Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

Lennybhoy – I hope Kelvin Wilson goes on to great things.

If he leaves us, I’ll always think of him in the same bracket as other what-if players like Evander Sno, Massimo Donati, Adam Virgo, Landry N’Guemo, and the incomparable Zheng Zhi. (thumbsup)

Performed better for us than any forward at the club today.

    Re: Lennoxtown

Celtic bought a 46 acre site at Lennoxtown some years ago, developed half of it to create a training complex and it was officially opened amid much fanfare, and quite rightly so, in 2007. Will always remember one red top at the time saying that it was a cheaper and smaller version of Murray Park! Could’nt quite bring themselves round to applauding the club for investing £7m, and failing to mention that this was only phase 1 of the operation.

So far so good, but what has happened since then? Not a lot it would seem. Phase 2, the buiding of the Youth Academy, has been talked about for the last 5 years. Nothing has happened yet. I am fully aware of the fact that we are operating in a very difficult and uncertain economic climate, but I would have hoped that something concrete(!) would have been put in place by now.

Celtic are fortunate to have a state of the art training complex in an idylic setting, and I am sure, and hope, that it will be developed further in the very near future.

  11. This is my theory

Fat boy is setting himself up for an exit this week saying he won’t accept talk of stripping titles play the martyr painting green as the villian for accepting these terms, sending the fans in2 meltdown and forcing sevco in2 admin he,ll sell up to Kennedy and get out of there with some sort of small profit ,Sally will re enter the hero and it will all be somebody else’s fault again ,Kennedy coming out with this bid this week is no coincidence this is the most important week in sevcos short history it’s been put out there to cause maximum confusion between the orcs green or Kennedy season book or no season book .

  12. I’ve just had a wee look at HJK and their recent schedule.

    http://uk.soccerway.com/teams/finland/helsingin-jalkapallokubi/

It looks like they were afforded a 10 day preparation period for their last CL qualifier.

Their current opponents, KR Reykjavík, have had a busier schedule and who knows if they were fatigued or were not prepared properly because the scoreline was emphatic.

    http://uk.soccerway.com/teams/iceland/knattspyrnufelagid-reykjavik/

Unlike most other people, I don’t think we should worry too much about losing in the Amsterdam arena by that scoreline. It will mean they will not be in anyway complacent when the Big Show starts. I would not belittle Ajax at home because they are a very good team there, I never seen the game so I can’t comment on how Celtic played but there is every likelihood the players were not conditioned for the game because they are in the middle of pre-season training so we don’t know what work they have been doing.

The one thing that does concern me is we are flying over to the US again prior to the most important CL qualifier, I feel we will take care of Helsinki despite the concern people have about that game. Real Madrid are an exceptional team and they will have us chasing the ball like nothing on earth and with the travel there and back we could lose a couple of key players. Germany would be as far as I’d go pre-season whilst we have these precarious qualifiers.

  13. Canamalar,

cheers pal,not quite what i was looking for,

but i will give it due consideration ;-)))

  14. philvisreturns on

petec – Thanks for the memory, pal. :)

Skippy was a decent forward but I think he thought he was more important the longer he was at Celtic.

Who cares? I don’t want out players to be shrinking violets. I want them to unleash their id and skelp our opponents.

I was going to say “skelp the huns” there, but that phrase is about to become as dated as Haircut 100 singles, ZX Spectrums and Walkmans.

    Humility is overrated. (thumbsup)

A lot more honest than the MIB ……….. Some of them must be in ‘oh, shit, what did we do’ mode, these days……… They favoured the arrogant Club who have shamelessly shafted Scottish Football, and now themselves …. What goes around, comes around ……

Probably some truth in your analysis of Scott McDonald. But his last few months under Mowbray were awful for him and us.

The guy was a Hoops fan too, something that he always mentions. Personally, I think he’d bring some passion and desire to our forward line.

Probably get shot down here, but the current group fail to turn up, too often for me.

skippy was my kind of player, in your face.

I shouted at him “get up fatty”, when he was bursting his heart out for us defending, luckily for me it was during one of those eerie silences we have.

anyroadup, a few minutes later he’s only went and scored, lifted his jersey and slapped his six pack, never made me happier than that day, attitude was tops, I read it as **** you ya fud am here on merit, thats what I want on my team :o)

i have a book by Kevin McCarra called Scottish Football a pictorial history, it mentions John Rafferty when discussing Big Jock’s team…

“John Rafferty in his book 100years of Scottish Football called the Celtic side of that period ‘the greatest club team of the whole century’ and that tribute seems no more than their due”

and i see John is mentioned as being a contributor to We’ll Support You Ever More : The Impertinent Saga of Scottish Fitba alongside Ian Archer, Hugh Taylor and John Mackenzie

  23. btw

i watched Falkirk 3 Middlesborough 6 on Alba last night

Skippy did score but he also missed an open goal

On holiday I saw a sevco fan wearing a t shirt with the initials WATP above the badge.

Mrs hamstring asked what it meant and I could not resist replying ” what a total pr@ck”.
