Players and manager with common purpose

803

Could someone remind me the last time we heard rumours that Ronny Deila had players rebelling against him?  I heard it often, and put it to the club, but was told the players had bought-into the changes, then underway and largely unproductive.  I think we got our answer after the full-time whistle yesterday.  This is a group of players and manager with a common purpose.

Celtic are now top of the league, a point away from qualifying from the Europa League knock-out stages, and are beginning to look like a team, but the results are largely secondary to the transformation.  Even if Virgil’s 90th minute winner hadn’t arrived at Pittodrie, progress is evident.  The fragility and lack of cohesion which marked so many of our performances until early last month has gone.

Success has many fathers so it’s difficult to know exactly what’s behind the improvement.  Scott Brown’s return from injury helped enormously, as did the return of Mikael Lustig and Adam Matthews (although I thought Adam had a torrid time with Niall McGinn yesterday).

The blossoming of Stefan Johansen has to be the most striking element.  He has without doubt been the most improved player this season and an early contender for end of season awards.  By any measure, he had no right to score his goal yesterday.

The return of James Forrest, who yesterday played his fourth game in eight months, will give the squad an extra boost before the final two Europa League group games.  If he has fully recuperated from the problems which blighted him throughout this year, he’ll give fresh impetus to the pacey product Ronny is trying to hone.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

    Kinglubo,

Re Jordan Larsson, I can’t think of many sons of famous footballers that were any good – except for Jordi Cruyff who was very average, and Big fat Frank who was probably better than his father. If you were to include sons of coke dealers who were decent footballers JT would probably be right up there.

I know some other clubs had issues with flares but it does appear to be very heavy handed for our support. I wonder how other fans are responding.

    =============================================

Dont know about others but they are at it with us in my view.

Next challenge will be the Hearts game, prior to the game 3 blocks of toilets are open in the Celtic Stand,at the end the block at the end is closed ” due to damage” and the others are locked ” because of leakage to the first aid room”.

    No damage was evident.

Steward will not allow toilet usage, confrontation occurs,Police called,Celtic fans causing bother again, those not arguing are pushed out into the street where there are no facilities,up against the wall, nicked for peeing.

This scenario is all caused by insensitive Police planning which I raised with the Chief Super of Lothians last year, and to his credit the matter was raised at their planning meeting and he allocated an Officer to overview preparations, which were subsequently successful. ( Toilets Open)

I will raise this again prior to the next game as we need to anticipate situations where we are being shown up in a bad light and are not always to blame..

I think JPT does well but its impossible for him to handle every concern, best write to authority concerned and copy him for info.

Hail hail to all in CQN land.

ST holder in FS1 with mini-calves for a few years now but fully expect the ‘he’s a current bun !’ fingerpointing – it has been a right of passage on CQN since Jesus was a laddie.

I fully respect your opinions, particlarly as I know you see the team in the flesh every week.

I also share some of your reservations, however I do believe progress is being made and yesterday the manager achieved his most important result since joining the club.

Hopefully, it is a turning point.

I was fortunate to be invited to a question and answer session with Ronnny Deila last Tuesday evening. He was asked how he rated his performance to date on a scale of 1 to 10.

Initially he said 3 then revised it to 4 (one less then your rating!).

He answered many questions but the message came over loud and clear that he only wants players who want to continually improve and have the right attitude (on the training pitch as well as on the field of play), game intelligence (“some players are un-coachable”) and have “legs” and can run and run.

Whether he succeeds in his quest is another matter but I think we have to be patient.

Lastly, I was at Pittodrie yesterday and I think his reactions at the end were entirely spontaneous – there was high emotion in the air.

    Regards,

Serious question would you rather have the search yesterday or the free for all attitude at Motherwell. The Friday night game when the seats got broke.

    ——-

There were reasons why Fir Park occurred mate, none of which would have been prevented by searches outside the stadium.

Obviously the smokes may have been stopped but nothing else.

    ——–

There were other factors but even if you stopped the flares that’s a bonus. Would rather have the control of yesterday and when you go to Edinburgh. Than the chaos of Motherwell/Dundee.

Good idea to copy JPT in. We do need to keep lines of communication open and everything we can do to stop the criminalisation of our young fans the better in my book. Unless its deserved of course :) hh

Very interesting day on TSFM, got involved with their poppy debate and raised a few points and issues that required quite a few to think about their stance. Went out for a wee walk and returned to find I am labelled a troll by TSFM himself and all my points were deleted telling the world I am intolerant. And there’s me thinking censorship is intolerance eh.

I expect the usual arseholes will want to agree with TSFM but that’s what they do innit.

I just see much of it as excessive, provocative and disproportionate mate.

Don’t get me wrong, if Celtic supporters are breaking the law then they should be held accountable in the same manner that any other football supporter, or indeed any member of the public, would be.

My issue is that it’s got much worse since the introduction of FoCUS and the OB Act, both of which are designed to criminalise football supporters and in my opinion, Celtic supporters in particular.

A friend of mine is a member of the executive club and the “audience” with the manager is an annual event for those concerned. The members are permitted to bring along a friend.

  15. Reading that the newest Glasgow club saw a group of supporters threaten a couple of law abiding Greenock brothers with violence just because they were directors of that new club. Just as well that those guys are well known for their tolerance.

Post deleted and banned, they never had to curtesy to reply to my polite email asking them to explain their stance.

You have to laugh though when you consider that one of their aims is for decision making in Scots football to be open and transparent lol

    Eddie..,

I did a follow up post asking who I attacked or offended, nothing, post also censored, to think there are people who left CQN to follow that site. Apparently CQN is not intolerant enough eh.

  22. I used to wear a poppy as a genuine mark of respect to the millions of souls who gave their lives in the two world wars against German militarism and fascism. I was profoundly affected as a teenager when I read Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain, a nurse who served on the Western Front.

It all changed for me when the poppy was shamefully hijacked by Blair and his cronies for propaganda purposes relative to the illegal Iraq war. That is why I no longer wear a poppy but I completely respect and understand why people still do so.

What really depresses me as a Celtic supporter is the fact that a small minority of pig ignorant arseholes within our ranks seem to be incapable of shutting their traps for literally one minute, thereby dragging Celtic’s name through the mud in the eyes of the general public.

I was told that people should be allowed to pay their respects to fallen soldiers.

I replied that using that logic there should be no objection to Germany doing the same for the SS.

First (innocent cannon fodder) and second world (a righteous fight) wars fair enough but including the perpetrators of war crimes as heroes is objectionable.

Apparently not and not a fair argument.

Thanks for that. I must admit to being impressed with RD after is unveiling press conference. Considering this is a massive step up he acquitted himself very well. His subsequent after match interviews where he seemed to be seeing non-existent progress was reason for concern. However that last handful of games has demonstrated some progress.
