Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

  1. Confused.

Why on earth would SPL, cash strapped as it is, bid for SFL TV rights?

Is there any truth that the front facade of iPox has the red bricks From a demolished toilet block in Glasgow? I’m sure I heard this when I was a youth. I’m now retired. This is, apparently the reason it’s a pis.. Sorry listed building.

    Any researchers out there?

    its an urban myth bud.

Its just built form the same type of bricks that were being used all over scotland at that time.

But it is still a toilet block.

daft wee point from me. See all the RANGERS iron work & tiles around the building, the letter G is poorly formed, allways looks out of scale,

    Re Kids ST now £129

You say its not Celtic’s fault that they raised the Kids ST due to the loss of the two home games against r@ngers and somebody has to pay for their funeral. A pauper’s grave is good enough for them, why should we pay for their burial?

Celtic set the prices for ST. If that they are willing to gamble on potential loss of future growth of fan base; it could be our own funeral we are paying for. Steveboy, from your flippant post, I take it that you have not yet reached parenthood, how many kids ST have you purchased?

Who introduced us to Celtic; and at what age? I think its safe to say, our old man passed on the torch. The importance of generation upon generation of Celtic fans cannot be underestimated. Times do change, as has become apparent across the city.

To stay ahead of the game, families of ordinary working class backgrounds should not be burdened with finding large sums of cash to maintain the Celtic family, subsidy of family tickets is vital for the long term view.

yes but UEFA will determine dates dependant upon who gets through all of the ties

and I think on the £50 kids tickets, there are only so many for sale once they are sold out you get one that includes all the games at the higher price

  20. raymilland

    I agree with your call.

I remember getting lifted over regularly to get into the games. As I was almost 6 feet at age 14, they started to object.

Surely, there can be some compromise on this hike when we are not a stadium that sells out. Kids are more likely to have money spent on them at the kiosks too.

Was this idea road tested with fans at all?

    Good Evening.

Modern technology can be a real pain, especially when you want to reboot something, or reconfigure it or basically reinstall what you have become used to for some time. With computers and their ancilliaries, such an exercise often means going back to the start which as often as not means searching for the bloody disc that helped you out with the initial instalation.

It was this scenario which, last night, brought about a complete clear out of the family computer desk in search of that all illusive instalation disk which everyone in the household was looking for. The disc, like all complete mysetries, was never to be found, but the search process resulted in various pieces of junk and out of date materials being confined to La Poubelle!

This exercise in domestic cleanliness was, however, unexpectedly halted when I came across a couple of books which my sons had clearly taken from elsewhere, and for some reason had seen fit to leave around the computer desk for no apparent obvious reason.

One such tomb was an old friend which no doubt many of you have somewhere in your own houses. It is entitled simply- McIlvanney on Football.

For those who may not be familiar with the journalistic prose of Hugh McIlvanney can I urge you to go and purchase a copy of this book forthwith. Further, if you can get a copy of the similarly entitled ” McIlvanney on Boxing” or ” McIlvanney on Horseracing” then do not hesitate to buy these immediately and without a second thought.

Hugh McIlvanney is the only sports writer to have ever been voted Journalist of the year, and was given a lifetime achievement award at the 2004 Scottish Press Awards. He was also voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame without ever throwing a punch, but was clearly recognised for his ability to describe various men throwing thousands of punches over a period of decades.

In short, when it comes to McIlvanney, the press corps that we have today are basically not fit to be a smudged full stop at the bottom of his page.

Yet, in his book, he praises to the highest degree another Journalist, namely the late John Rafferty– who wrote, taught, and at one point helped train arguably Glasgow and Scotland’s greatest ever boxer— Jackie Patterson.

However, it was on picking up McIlvanney on Football that I was reminded of an absolute, a truism, a sheer undeniable fact ( at least in the eyes of the Kilmarnock born McIlvanney ) that can sometimes be overlooked, and the significance of which can sometimes get lost in its sheer simplicity.

The revelation concerned comes with the title of the very first chapter that the man writes on football. It is simply entitled— The Big Man- and other greats!

Oh, there are plenty of greats in there too– Bobby Moore, Pele, Best, Cruyff, Ferguson, Clough, Puskas and so on, but the title tells you all you need to know about what McIlvanney sees as the pecking order. His chapter tells of the Big Man– and then the other greats!

Yes, the “others” are greats– but along side The Big Man– they are but– well— others!

This description is in no way meant to belittle the achievements or the abilities of those others, but the use of the word “others” places all of these greats in one camp or collection, and the Big Man as someone outside that collective term.

In his time, and at his zenith, McIlvanney wrote for The Dailly Express, The Scotsman, The Observer and The Sunday Times. His was not, in the main, a Scottish readership, yet his opening salvo on football makes reference to The Big Man as the standard by which all other so called “greats” will be judged or compared— when in fact it may well have been more popular south of the border to highlight some of the others who are mentioned later on in the chapter.

However the book is called McIlvanney on Football— not McIlvanney on popularity.

As I thumbed the familiar pages of this book, that Big Man came to mind. In particular something that he used to say about pre season came to mind and struck home like shaft of light.

In his day, as often as not, Celtic would go on a pre season tour of Ireland. It was said that this gave the Irish based support a chance to see the great Glasgow Celtic at close quarters and it was a duty fulfilled by the club, recognising the support that came from Ireland.

Whike that may have been so, The Big Man used the games concerned for an altogether different purpose. With no disrespect to Sligo Rovers, Bohemians, or any other league of Ireland team, The Big Man used these games to get his team used to dominating a game with the football, scoring cricket like scores with the forwards becoming refamiliarised with the running of their team mates and honing the ability to find the goal….. time after time after time.

Get the forwards used to scoring by the barrel load, he would say, get their confidence up, where they believed that they could score at every opportunity and with every chance.Get them used to creating chances and scoring repeatedly.

The best way to defend was to attack, and he often repeated the mantra that his team were not to be concerned about who the opposition were, or what the opposition would or could do– if they didn’t have the ball, then they couldn’t do much!!!

Ajax of Amsterdam have scored plenty of goals in their pre season- 4 against us!

I wonder if the pre season policy at Celtic Park is the wisest of policies?

Yes there are glamour ties with Madrid etc in the USA and there are ties at home against Norwich and Inter Milan which will represent a stiff test– albeit a friendly one. Maybe some of these are lucrative in the financial sense.

However, I cannot but help thinking back to the big man’s thinking. If you have a team with a degree of quality, then get them up to speed, fill them with confidence, get them familiar with their own moves and strengths, and let them start out any campaign with sheer and utter belief that against anyone they can bag goals aplenty. As the opposition improves in quality, yes, the goal chances will lessen in number, but if you have been trained to take & create as many goal chances as possible, then the opposition has to work helish hard to prevent you from converting the chances created– and while they are busy preventing you from scoring, they are no threat to your own goal!

Further, if you take to the field believing that you can score and will score, then it will show and your opponent will sense it, know it, and adjust their play to try and prevent it. In this way- you dictate the game and how it will go!

Last year we saw a Celtic team that stuttered its way into Europe, although eventually that stuttering team produced some excellent and much improved performances against teams that went far in European competition.. This year they embark on Europe as Champions, and hopefully they will hit their stride and play with the confidence of champions quickly. The trick is to gain that confidence and self belief quicker than last year, and take to the field with that confidence as the twelth man.

To that end I wonder about what the club should be doing pre season and whether or not a lesson can be learned from the book that had fallen down the back of the computer desk.

The Big Man ( singular ) and other..greats (plural)… the chapter was called that for a reason. Sometimes his methods are worth revisiting and reinstalling– just like rebooting a computer– you go back to the basic tools that made it work before with optimum results!
