News doesn’t pay anymore

801

At the start of the week our man in Poland sent me a link to the Croatian outlet who interviewed Nikica Jelavic.  I mentioned the player in an article yesterday and recalled his earlier comments, which I referenced as background information.    This ‘news’ was subsequently carried by today’s radio and print outlets in Scotland.

It’s maybe a low blow to bring out the ‘Lazy journalism’ point on the day Scotland’s formerly-largest newspaper shed journalists, although the point is perfectly illustrated, but lazy journalism always found its place in the past.  The real problem has little to do with the standard of journalism on offer, it’s about business models in the old media.  News doesn’t pay unless you can tax consumers or bundle it with paid-for football channels, which is not a good thing.

As I have said I don’t think their turnover would decrease, I think it would do the opposite.

We are not talking much here, 200-250k per visit, that could easily be clawed back by increased crowds seeing their team in with a chance.

I have many friends who support Aberdeen, or did, they will not go back as long as the hun are getting preferential treatment, and im sure there are supporters of other clubs who feel the same.

All I ask for is a level playing field, don’t think that’s too much to ask for.

  2. The “establishment” mind-set is that the SPL without some version of rangers is un-thinkable and will not happen.

All stops will be pulled out to make sure they will still be a top-flight team.

We will have to fight hard to make sure justice is done.

  6. I think the RTC is sopt on in that the money owed by Them is not the most pressig matter or amount in istelf. The biggest concern will be that if they are seen to let TFOD away with a deal there will be a whole host of other companies inside and outside of football charging in behind them.

Media House with the backing of a pliant LL have played a blinder, they are clearly trying to keep the plates spinnig until May. Pre-pack and then pressure SPL to accept entry with minimum points penalty. I agree starting afresh is the correct procedure but would be gobsmacked if this happens.

Regarding the price, I find it funny that the scottish hun manages to equate €500,000 as £500,000!

The currency converstion would actually make the offer more around the £413,000 mark.

  8. Hey all, Happy New Year. Been offline for a few days.

I was just looking over Phil Mac’s site and I see the ‘wee’ tax bill has been paid.

I also see the myth that the big tax bill could be settled out of court has been blown out of the water by rangers new ‘owner’. So it’s all or nothing, win or bust.

But bust ‘isn’t the worst thing in the world’ – in other words they think they can get away with it relatively unscathed.

The biggest off field battle this season is going to be making sure that an insolvency event for them IS the worst thing in the world and that they are punished accordingly for the two decades of fiscal doping that that they undertook.

It will also be incredible if any decent player who is capable of earning a decent wage in football decides to sign for rangers in January in light of this statement from Craig Whyte. What kind of agent would encourage or advise a move to a club facing insolvency?

And finally – could someone explain again what rangers did regarding Season Book money? Am I right in thinking they effectively borrowed money against future ticket sales in order to provide some working capital for this season?

and can anyone point me in the direction of how much they spent on Bedoya, Goian, Ortiz, Mackay, Wallace etc in the summer? Did they outspend us again this season?

  9. Alex McLeish has confirmed his interest in Celtic midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng but says finance is likely to prevent him making a bid to take him to Aston Villa.

The Korean moved to Glasgow in 2010 and has established himself as a key figure in Neil Lennon’s team, attracting interest from the English Premier League club.

Despite his willingness to take Ki south, McLeish admitted Villa were unlikely to be able to bring in a player on a permanent basis.

The Villa boss said he would instead be turning his attentions to the possible loan captures of Robbie Keane and young Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran.

McLeish said of his interest in Ki: “Am I interested in Sung-Yueng? I think that one would be not happening because we can’t add to the wage bill.”

Ki, 22, arrived at Celtic from Seoul in January 2010 and has made 71 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals.

RogueLeader – I typed a long bleeding message about postadmin huns but it disappeared when I tried to submit (that’s happening a lot lately as well) but basically I think newhuns will continue with their history etc in tact.

That’s happened for just about all other clubs after admin. Liquidation is another matter.

The best outcome for us is that they will be hamstrung with downsized finances for years and years and they may be renting Ibrox from a third party for a long, long time.

It could be years before they are competitive.

As for their “history” – well, they are welcome to it. Who would want that crap anyway?

  11. So Craig Whyte is actually acting as an advisor to FIFA? Lets face it, he falls into both camps being targetted quite nicely.

ZURICH — FIFA is working with informers inside organized crime syndicates to help protect the World Cup from match-fixing and betting plots.

FIFA’s security director Chris Eaton outlined a strategy on Thursday for soccer’s world governing body to attempt to stop the fixing of international matches that results in millions of dollars in profit.

“What we’re doing now is developing sources both in criminal organizations and football that will advise us,” Eaton said in an interview published by FIFA’s website.

“We are creating a hostile environment for match-fixers to make them realize we will expose them, name them, and make them subject to investigation somewhere in the world.”

FIFA’s pro-active plan to get information from inside crime syndicates is a direct response to its 208 national member bodies being targeted to help fixing plots.

“The infiltration of serious criminals into our associations and football generally is the most pressing issue,” Eaton said.

FIFA believes crime gangs have received inside help from soccer officials to organize international matches and select corrupt referees.

FIFA will open a whistleblowers’ hotline next month offering rewards and amnesties if players, referees and officials provide detailed information about their involvement or offers to help fix matches.

The three-month campaign comes before qualifying for the 2014 World Cup intensifies this year.

Its not like me I know but can I ask a serious, possibly stupid question, you can all refrain from commenting on that part… thank you,

IF and when thems tax case(s) are finally resolved, and I understand the wee tax case bill has been paid, would UEFA then be obligated to ask questions of the SFA as to how thems european licence was in fact granted over the years given thems did in fact have an outstanding liability to the tax authorities, which if my understanding is correct breaches the licensing criteria?

  14. RobertTressell – “could someone explain again what rangers did regarding Season Book money?”

Whyte has spent a single, shiny pound coin. That is all. The bank had to be paid their debt.

I am not surprised Whyte doesn’t want anyone to see their accounts until after March. Which he says is so he can get “legal advice Re the tax case”. March is coincidentally AFTER they will have had a tribunal decision and very likely will be in admin WAY before that. Basically he should have said “yees urny getting to see yon accounts. Eff off.”

He will not want any scrutiny on what he has been up to….

Is that a genuine article or made up?

has the Daily record seriously printed that pash today? I can’t stop laughing and I am on my third read!!

    HH

  16. tomtheleedstim – with the level of debt the tax case will bring against the actual value of Rangers (if Whyte presses the admin button now it is up to the administrator if he continues with the tribunal process. This is unlikely and far more likely the whole lot is due immediatly), I don’t see how they could get 75% of the creditors to agree to allow them to come out of administration. Entering administration is easy. Coming out again not so much….

Liquidation is almost an inevitability. Whyte is now preparing the hordes for this.

You watch now over the next few weeks the raft of articles coming up on the “benefits” of administration and the “benefits” of a pre-pack and Rangers 2012.

  19. h1>Levein: Whyte has to dig deep

SCOTLAND boss Craig Levein reckons Rangers will not be able to compete with Celtic for the SPL title in the second half of the season unless they strengthen their squad.

Gers manager Ally McCoist has a crippling injury list ahead of the William Hill Scottish Cup clash with Arbroath at Gayfield on Sunday afternoon. National supremo Levein believes Ibrox owner Craig Whyte must now give his old team-mate funds to bring in new faces during the January transfer window. He said: “If Rangers go into the second half of the season with that group of players as their back-up on the bench, and I mean no disrespect to anyone, they can’t compete with the strength in depth that Celtic have. “It’s going to be extremely difficult for them unless there’s more money available to bring in better players. “It would be difficult for Ally McCoist to deal with. I don’t know the ins and outs of what is happening, but strength in depth is a worry. Craig Whyte bought Rangesr for a pound so he must ahve made some savings when buying Rangers thanks to Sir David. So I urge Craig Whyte to spend the cash to allow them to take on Celtic head on. Why would he jeopardise 5 in a row ? It does not make sense to me ”

  20. RogueLeader – isn’t the critical factor the difference between Recievership and Administration for the Huns?

Receivership greatly increases their chances of continuing to exist, Administration almost certainly spells the end?

  21. Awe_Naw – I read that Matthew Lindsay piece last night. Absolutely incredible that the Scotland manager should be making a plea for funds for McCoist. Even with your sub-editing the message was clear!

  23. italiaBhoy – the difference between receivership and administration is down to the date on the debt is it not? I may be wrong. As the Admin legislation replaced the receivership stuff in 03? There would have to be a legal argument on that. The debt is historical but they were served with it after 03. I think it would be the post 2003 legislation. As I said I might be barking up the wrong tree.

  26. RogueLeader,

As far as I understand it (from reading the RTC blog, particularly a poster called The Don), RFC’s debt is pre-2003, therefore Receivership rules would apply.

It was speculated that this would allow CW an easier escape route, allowing him to “hive down” RFC pretty quickly and leaving everyone else, including HMRC, absolutely high and dry.
