Outgoing First Minister’s selective criminalisation

757

I’m sure there are people all over England wondering why their manager is apologising for anti-IRA chants by England fans last night.  Someone likely pointed out to Roy Hodgson that his fans were breaking the law in Scotland by doing so, hundreds, if not thousands, could be criminalised this morning.

Their names and addresses are known to the football authorities, the match was televised and the chanting received widespread media coverage.  Police Scotland were all over the ground and had the England fans surrounded.

All this took place in front of the First Minister, whose government decided laws against bigotry and sectarianism left them unable to “equalise” fans of all colours, most of whom never chant bigoted or sectarian words.

Alex Salmond left the stage caring nothing that the police have no interest in applying his law on this occasion.  It wasn’t designed to criminalise the English, it was to criminalise Celtic fans.  If the Offensive Behaviour Act can be flouted in front of the nation, the police and the First Minister, without censure or action, it is an absurd nonsense.  The SNP government has refused to debate a review into the Act, never mind repeal it.  They are defending the indefensible.

  1. No reason has been given for Celtic’s request to have the St Johnstone home game in January postponed, but the same happened last January due to a money-spinning tournament in Turkey – Turkish Airlines Antalya Cup.

  2. What a strike by Wakaso in the Ghana v Togo match!

    Cheers for that Martim1980

Thanks for your reply, as Morrissey 23rd has stated the backers of res 12 were not just Cqnr’s and followers of Phils blog so how will we get to hear what the plans are 1 year on for this

Celtic are paid millions for these tournaments and it takes the players to a warmer climate for a mid-season break, but don’t let that stop you from your customary knee-jerk criticism of Celtic FC. I know you can’t help yourself.

  5. We are just a few hundred pounds short of the £1500 target re the raffle ticket sales to crowd fund the advertisement in Sunday Herald in January to outline our position regarding our League Cup semi final opponents being a new entity.

We are funding this via a raffle and have a selection of great prizes to give away including a rare bottle of whisky, which we will feature in the next edition of CQN Magazine.

However the main point is to raise the sum required so we can progress with this Statement from Celtic Supporters advertisement appearing in the newspaper, as a matter of record.

We will not stand behind their lie.

You can contribute by purchasing raffle tickets at http://www.cqnbookstore.com

Tickets are £5 each and you can buy 1, 2, 4 or even 10.

Any excess sums raised will be donated to the Malawi schools project, supported by CQNers this year.

  6. Am I missing something here regarding the OBA and last night’s singing? From an English perspective is singing “F**K the IRA ” any different from singing “F**K Al Qaeda”? Is it considered discriminatory and/or racist to slander a terrorist group (in British eyes) rather than a nation or religion?

Or have I misread Paul’s point?

  7. Well done Celtic on the early notification regarding the postponement of the St Johnstone game.

Your continued blind loyalty to all things PL, is as predictable as it is boring. The reason given on the website , will not stand up , if another ‘friendly’is lined up.We told them in the recent survey about kick off times etc, I hope you enjoy your journey home on a dark, possibly icy M8., on a Wednesday night.

I appreciate the need for Celtic to participate in these money spinning tournaments, however it is also another kick to ST holders. The cancelled game was to be on Saturday the 10th, no doubt the rescheduled game will be some evening.

Hopefully it will not be a Thursday as we should be on the road to Warsaw.

I also thought that we missed a trick after the successful Antalya tournament with not playing the Bhoys who performed so well against top notch opposition.

If we are to go to these tournaments lets hope RD & JC reap any benefit we obtain, both financial and with youth.

I can understand your point. Some weird attitudes being expressed across CQN these days and it is nothing like the place it has been for 10 yrs. Less humour, less tolerance and less fun. CQN has been amazing but now seems tired and overstretched.

There are few things more important than the Celtic but one of these is choosing to grow up and take charge of our country before it is privatised. That’s why 1.6 million voted YES.

  12. Well said timgreen

    CQN has ran it’s race.

  13. My friends in Celtic,

As a great advocate of equality, especially gender equality it would be churlish of myself not to congratulate Nicola Sturgeon’s appointment to First Minister.

  17. Lawwellsacountant….so by your thinking we should all vote lets say Labour in the next election…and if england votes tory then…then..

    aw thats right…

What is blog’s policy on swearing.

    More and more prevalent now.

Just seen f word and bu**er used in short space of time.

“SFTB….i would like to see a Scottish Labour Party for Independence…i would vote for them…but…dont have one…so as a YES supporter..best bet for me is i think SNP..

so i will PROBABLY vote for them…seems pretty clear to me..”

If probably is clear in your world then no wonder you voted for a maybe republic, a perhaps constitution, and a “it might be alright” financial plan.

“Your point on why has this not been done in the past?…i can only talk for myself ..i grew up a Labour voter from a Labour voting family..INDEPENDENCE was never discussed”

What?? Never?? Is the concept a recent discovery? Never heard of the SNP? Never knew that they were a Scots Nationalist Party offering Independence even with the heavy hint contained in the party name? Or was Independence not important to you but it has suddenly and recently become so?

“…but things and people do change..so now an INDEPENDENT SCOTLAND Is what i would like to see happen…”

OK. It is a recent whim. It was not important but now it is. You would be describing last year’s you as a cowardly, self-interested Orange Order supporting Unionist? Or was it 2 years ago? Were your parents equally rabid in their cowardly unionism? And all your forefathers?

As the facts are presented, I am as convinced as I would be by a reformed smoker or burglar. The feelings you are adamant about this week might prove quite temporary, going by your track record.

P.S. For the absence of doubt, it is not the Yes voting, nor the SNP voting intention, coy or otherwise, that I object to. It is the certainty that you are now on the side of right when you recently held “wrong” views. It is just as convincing as that SDP lot that left Labour in the early 80s- they ended up in the Liberal Democrats espousing LD policy with all the party loyalty of the born Liberal. So many of the Yessers are going to end up loyal SNP supporters too. Anyone But Labour, eh?
