Perspective as Champions face Best of the Rest

548

Let’s start by putting whatever perception lingers from Aberdeen’s result in Hamilton on Tuesday night into perspective. The goal they lost was only the second time they had conceded in six games. Incredibly, both were penalties. They have played an astonishing 617 minutes without conceding a goal from anywhere but the penalty spot.

Including those two penalties, they have conceded only four since Tom Rogic’s late free kick the last time we played them. This is a well-organised football team who have a script ready for Celtic. They will defend tightly, get the ball forward quickly and chase the life out of everything. The defeat at Hamilton was the first time they have dropped a point since Inverness withheld an onslaught to leave Pittodrie with a draw seven weeks ago.

Despite sitting second in the table with an impressive defence, Aberdeen are well below where they hoped to be at this stage of the season. One win from their opening five league games saw them struggle in the bottom half of the table. Clear evidence that their preseason plans did nothing for them in Europe or domestically.

The most surprising aspect of the Premiership table is that Aberdeen have recovered their natural position as Best of the Rest so quickly.

There’s a tangible confidence among Celtic fans right now. It doesn’t necessarily extend to travelling to face A German Team but most of us think we’ll take three points tomorrow. I know Aberdeen fans who were at Hamilton during the week also fancy their chances, especially if we are as wasteful in front of goal as we have been recently.

Brendan Rodgers will need to plan for tomorrow and for Gladback on Tuesday, a game which brings an end of a five week period with five intense sell-out games (and a few others). He used his options well at Ross County on Wednesday, wise selections are needed tomorrow also.

The income of £22m was in the Championship though so the increased wages will perhaps mirror the Premiership income.

However they have £15m in deferred income (explained as season ticket money up front that they will correctly release to income over the year) yet only £3m in the bank at that date. Trade Debtors Includes £11m in ST sales that are on payment plans by supporters.

So in essence at 30 June they had £3m cash plus £11m to come in from season ticket sales. They will have more sales post 30 June but no more than £2m to £3m max if you calculate an average £400 price per ST.

That’s £16m to survive a year. In the Championship (pre Barton, Krankjar, Senderos) the total wage bill alone (without a penny on anything else) was £13m! What is it now £18m? Running costs were £10m+, possibly static. £1.7m on Joe Garner (You boy! Pipe down at the back!)

They’re haemorrhaging millions and millions and there is no end in sight other than to massively slash player budget, hope to maintain the same number of punters through the door and not invest in a single player or infrastructure.

Wonky for Kolo’s aberrations, BMG would never of scored at CP and they haven’t hit the target in the first half tonight.

If we press hard and don’t give the ball away cheaply, we will have nothing to fear in A German Town.

    1. They are trading while insolvent.

    2. Unless they keep getting loans, which as far as I can see are not loans as such, more like a money washing facility, or they get a mega rich sugar daddy, like the one they pissed off, they are donald ducked, again.

  9. Joe Jordan on SSB tomorrow someone should phone up and

Personally thought BENNY wanted to play up front not at the back.

I remember back in the 70s BFDJ Told the Scotland manager, pick me to play as a centre half for Scotland, but not as a centre forward, Iv been looking for it but can’t find it, but he DID refuse to play for Scotland for that reason.

  13. Gutted to hear about Tierney, a joy to watch. Izzy did well on Wednesday night, do feel he deserves abit more game time. Sadly taken bad injury for this.

  14. Technically they are solvent, or at least have a positive value on the Balance sheet, in no small part the revaluation of Ibrox and Auchenhowie, but the assets are illiquid and they cannot pay bills as they fall due. However I totally get your point and as I said earlier it is interesting that every report (other than the blurb from Warburton) is signed by King. No other director has put their name to it. Internecine strife for sure!

  15. Gutted for Tierney but on the bright side a rest and a chance to look in from the sidelines. Never a bad thing for a young player.

1.Celtic scored 5 goals against Ayr Utd in the league cup semi-final in season 1969/70 (drew 3-3 and won 2-1) . Only one of the 5 scorers is still a Celtic player. Who were the scorers ?

The programme lists Celtic . (From) Williams ,Cunningham, McGrain,Quinn,McCluskey,Murdoch,McNeill,Connelly,Johnstone,Dalglish,

    Deans,Macari,Lennox,Hood,Callaghan and Wilson.

2.Two Celtic players helped Ayr to win a second division championship before they became famous for Celtic. Who were they ?

SAINT STIVS SAYS SACK THE BOARD on 28TH OCTOBER 2016 8:12 PM

Last season accounts but this seasons loans – £6.25M so far. Technically not trading as insolvent as they have the “promise” of soft loans in March. I wonder what would happen if anyone who has invested money in the Club 1872 challenged the legality of lending money that was, as far as am aware, was meant to buy shares.

    Dodgy indeed!

    BLANTYREKEV on 28TH OCTOBER 2016 8:17 PM

Wages are up 60% to over £10M so that will more than kill season ticket money! Operating costs this season will more than likely be over £25M. £16M coming in; £6.25M in loans; £850K still to be loaned. Shortfall of more than £3M I reckon.

    Plus, he is too intelligent.
