Patience, flag and Siri

458

Nervous? Oh yes. Any one of a number of things can go wrong, up to and including a red card while conceding a penalty. Celtic will need to score three without reply before any of us relax tonight. It’s the kind of challenge which should be completed within 15 minutes but Brendan Rodgers is right to call for patience. Any rush to get the job done could produce fatal consequences.

18 years ago this week, in front of a packed and newly completed Celtic Park, Larsson, Lambert, Boyd, Rieper, Burley and co. faced an equally unfancied St Patrick’s Athletic but couldn’t put the ball in the net. And they guys knew a thing or two about playing the game. Football isn’t played on paper, sometimes you need reservoirs of patience to invest in this sport.

Remember to get along early to see the league title flag unfurled before kick-off. I know we’ve seen 11 of these events since 2001 but we should never take it for granted.

…………….and the game is on your season ticket.

Best wishes to Tony Watt, if he joins Hearts, and to Massimo Donati, who’s pitching his tent at Hamilton Accies this season. Both created great Champions League memories for us.

I know the Uefa response to Res 12 hasn’t been generally released but did Siri and Skybet get a copy as well as the SFA?

We need to be positive tonight and when we get through to the next round we need to be positive again. There is no point in approaching any game in a negative manner. H.H.

  2. Assuming we put this mob to the sword tonight I don’t fancy our chances on that pitch in Kazakhstan. Karagandy slaughtered us there.

I agree, but we were very positive in Gibraltar por cierto

  4. All thoughts and comments about Kazakhstan should be left until AFTER the game tonight por cierto.

Haven’t seen the sun today, there is a haze blocking it oot, I dread to think what the temp would be had the sun got through, it’s haf six and 44 deg with no sun, anyways, enough of my problems when our club have a few of their own.

I reckon Efe will play and he will be MoM, as for Bitton, I hope BR decides that McGregor or Armstrong can do a better job, but if he is in the window…..

How far have we sank when some are fretting over a game against part timers.

por cierto. I believe we carried no luck in Gibraltar on another night we would have won but coming back from any away European tie is always going to give you a chance of qualifying.H.H.

Assuming we progress tonight, we will have to do better in Kazakhstan than we did against Karagandy.

We performed heroics at CP to overturn the 2-0 deficit, I don’t think the team now are capable of such heroics.

Thanks for the info and the video link Zbyszek.

    They have an impressive record.

Rather lucky both their goals today were allowed, mind you.

  16. Zbyszek

That looks like a shocking surface to try and get any grip on, so anything could happen if we get through to go there, the first goal to Astana was a definite push couldn’t see the second clearly as the picture was blurred, the Astana keeper made a complete mess of a tame shot at the away teams goal, dont think he fancied carpet burns.

1st minute or last minute should not matter, if that was over the line then only just, if not had to be handball.

Also position of the Match Official for the first goal could not have been better to spot the push.

Maybe he is just not very good.

  20. Evening folks,

Bit mystified and surprised by our performance and result last week. However I fancy us strongly tonight. Think we will score a barrowload. The players and management will be feeling it, especially from the criticism last week, mostly merited. I think we will be out of sight by half time.

Here’s hoping. Enjoy the game folks.

So we got to Astana if we beat the Imps. How prepared will we be for that? Possibly the worst draw we could have got travelling wise.

Lack of planning again could scupper access to the Champions League. It’s not that Astana getting through suddenly is a failure on Celtics part but it does underline lack of planning for the worst case scenario.

We change manager at seasons end knowing in August last year that we would be going with a new manager. Last seasons lack of planning on replacing the two centre backs left us with no cover. How often has any manager had his first choice 11 in place before the qualifiers … The most important games of the season.

It’s like going into your major sales pitch with your number 1 customer, no time to prepare with your junior sales rep as back up – for those that like business speak around the football club.

Presumably we will play Inter in and around these games in another European country just to complicate matters.

  22. TeT his job is not to allow others to score, which he does, with alarming regularity

  23. Rock Tree Bhoy on

As long as we don’t start with Efe tonight we will be fine, on the other hand if he does start it will panic the crowd which will filter thru to guys on the park. I’ve nothing against the guy personally but would feel the same way about anyone who unsettles our defence the way he does us. All bets are off if Efe starts.

  24. Barney

    No he doesn’t.

His % rate is actually very good as a defender.

Funny how a couple, [ that would be less than a handful over three seasons ] of mistakes all of a sudden become alarming regularity.

From what I saw of our performance last week we lacked sharpness. There was a lack of bite in the tackle, general laid back lack of movement, nobody willing to take on a full back and no one willing to put their body on the line. This was a symptom of a lot of games last season. Players looking at colleagues to do something rather than taking the inniative themselves.

When you get 3 or 4 players up and ready to scrap knowing the ball is theirs or that their pass will be completed others start to follow suit.

That energy can come from Tierney Sviatchenko, Brown and Griffiths. McGregor has it.

  26. Gordon

Efe will start, imo. It would be an unnecessary risk to put one of the youngsters in there.

Brendan will go with the most experienced team he can muster. Given that we have a pretty young squad, experience is the order of the day.

Both you and Efe will have to deal with what comes through the gate.

  28. COYBIG…Celtic to win tonight and I’m the headline of a Clumpany blog. Happy days and good times :-)
