Players and manager with common purpose

803

Could someone remind me the last time we heard rumours that Ronny Deila had players rebelling against him?  I heard it often, and put it to the club, but was told the players had bought-into the changes, then underway and largely unproductive.  I think we got our answer after the full-time whistle yesterday.  This is a group of players and manager with a common purpose.

Celtic are now top of the league, a point away from qualifying from the Europa League knock-out stages, and are beginning to look like a team, but the results are largely secondary to the transformation.  Even if Virgil’s 90th minute winner hadn’t arrived at Pittodrie, progress is evident.  The fragility and lack of cohesion which marked so many of our performances until early last month has gone.

Success has many fathers so it’s difficult to know exactly what’s behind the improvement.  Scott Brown’s return from injury helped enormously, as did the return of Mikael Lustig and Adam Matthews (although I thought Adam had a torrid time with Niall McGinn yesterday).

The blossoming of Stefan Johansen has to be the most striking element.  He has without doubt been the most improved player this season and an early contender for end of season awards.  By any measure, he had no right to score his goal yesterday.

The return of James Forrest, who yesterday played his fourth game in eight months, will give the squad an extra boost before the final two Europa League group games.  If he has fully recuperated from the problems which blighted him throughout this year, he’ll give fresh impetus to the pacey product Ronny is trying to hone.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

By the bye, did any TV channel comment on “clever” McGinn (copyright McCann), never mind condemn him, for diving and having our captain sent off?

Same happened last season,Stokes moved the ball from a FK at Tannadice,[backwards or square],and scored.A week later Moloney done the same for Scotland, and it was “really smart play”

  4. Aberdeen policing of Celtic supporters has a funny side for me, although it wasn’t so funny at the time.

My late brother Brian married an Aberdeenshire lass and moved up to live there. In fact it was his daughter I stayed with on Saturday night prior to the game at Pittodrie on Sunday.

In September 1994, Brian’s 40th birthday weekend coincided with Aberdeen v Celtic and a big party on the Saturday night after the game.

Mid Saturday morning, Brian and his wife were in a hotel bar near the harbour in Aberdeen. The Celtic Supporters bus from Motherwell was due to pass the hotel and the plan was to drop me and my 3 other brothers off to meet Brian and his wife for a bit of lunch before the game.

Brian was standing on the street outside the hotel as planned when the bus duly stopped and the 4 of us dismounted and greeted our brother.

Just at that, a big uniformed police sergeant appeared from nowhere and ordered us to get back on our bus. Brian was at pains to explain that he was expecting us for a family occasion but he was having none of it. All he would say, in his gruff, Aberdeen accent was, “Git back oan yir bus!”

Every word of protest was silenced by a wave of the hand and the plaintive cry, “Git back oan yir bus!”

A couple more coppers appeared and we knew we’d have to accede. As we trundled back on the bus, we were astonished upon seeing Brian, whose wife was sitting waiting for him in the hotel bar, being unceremoniously ushered onto the bus.

“But I wasn’t on the bus,” he protested.

    “Git back oan yir bus!”

Argument was futile and we were being threatened with arrest, which would have completely ruined the whole weekend for everyone. Eventually the bus moved off, with a perplexed Brian sitting there shaking his head. There were no mobile phones in those days and we had to get a taxi back to the hotel. It took about an hour and Brian’s wife was convinced he had met us and pissed off to another pub, leaving her to stew in her own juices.

She took a lot of convincing.

Celtic won. The party was a great success, and every time we saw a copper, one of us shouted, “Git back oan yir bus!”

  5. The Celtic security department seem to agree with focus that there is a problem with our support. Focus claim their tactics are intelligence led and having communicated with both frequently about this don’t hold your breath about the club backing their fans.

  8. Delaneys Dunky & Dallas, I posted a photo of the Lisbon Lions CSC on the CQN Facebook page. Would post it on here, but ah canny, don’t know how! So if some tech wizard would be kind enough to put it on here, I would be very grateful…not sure if ex lions will be! It will make you feel very old. Thanks Frantic07.

Was it 1960 that we played them at ibrox and were getting hammered

That was the first ‘big’ game my late father took me to . He wouldn’t let me go to another until the Dunfermline cup final in 65.

That Ibrox game was a nightmare for a young kid. Celtic fans on the pitch , bottles getting thrown at fellow celtic fans. Scary.

  14. A great win yesterday , and a right boot up the Archie for that Mcinnes , a right horrible bigot of a man . But although delighted to be back at the top of the league , I am not getting carried away , because we are far short of being a good team . I won’t argue that from the start of the season we have shown slight improvement ,but it’s just slight improvement . There are positions within the team that need vastly improved . We have a window coming up , an opportunity to fill in the blanks , which for me lie chiefly in midfield . Midfield should be our engine room , creating chances for our forwards . controlling the midfield area by nullifying the other teams attacks , and helping out our defence , tasks our present midfield fall down on , I lost count yesterday how many chances they had from us not clearing our lines at free kicks and corners . Ball bobbling around the edge of the 18 yard box , giving opponents free time to have a pop . And I still feel we are too soft .a point I have made on many occasions . I also hope we can fix VVD up long term ,as this lad is class , but I can’t see him being a Celt after January . All the points made are mho only , but that’s my view of where we are today

Interesting, the info I keep receiving is the searches on us are because of the high probability of flare usage based on previous games,I have not actually analysed any other occurences at other games to see if their reasoning is factual.

I know some other clubs had issues with flares but it does appear to be very heavy handed for our support. I wonder how other fans are responding.
