News doesn’t pay anymore

801

At the start of the week our man in Poland sent me a link to the Croatian outlet who interviewed Nikica Jelavic.  I mentioned the player in an article yesterday and recalled his earlier comments, which I referenced as background information.    This ‘news’ was subsequently carried by today’s radio and print outlets in Scotland.

It’s maybe a low blow to bring out the ‘Lazy journalism’ point on the day Scotland’s formerly-largest newspaper shed journalists, although the point is perfectly illustrated, but lazy journalism always found its place in the past.  The real problem has little to do with the standard of journalism on offer, it’s about business models in the old media.  News doesn’t pay unless you can tax consumers or bundle it with paid-for football channels, which is not a good thing.

    Andy Goram in Friday’s SUN . . .

ALLY McCOIST is at breaking point — a man at the end of his tether.

Each day he asks the same question, and each day he gets the same sorry answer. “Sorry, Ally, there’s no money to spend on new players.”

What a despicable way to treat a Rangers legend. What a despicable way to treat the fans.

In my day, after we’d suffered one or two embarrassing results, the chairman would pull something out of the hat, usually a big name signing.

These days? Well, from what I can see McCoist’s words of comfort and wisdom are about the only positive things coming out of Ibrox.

No matter how much he’s hurting, no matter how bad he feels, he always seems to find the right words at the right time.

It’s a gift he’s always had, knowing just what to say and when.

That’s of little comfort or concern to the Gers fans who’ve seen their heroes fall behind Celtic.

Listen, take nothing away from the Hoops and Neil Lennon. They deserve enormous credit for the way they’ve clawed themselves right back into the reckoning.

Yet I can’t help but thinking they’ve been assisted by the ongoing shambles at my old club.

Just what the hell is going on at Rangers?

If anything, the picture has become cloudier when the fans thought it would become clearer.

Yet what is plain to see is that McCoist needs HELP.

If he doesn’t get it and players like Nikica Jelavic and Steven Davis are sold as expected, then Gers can kiss their hopes of four in a row goodbye.

Aside from scoring goals for his beloved Rangers, managing them is the next best thing for Ally. It’s his dream job.

That’s why he will NEVER quit but rest assured, right now he is banging his head against a brick wall. Good people like John Brown and Ian Durrant are out there scouting players.

Every time they report back they’re told to forget it — there’s not two pence to rub together.

McCoist got off to a dream start but it’s all too apparent now that he’s been working with his hands tied since day one.

I can’t believe Kris Boyd and Nacho Novo haven’t been snapped back up. Boydy is a proven goalscorer, born to score goals for Gers.

The same applies to Nacho. You’re not telling me there are players already there better equipped than the little Spaniard?

He’s exactly what Gers need right now.

These are troubled times for Rangers and their supporters.

I have nothing but sympathy for Ally.

Celtic have much more strength in depth and unless McCoist’s prayers are somehow answered in the next few weeks it’s hard to see how Rangers will stop them charging on to the SPL title.

If Rangers lose key players this month then it could all be over before the first signs of spring.

It’s time for Craig Whyte to act.

  8. Exiled Tim

Agreed. They paid £10 million for GJ – actual price was £17m as Portsmouth owed L/Pool £7m for Crouch.

If we weren’t in this piss poor league we would get a fair price but all we seem to get is derogatory bids. Although i would not sell Adam either.

Aiden was our best cash cow ever but it took Russian oil money to bank it.

I agree that he has a huge value , on current form alone not counting his vast potential……. that said King Kenny doesn’t seem to be afraid of spending and given young Adams performance last week while KK was in attendance, I’m not surprised there are rumours.

It is however an area we are well covered for, especially with Lustig having joined, I hope that doesn’t open the door…… I love the thought of Matthews / Izaguirre as our full backs, pacy and capable of great delivery ( both young improving players too)

Goram, who rankers fans know is privy to what’s going on, has let the cat well and truely out of the bag. If his motivation for this article was to force Whyte’s hand then he shouldn’t have bothered. There is no money. I’m astounded of forehead that The Sun published the story.

I would keep Adam as well, but getting Lustig in for nada, PL may well have other ideas, tis the nature of the beast.

Much as I hate to say it we are a selling club now, and will be untill such times we are playing in a euro super league, so guys like Adam, Izzy, Victor, Beram are commidities that we will sell on, mores the pity.

Our day will come again,I won’t be around to see it, but I have left kids who will, and I will be watching from above, that will do for me, I have lived through a few good times.

Assembly meeting with Chairman Craig Whyte

    MEETING WITH CRAIG WHYTE

    – No scope for negotiating a settlement with HMRC due to the criticism they have had from MPs and the Media about some high-profile “deals”. That means the case could take even more time to resolve as any outcome is likely to be appealed by either party.

    – If the decision is adverse and the Club appeal, HMRC can still seek to enforce the decision – not clear if they would but they can start to pursue payment of the tax liability.

    – He hopes “Rangers Football Club Plc” could survive any administration event but feels it would not be the end of the world if it didn’t – I think he said that at our last meeting.

    – There are no concerns about current cash flow and the day to day running of the Club although he acknowledges that the running costs must be reduced – again that was said at our last meeting.

    – There will be comings and goings in the January transfer window – however, players need to go to ensure any new arrivals don’t increase the number of players and the salary costs and it is unlikely that all income will be used to buy new players. He emphasised we need creative players and strikers. There is a list of targets but no names were mentioned.

    – He is really pleased with the backing from the fans and will continue to robustly defend the fans when necessary.

The AGM will probably take place in March 2012 – the accounts are as yet unaudited – the delay is due to awaiting legal opinion on the tax case! He hopes by then to be able to give shareholders more information and be better placed to answer the questions that will inevitably be asked.

He will remain accessible to us and he offered an “open-door” to raise any key issues.

The article smacks of the sort of thing the LL regularly printed from the likes of Charlie Nicholas, putting the boot into Celtic.

I get the feeling that so long as Rangers were on top of us, papers like The Sun were happy to toe the party line, but now that results on the park are dipping, the knives would appear to be coming out, newly sharpened too.

  23. Doesn’t Goram realise that it was the flagrant overspending that went on in ‘his day’ that has left his beloved Rearrangers deep in the fix they’re in now. No point in bleating about now is there.

  24. Anyways, time for the bed thing, was up at 5 this morn, made a few bob completing a few orders for the best dog collars that you will get on the planet, and have a few to make tomorrow, if any of you dog owners want a quality collar for your dog, you know where to get it.

On the items about the tax case, I must applaud him on his command of the facts.
