Nomme Kaljur biggest game of the week is tonight

449

In a little over five hours, Nomme Kalju are in domestic league action, their 20th game of the season.  2018’s champions are level in the battle for third place with tonight’s opponents, Paide, so this will be a competitive encounter.  All things considered, the forthcoming games against Celtic are less important than finishing third and qualifying for Europe next season.

They are five points off second and 10 from the top of the table.  It has been a disappointing campaign for the two-time Estonian champions, the most significant positive being this week’s Champions League qualification win in Macedonia over Shkendija.

Like Kilmarnock, who went down to the other CQN last night, Shkendija are preseason, and having won away, should comfortably have taken care of business in the second leg, but weakness in the other kind of legs is likely to have been their downfall.  Both teams were clearly drained from their first competitive action of the season, leading to bizarre results.

Nomme probably have the lowest economic footprint of any club Celtic have faced in European football (Lincoln Red Imps may just edge them).  Wednesday’s game at Celtic Park will certainly contribute more to the economy than their entire 2018 exploits.  This tie is a fairy tale for Nomme Kalju, who will transform their 2019 economic footprint with TV rights for the home game, and a gift to Celtic, who had the far tougher task of overcoming Rosenborg at the same stage a year ago.

The European draw gods were unkind last season, let’s hope they continue to pitch softly to us for another few rounds.

  1. The ticket prices are too high – they have been stepped up each Season – for these qualifier Seasons.

That Celtic through no fault of their own, huv to negotiate.

Root and branch clear out needed. Clearly not fit for purpose. The Word progressive sends shivers down my spine these days but the SFA has to be cleared out and Business dudes that are the best in their field and can build things need to be in situ so Celtic and other Scottish Clubs and even Sevco can grow properly.

looks like Celtics next qualifying CL opponents can be any of:

    PAOK

    Qarabag or Dundalk

    Maribor or AIK

    Crvena Zvezda or HJK

    Maccabi Tel-Aviv or Cluj

    Valletta or Ferencvaros

  4. These (hopefully 4) qualifiers should be capped at £20. The club made over £100m last year-without CL qualification. They don’t need to rip the erse out of these games. If, as we should, have group games in either CL or EL in addition to the 3 domestic competitions the fans will be shelling out plenty.

  16. Celtic legend Tommy Gemmell’s football boots sell for £18,000

Gemmell wore the boots to score during Celtic’s historic European Cup triumph

The football boots Tommy Gemmell wore to score during Celtic’s historic European Cup triumph have sold for £18,000 at auction in Glasgow.

The left-back struck the equaliser against Inter Milan in 1967 as Jock Stein’s men became the first British club to lift the famous trophy.

For the past nine years the battered Adidas boots have been on display at Hampden’s Scottish Football Museum.

They were bought by an anonymous private collector.

The boots were part of a private lot being sold at McTear’s Sporting Medals and Trophies Auction by a Glasgow businessman who was a friend of Gemmell’s family.

The auctioneer’s hammer came down at £14,000 but the boots will cost £18,000 when buyer’s commission and VAT are added.

Gemmell, who died in March 2017, aged 73, played 247 times for Celtic from 1961 to 1971 and scored 37 goals.

During a glittering career the defender won the European Cup, six league titles, three Scottish Cups and four League Cups.

He was also capped 18 times for Scotland.

His boots had been owned by a man whose father was friends with both Gemmell and Auld.

The father was with the defender after a training match in 1967 and asked jokingly if he could have a “token from Tam”.

Gemmell tossed him his worn out boots and said: “I wore these in Lisbon, tell the wee fella to look after them.”

Brian Clements from McTear’s said: “Any memorabilia associated with Celtic’s momentous 1967 European Cup win is important but the boots that scored one of Celtic’s two goals are on another level entirely.

“We knew there would be significant interest in the lot and we were not disappointed. There was some fierce bidding with the boots eventually selling for £18,000 to a private collector.”

Other Lisbon Lions items sold at the auction included Jimmy “Jinky” Johnstone’s match-worn jersey from the ill-tempered game against Racing Club in the 1967 World Club Championship in Uruguay, which went for £5,400, and Bertie Auld’s Adidas holdall from the European Cup, which fetched £2,300.

  17. remember that joke about the guy in the bar in glasgow, who ask the barman to put his travel holdall behind the bar for safe keeping
