Next year’s Jackie McNamara, Rovers, Kieran

538

Of course, it happened in our ’67 anniversary season. Celtic were drawn away to Albion Rovers in the Scottish Cup, as the Rovers dumped Queen of the South out of the competition last night. The tiny Lanarkshire club (arguably the smallest in Scotland) don’t have an illustrious history, but Jock Stein played more games for them than any other team. In Coatbridge, that counts.

I’m sure it makes sense for Kieran Tierney to have a shoulder operation while he’s out with an ankle injury but it’s very unwelcome news that the player needed the work. Despite upbeat reports I’m sceptical the op will not further delay his return. For a start, any notions of getting upper body work done are no longer valid.

Uniquely in European football, Celtic’s season is skewed to the start, not to when the prizes are given out at the end, which have become a meritocratic formality. With no European football after Christmas this season, the remainder of the campaign will be about getting ready for July and August, when the really important stuff takes place.

Kieran will miss three Champions League group stage games in total, last Sunday’s cup final and some atmospheric games to come; this will be the source of some regret to the teenager. In compensation he can look forward to picking up a league winner’s medal at the end of the season, and hopefully being in top condition for the qualifiers.

To be fair to Robbie Neilson, even when he was a success at Hearts he wasn’t overwhelmingly appreciated. This season it looks like the party’s over, so I understand why he would take a job at MK Dons which, on the face of it, looks like a dangerous step.

Dons are two points above relegation (to the fourth tier), without a league win in two months. The club has serious structural issues which any new manager would find difficult to compensate for with little more than a few fresh tactical notions. But at least Neilson can’t be blamed for relegation, should it happen.

He’s next year’s Jackie McNamara.

  1. How did huns not win? ref let them play to different rules. they can tackle from behind, lead with elbows and pull people back with two hands ..no yellow cards and in most cases no fouls either! So bigoted . we will struggle to get trble. it will be full time bigotry in all our cup ties

  6. Morning from a chilly Staffordshire – off to visit friends in Northumberland for a few days – Rugby loving mate – ah well.

As for last night – anyone who ever gave thomshun the benefit of the doubt – surely not after that performance. Incompetent or a cheat – either way no place as a referee (except in scotia)

  7. On Saturday, assuming that Sinclair is still not fit, I’m sure a lot of us would like to see Griffiths start. I don’t think BR necessarily has to switch to 4-4-2 to accommodate him. I’d be interested to see Griff deployed in the same role as Sinclair out left, where he is constantly looking for runs inside and doubling up as a striker in the right situations. I think this is a role the Griff could adapt to and it would be quite interesting to see him given a shot at it.

Having said that, BR always picks the team that suits the system for a particular match, and sentiment doesn’t come into it in the same way as it does for us. Griff could be sitting this one out as well.

See, I CAN post about Celtic…

  8. I think the pumping the huns will get at the Hate Factory on Hogmanay, might be too much for a lot of the hun hordes…….

  9. !!Bada Bing!!

In light of that, it makes the decision to hold that ridiculous match, on a ridiculous day, at a ridiculous time all the more bewildering…

  10. AN TEARMANN @ 8:41 AM,

Interestingly heard Wardo moan about the 15 sec delay between the off-side goal bing awarded and the linesman deciding the off-side player was interfering with play. A chum of mine from the darkside posted his frustrations n this regard on FB.

Now I believe everyone including MW has agreed it ws no goal and the linesman eventually got it right.

So why another farce with the Scottish Football Officials?!

    Here’s my take…

Thompson sees the possible infringment but does the necessary and gives the benefit of the doubt to Newco Rangers.

The officials on the sideline see the replay think… we’re no’ going to get away with this one.

They let the mike’d up Officials on the pitch know, the Linesmen takes the appropriate retrospective acton and makes the correct decision. No goal.

It’s the “Dougie Dougie” nonsense all over again.

It Officials are allowed to be mike’d up and communicate on these matters, that information should be recorded and be part of the match report/records… if anyone has cause for concern it should be available for scrutiny.

  13. In a bizarre twist, McInnes goes to Ibrox on Saturday under pressure, when in reality it’s the job he covets the most. I reckon the sheep supporters will turn on him if they lose on Saturday.

  14. Ok. Seeing as it is the first of December here is my (initial) Christmas wish list. Soft Loan Co. to lose their next two matches.

  15. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

In any other country a newly promoted, four year old team playing their first season in the top flight, staying up would be seen as being a good achievement.

With a bigger budget than all bar one of the league, maybe a top half finish.

But here everyone has to pretend that it is a 140 year old club with 54 titles, so “another” title is expected.

Oh, and of course no acknowledgment that the “same club” hadn’t even won a fair title in the last twenty years!

  16. thetimreaper

If McInnes is cold and calculating he will be desperate for a win on Saturday as it would move him one step closer to a vacancy at Ibrox.

If he is a tactically inept manager with sympathy for his boyhood heroes then Sevco have a good chance.

Of course he could be desperate to win because he’s…you know…a professional employed to do so…hmmm.

  17. With the heavy fixture schedule this month and all games apart from the first and last being against teams from the bottom 6 I fully expect BR to use the opportunity to give the fringe players a chance to prove themselves and also, if he hasn’t done so already, decide who is surplus to requirements. It also provides an opportunity to rest some of the squad/protect them from injury i.e. Dembele, Simunovic, Lustig, Broonie

  18. No matter what Mcinnes wants from the game on Saturday, shoorly his players will want to pump the manky mob anyway and will do their best.

Or are they all huns in sheeps clothing as well?

Yes they will, but McInnes has shown that tactically he isn’t very good. It is very easy to pass your way through the middle of Aberdeen because of the way they are set up. Even when Aberdeen beat Sevco at Pittodrie it was only because Sevco were awful – Aberdeen themselves were pretty poor in that match and I put that down to McInnes setting up his team to sit off them. They were lucky in the end to get a win.

Personally I would be happy with McInnes getting the job at Ibrox. I don’t rate him…as you can tell :)

  21. Noticed a mention on the Johnjamessite of the first Q&A with JPT.

One of the comments following the piece talked of any discussion about who is Scotland’s most successful club being an exercise in oneupmanship and points-scoring.

    Not the case.

It’s about establishing the truth, something in very short supply in Scottish football.

And that truth confirms Sevco as a new club.

Cheers dude! As mentioned – I started it to keep me out of the pub. Clearly I better find something else to do when I now in there with Jambos! Was funny last night. In the end. At one point it started to get a little sombre/ugly. But then the ref got all confused and made a correct decision! :-)

  24. Tactics for Aberdeen on Saturday, attack, attack, attack. Press the Huns high up the park and they can’t cope. Win the ball high up the pitch whilst their full backs are awol and you will get joy. If McInnes puts 10 behind the ball and plays to scrape a win he deserves the sack.

  26. In a way this E Tims article tells supporters of Celtic and other clubs what they are up against.

You would imagine that 5 years after bending/ breaking the rules the SFA would not attempt the same again, but this is Scottish football backed by Scottish media.

    http://etims.net/?p=10440

It’s not the first time the SFA have used STV to try and change what UEFA intend.

It’s not a given a licence will be refused to TRFC (who might not qualify) but it’s not a shoo in by any manner of means and it’s why Res12 matters.
