Petrie would rather sell McGinn to anyone but Celtic

602

It comes as no surprise that Celtic have made a bid for Hibernian’s John McGinn.  The player was the standout central midfield performer in domestic football against a Celtic team who are at their strongest in that area.

Should he sign, he would be a similar age to that of Stuart Armstrong when he joined Celtic three years ago, and who he will replace in the squad.  He is also a better player that Stuart was when he left Dundee United.  He has the engine and attitude for Brendan Rodgers to significantly improve him.

Goals grab headlines and the two McGinn scored at Celtic Park last season, as well as his goal at Ibrox which secured a win, raised the player’s profile, but goals only tell a small part the McGinn story.

Hibs will be happy to wait until the last week of August and will try to attract other bidders.  Despite taking a back seat when it comes to day-to-day duties, Rod Petrie remains a key figure at Easter Road and will do whatever he can to sell to anyone but Celtic.  I don’t expect Celtic to pay whatever Hibs ask, so the deal is far from assured, but with only 11 months remaining on his contract, he will definitely leave Hibs before 1 September.

I see Belgium got awful leaky at the back last night….

  1. Big bhoy. We had a place on the board (or are you really buying the Eric was on holiday stuff)?

It is inconceivable that Celtic didn’t know about the 5 way agreement. And let me ask you a question, if they found out that they had been stitched up then why not complain and get it dealt with. Why the usual cowardly silence?

Your approach is to stick your fingers in your ears and sing loudly and hope everyone stops saying things you don’t like.

As for theories and auldheid. What exactly has auldheid got right?

The Germans don’t really get the English problem with them, they’re too busy with rivalries that mean something like the Netherlands

  3. Missed first twenty minutes of first half. Hope second half is a lot better than what I’ve seen so far.

compare what auldheid has done for our support with your efforts

  5. Gentlemen what you should be alarmed about is why auldheid is getting his (or rather the SFAs and Celtics) excuses in early.

  6. CELTIC40ME, agreed, for them it’s all about The Netherlands and Italy

They did all their celebrating at the end of the qualification stage.

    Starry …

I dont disagree about England …. I think Kane is a genuinely world class striker … Alli has some outrageous skill, but (i) is a diver, and (ii) not much in the way of football IQ … other than that, they are good athletes, some of whom have a bit of skill … which is enough to get them past most teams …

but, they dont really seem to know how to play together, and as you say, their midfield is average at best … so, most elite teams will beat them most times for that reason alone … but, they have had a good draw, and in a tournament like this, all it takes is one bit of luck, or one bit of skill to win it all …

fingers crossed that today the luck is with columbia.

  9. I agree with neganon. We r being shafted. But who’s being threatened is the real question. Celtic board won’t stand up for the support. Been proved.

  10. Colombians pretty decent on the ball, good technical skills. Need to get support up to Falcao, and stop giving away stupid fouls. Where was Henderson’s right hand at the “incident”? Probably squeezing something from behind I suggest. HH

  11. Arise Sir Harry. Is the trophy awarded today or do they have to wait until the final?

  12. Ref was correct but he needs to get control of these bitching fannies on both teams

.Another set piece goal for England.

They look unlikely to score from open play.

  13. fairhill bhoy, hope you and your sister are wel,l last weekend thinking of you, new brighton 30 degrees in the shade.hh.

  14. Colombia have put no pressure on the England defense which is poor.

They have lost the plot and it seems only a matter of time before they have a man sent off.

McGuire dives for a penalty but ref and commentators ignore.

Starting to say were Moreloss gets it from, Columbians are shocking, lost the plot really.

Big Mike (in Toronto) is more than capable of speaking up for himself, as are you, but you are surely being disingenuous in claiming that Celtic actively opposed or tried in any way to oppose the Five Way Agreement. Correct me if I am wrong but I have yet to see any letter by or from Celtic that even mentions the 5WA, far less opposing it. Indeed I have, not knowingly, even seen the final version of it, though I have seen earlier versions. I mentioned last week, in a similar context, that Res 12 was now somehow being conflated with the 5WA, in the sense that that agreement prohibits or prevents certain penalties being levied on RFC or their successor club by the Independent Panel examining the issues from 2010 onwards. In footballing terms, the 5WA is and was an affront to Scottish football, and not only that, it has created the template, the rulebook if you like, for all that followed it.

    ————————————

I checked the dictionary for a definition of disingenuous which it defined as

    1. not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does.

Given that I (nor anyone else for that matter) knows what occurred when the 5 Way Agreement was being created I doubt that charge applies.

On the basis of my not knowing I don’t see where I claimed Celtic actively opposed or tried in any way to oppose the 5 Way Agreement.

The reason you have not seen anything from Celtic is that the decision to agree the 5 Way Agreement was similar to a Cabinet Decision, even if you do not agree with it, you have to abide by the majority view, so Celtic had no locus to say anything.

They would have been highly criticised by other clubs and the media if they had and probably most important of all, it would have changed nothing in the 5 Way.

Where I think Celtic might have taken their eye off proceedings is where the SFA were allowed to transfer the SFA Membership held by RFC to Sevco, but even there I don’t know enough to say they did or didn’t.

However one possibility in keeping with my general point about powerlessness is that Celtic might have opposed that membership transfer and pointed out that the norm for new clubs joining the SFA is having been accepted as a Registered Member on joining the SFL, they then have a fortnight to apply for an Associate Membership and after 5 years a Full Membership. However if Charles Green threatened to walk away without some notion of continuity and a voice at the SFA as a Full Member using the transfer of Full SFA Membership as the means, the other SPL clubs, out of fear of losing RFC altogether from the game and SFL clubs welcoming the injection of income Sevco would bring, would oppose any Celtic

opposition. It is a rationale that is in line with my general point of where the power lies in the 5 Way Agreement which is a child of fear.

My other two points were not instances of Celtic opposing the 5 Way which is how you appear to have read it, but instances of the difficulties Celtic face when opposing anything. I think the term is real politik..

They are not made up instances with no evidence to back them, the evidence is in the letters and the response although we do not know how UEFA responded to the May 2012 letter, but we do know how the SFA responded to the one released in September 2017 and the difficulties of going further if there is no support for it in the governance voting circles formed from member clubs.

Re conflating Res12 with the 5 Way that is just an excuse or reason or threat to prevent justice of the JPDT running its course and just what you would expect of Sevco.

I see on JJ’s site it was described as a get out of jail free card.

That might be true under football law, but there are higher laws of the land that might come into play and it’s a different kind of jail.

  17. Hoddle, describing the incident when Maguire dived trying to get a penalty, says that Maguire was very honest about that.

    ‘Very honest’ about cheating. Wow!

The biggest danger you face is that I might be. Then where would you be?

  19. Incredible that people actually believe that a member of the SPL board, who was a signatory to the 5WA didn’t know anything of it’s content.

If that was coming from the huns we would be bursting our sides laughing at them.

With respect anyone who believes that is a feckin moron.
