believe Big Jock would have adapted appropriately to the modern conditions.

Excellent post, and I am of course loathe to be on a different side to Jock, but there is of course another view. That is, that it doesn’t matter a bit. Of course, if we lost 10-0 to Ajax, it may matter, but my point is that it all comes down to the first competitive game. We could play Real Madrid and lose, we could play Diddy FC and win by loads… so what do we learn? Arguably you would learn more from defeats about your weaknesses. Maybe I’m being too blase about it, but I am trying to see a wider picture. The biggest part of pre-season is on the training grounds and we don’t get to see any of that – so we trust in NL and the players or we don’t.

    Still need a centre-back mind.

SUN … NEIL LENNON wants Rangers stripped of the titles they won

The Celtic boss last night backed plans by football chiefs to enforce historical punishments if Gers are found guilty of using dual contracts to pay players.

Rangers are facing up to losing NINE trophies won between 2002-2011 — five SPL titles and four Scottish Cups.

Lennon said: “I’ll see what the commission finds and if Rangers are found to have broken the rules they should be stripped of their titles.

“It will not change what has gone on in the past, but I suppose there will be a sort of moral victory in that respect.

“It is not going to change my life now, by any stretch of the imagination, but it would be good to be changed for historical reference.”

The news Rangers face the humiliating prospect of handing back trophies is the latest blow for the club which was liquidated in June.

It would result in them losing the tag of the world’s most successful league champions.

Their title trophy haul would be reduced from 54 to 49, seeing Northern Irish club Linfield out in front on 50 and Celtic would move on to 48.

Hoops boss Lennon added: “I wouldn’t want the medals, just the recognition. That would be enough.”

It’s believed the measures were put together by members of the SFA, SPL, SFL and representatives from Charles Green’s Sevco.

While Celtic are preparing for Champions League duty, Rangers are fighting to be ready for their new life on the bottom rung of Scottish football.

Sevco are still waiting to hear if the new club have been granted SFA membership ahead of their entry into the Third Division.

They are also being told to accept the one-year transfer embargo imposed by the SFA that they had the Court of Session overturn — as well as the newco being ordered to pay Rangers’ old football debts to clubs in Scotland and Europe.

My thoughts exactly. Remember having the exact same conversation with ma auld man 3 or 4 pre-seasons ago and we both agreed. These games should be about geting the team moving, building confidence, getting yer stikers scoring etc… Unfortunately it is where we are at the moment. We obviously need the money generated from these types of games.
