Pawns cinch and the proxy war

220

The dispute Newco have with the Scottish Professional Football League over their sponsorship deal with car retailer cinch might look a bit ridiculous.  The club are refusing to display SPFL sponsor logos and, apparently, refused to permit their manager to be interviewed by BT Sport unless the broadcaster taped over the logos at Motherwell on Saturday.

It’s an odd hill on which to stand, even after considering that cinch are direct competitors to the Newco chairman’s car retailer business. cinch will continue to advertise and gain market share at the expense of traditional retailers, the chairman is called Park, not Canute.

It makes more sense if you consider Newco want to replace SPFL CEO Neil Doncaster with a more compliant individual, think a 21st century Jim Farry.  If they can beat the SPFL in the courts, they can push for Doncaster’s removal with some authority. For this, any small hill will be sufficient.

This is a proxy war with the governance of our game is the real tide.

I like the Ola Solbakken rumour. He scored against the Hoops for Bodo/Glimt in their home and away European Conference League victories.

Don’t know what the Cinch contractuals are and don’t much care.

    My tuppence only.

I’d be surprised if the SPFL’s Contractual and Legal functions are as dysfunctional as Old Firm FC’s equivalents.

Do I have direct, forensic evidence of that alleged dysfunction?

    Of course not.

But, anecdotally, escalation to court proceedings is indicative of failings in the two functions above.

And Old Firm FC are in court an awful lot.

    Douglas Park?

Is it beyond the realms of possibility that a gnarled, staunch, old dinosaur ….

…. watching a business he built over a lifetime going slowly down the tubes

… and having invested a fortune in a football club (because his boy asked his daddy)

… while some chancer based in the southern hemisphere takes all the plaudits and none of the grief surrounding that club

… Upon realising a consortium of clubs agreed sponsorship with his competitor …..

Simply snapped, went all Captain Caveman and decided “f*** that for a game of soldiers”

As I posted yesterday or the day before, Old Firm FC will have their end of season league position payment suitably adjusted to recompense CINCH for the reduction in their exposure.

Can’t wait for the Ibrox reaction to that.

Why are the CQN guns of hate aimed at Dick Campbell today?

At least it takes the pressure off Dermot Desmond I suppose.

  6. Celtic dominate the PFA Scottish Premiership Team of the Year, with six players included in the 2021-22 edition.

With Ange Postecoglou’s men currently sitting six points clear at the summit and still on course for a domestic double, the Hoops’ success has been recognised, with Cameron Carter-Vickers, Josip Juranovic, Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic, Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi all selected, following a vote by their fellow professional players.

As for Celtic’s Glaswegian rivals Rangers, they have two players named in the XI in the form of captain James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos, while Hearts duo Craig Gordon and John Souttar as well as Ross County’s Regan Charles-Cook complete the team.

Celtic defenders Carter-Vickers and Juranovic have been important players in the backline for Postecoglou’s side this campaign, the former of whom has helped the Hoops keep 15 clean sheets in 28 league appearances.

Attackers Furuhashi and Jota, meanwhile, have enjoyed plenty of success in front of goal during their first season in Scotland, contributing to 25 Premiership goals combined.

As for McGregor and Rogic, they have been standout performers in centre-midfield this term, and their form has been recognised as the pair have also been nominated for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award.

Only 2 from JBH’s All Stars team???????????????????????????????

  7. Solbakken..now your talking.very impressed with him any time iv seen him(especially against us!)

Another Norwegian who greatly impressed me when he played against the Hoops was LB Birger Meling. Was sensational against us..wee Jamesie nevet got a kick.Playing in France just now..only 27..valued at 5m..go get him Celtic.

  9. After going onsite to Barrowfield to inspect the works, I have returned to the office and am catching up with the actual article.

Did I pick it up right, was the summary that Donald Park is a fat canute.

I don’t think SkyTV would have been happy at having paid to broadcast the game, the Fir Park club allowed the BT Sport cameras in to interview the managers.

  11. I have it from a completely reliable Ibrox contact, someone who works there with the players, that their players could not believe what they got away with in the semi-final. Lundstrum told him that he had words with Madden after Calmac tackle on Aribo in 8th minute. Along the lines of “if you are not booking him for that, you better let me away with similar”. Lundstrum said Madden smiled and replied “don’t worry about that”.

  12. I have no doubt that there is an accompanying agenda running alongside the ‘cinch’ one at Ibrox. I did post about this some time ago, mentioning Stewart Robertson’s pointed remark about the SPFL SKY deal being a “paltry” return on the value of Scottish football’s TV rights -a direct and undisguised put down on those running the SPFL/SFA.

What the motivation of such an agenda is not transparently clear, but we must assume that it is part of a campaign to ensure that the Ibrox club has more influence in the running of the game in Scotland. Circumstances over the past ten years have resulted in a ‘watering down’ of their hitherto dominant position in this respect.

Having said that, it does not automatically follow that the Ibrox stance on ‘cinch’ is wrong. It may well be that Doncaster signed the deal in good faith and in the best interests of all forty-two clubs without carrying out due diligence on conflicting arrangements at certain individual member clubs. Until the legal situation crystallises, none of us is in a position to judge, or, criticise out of hand…..we wait and see…..although, as with all things court & legal involving the Ibrox club, it’s not a cinch that it will ‘all come out in the wash’, and even if it does, it will probably take years to do so.

Some mixed metaphors here, and more than a few missed opportunities into the bargain.

Canute, a thousand years on remains a much misunderstood man, even in Glasgow. And the use of the hill as an analogy? King of the Hill? Mike Judge, or Pieter Breughel perhaps? Or maybe Sidney Lumet’s ‘The Hill’ not sure Douglas Park could play the Sean Connery role. Uphill struggle or downhill from now on, that is the question. And back to the use of tide at the end, are we missing the obvious here…..

Well what isn’t going to happen is the Cinch money will be fully, if any, paid out to Old Firm FC.

How could it, they say its in competition with their own CEO or Chairman, whatever Park is. So the do not indulge in any advertising and what expect to be paid irrespective. Childish economics😱

employ somebody to wear a cinch sandwich board and have him follow the old firm manager and players from bus arrival, to pitchside warm up , to all their interviews, just be strategically in the frame.

I am critical of our board for many things, but given that we have a brilliant marketing department, I really feel we miss out on the easy banter opportunities too many times, rub their noses in it, let them know we know, a bit of bedevilment ……….

I wonder if anyone salvaged the “old firm arches” , put cinch on them, or this is a glasgow derby, or shame or HMRC just let the GB loose on it.
