One for the Zonal Detesters, ‘Playing’ Ashley

499

It was far from beautiful flowing football at Inverness yesterday but the players raised the tempo sufficiently to get the result. Leigh Griffiths scored a classic poacher’s goal. He missed plenty against Kilmarnock and Ajax but that’s part of the territory of being a striker.

I was delighted to see Carlton Cole make his first appearance for the club, and for anyone since last season. His first touch could have resulted in a goal but his sheer body mass caused sufficient panic in the Inverness defence that a goal resulted soon enough. There’s a lot of work ahead as Carlton looks to get match fit but he’s exactly the kind of foil we’ve missed this season.

For all the Zonal Marking Detesters……… We’re now man-to-man and we’re still conceding headers in front of goal. The problem was not resolved with the switch to man-to-man. Defending corner kicks requires a physicality and alertness which we’ve missed all season. The sooner we fix this and get back to zonal the better.

On the subject of physicality, Dedryck, this is your hand. A brick wall should have been thrown up in front of Miles Storey at the Inverness goal. I accept we have unresolved issues at set-pieces and that we’ll lose goals as a consequence. Goals conceded on Thursday – a deflection-come-ricochet, and a breakaway, had little to do with the defence, but yesterday’s Inverness goal was just rank bad defending.

At Carfin on Friday I told Phil MacGiollaBhain that there was no way Dave King could weasel out of paying Mike Ashley his £5m, having said he would do so. Phil referred me to the “glib and shameless liar” part of King’s past and not to be so naive. He could have a point.

Ashley holds the aces here. Any attempt to ‘play’ him will fail.

Zonal marking doesn’t only occur at corners…

In any event it doesn’t matter what system you employ when the defenders you have are as bad as ours

Didn’t think Craig Gordon was to clever at the ict goal yesterday.HH

Both Lustig and Boyata stood watching instead of breaking their necks to get back as the ball rebounded out from Gordons block. Not saying they would have stopped a goal but they could have done a lot more.

Having said that, a good number of the goals we have conceded, would have been saves by Craig Gordon last season.

  4. First Tier Tribunal, Upper Tier Tribunal, Court of Session, then after the Supreme Court we have one last hurdle at the Ultimate Smackdown Palace of Righteous Justice. Only then will we be at peace.

Still utterly frustrated by the direction of the club.

Ronny’s Euro record is lamentable but who would replace him?

The football strategy is a shambles – the striking situation, GMS, Blackett etc.

Our slide to mediocrity continues and our co-efficient suffers.

  7. Reminder of the process I spoke of before:

BDO have a duty to eliminate ‘bad creditors’ from the claimants. They successfully did so with Dave King, his £20m claim was chucked out. This makes a difference to all other ‘good’ creditors as their share of the pot is then more.

The BTC is still potentially ‘bad’, hence they have to exhaust that. Again it makes a big difference to the good creditors already established.

While the cost of testing it as good or bad will be a mistake if it is good (it will reamin the same list as now, and everyone has less to share) they have decided they must try.

With 3 judges at the CoS effectively ruling the creditor claim good this is a huge call by BDO. I though the defensible easier answer would be to accept the decision from Scotland’s highest court. The Murray Group admins have long since given up on the ghost.

Would love to see the rationale, don’t suppose we ever will. What would be interesting is if someone is underwriting the cost and therefore making the appeal no loss, and therefore inevitable.

  8. Lies, damned lies and statistics,

This season, in the league our bombscare defence and ‘wan up front’ have managed 41 goals for and 12 against after 16 games.

Last season our arguably better defence had conceded 10 and we had scored 33 at same stage.

The year previous, lennys rocks who broke shut out records had scored 38 and conceded 12 after 16 games.

Wee bit confused about the Sevco court case re the leaking of the SD retail deal. Seems like their argument is that they didn’t know it was confidential. But when SD won the injunction in June, Sevco lawyers claim was that there was no evidence as to the source of the leak.

Why not just say at that point that they didn’t know it was confidential?

    Strange….

An informed observer reckoned the impact of the Court of Session decision was worth “north of £1Billion” to HMRC.

That means a a huge amount of vested interest in the outcome of the appeal from EBT Scheme users and the wider Advisory profession.

BDO used a Contingency arrangement to pursue Collier Bristow, so they’re pretty good at ‘managing litigation risk’.

Given that, it wouldn’t surprise me if there was an external source offering to underwrite or offset the legal costs.

  14. Not a great game yesterday but 3 points gained and job done. Glad to see Carlton Cole brought on and he managed to liven things up but still looking a bit stiff on the pins. Had the misfortune to watch the much anticipated clash of Leicester City v Man Utd and what a terrible football match. I’m beginning to wonder are players in the EPL the most overpaid athletes in the World of sport. Thank God for that wonderful rugby match when Connaught had their first at Munster in 29 years on the same afternoon, great entertainment on the same afternoon.

Under the Celtic Quickworth-Lewis method, domestic results can only be cited in an argument if the overall effect serves to undermine the club, its manager, coaching staff or players.

  16. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Aye – it’s only European results that count when managers of Scottish clubs get judged.

Oh, except for Walter of course. Rubbish in Europe but a supposedly brilliant manager.

Oh, and not Le Guen either of course. Unbeaten in Europe but supposedly completely useless.

I agree that some of the exchanges seem rather childish but CQN has grown into more than just a Celtic site .Celtic might be the hub but it has also become a general chat site with Celtic issues the main but not exclusive topics.

Sometimes, the written ( or typed) word is not the best medium to capture the mood of a comment. I have seen a few fallouts on here but never when CQNers meet in person and all the little gestures and facial expressions come into play.

  18. Been meaning to ask for ages, but the Stokesy nonsense has prompted me now. Who is the coach guy who was on at half time ‘warming up’ the players during the Ajax game last Thursday? I don’t include Stokes in that group of players of course – his attitude was shocking, obviously couldn’t care less, wanted to play keepy up with the ball instead of doing what the others were doing, a real brammer just collecting his wages!!

  22. It is not given that they will be granted leave to appeal the Court of Session decision; there must be grounds. They are doomed I tell you.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  23. A post of a couple of weeks ago told us to keep in mind , the longer the liquidation process lasts the better the BDO profit margin.

I did offer that an appeal would be requested just before the deadline, this would invoke the 42 day allowance, my thoughts at the time, were that the appeal would be dropped as there is no legal case to question the judges decision, however I can’t help thinking BDO are keen to keep this rolling, and HMRC are keen to make it a British ruling as opposed to a Scottish one.

The only legal case I’d guess can be made is that the judicial case changed from the original tribunal charges.

I don think they will be given leave to appeal as I expect the Scottish judges will consider their decision and parameters correct and if HMRC want it to be a UK wide decision then they should deal with it in an English case.

Hopefully if/when Scott Allan does become a first team regular, Ronny will recognise that he is a playmaker and instructs him to just play football.

Let people like Johansen and Broony do the running about and the harrying – that’s what they are good at.

If we were to sign Pirlo in the morning, surely Ronny wouldn’t expect said player to adapt to that high pressing system or else?

    Nonsensical it is.

Let the footballers play the football.

The Celtic way is the best way.
