Players grounded in their community

963

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

  1. 67 heaven. Why are my club fining LG but letting the Hun behave so appallingly?

    please help me understand?

  2. The only reason I can see for Celtic fining LG is that he shouldn’t have been in the pub, or not drinking.

They have no other reason to fine him imo.

The Barca game tonight was superb, the standard of football on display from both side was breathtaking at times.

Scotland is institutionally anti catholic and anti celtic. It’s that simple.

I love Charles Green and his part in the downfall of sevco. Long may spivs like him reign over bigoted wee teams. Maybe allowing that lot to slit its throat over and over again is not worth interrupting.

The statement tonight was mild and not worth losing any sleep over it.

    Aye Doc, I read it

Why wait on any other club to respond.

As BT put it earlier, time for Celtic to act, with tackety boots, this silence and waiting game is frustrating the life out of us fans

Time now for clear and decisive action

I am one of the shareholders who feels to have been severely short changed by the SFA.

Incidentally acting with tackety boots did no harm for ex- Sevco CEO’s, in fact the media loved them for it

Really can are believe what the SFA have done today, a real game changer for Celtic ? Or should be

  6. Exiled sorry mate but nonsense. That’s just trying to find a reason for celtics continued appeasement.

How long do we need to put up with this?

Should we prop up those who run celtic?

  9. Neganan2,

Cannot argue with your 22.46 post.

It has always been so and always will be so.

There is little we can do to change that situation.

In 100 years it may change, but certainly not in my lifetime.

    Martin42.

PS sorry to miss you at CQTEN.

  10. CRC, are you saying I’m a highlight?

    Or just taking the pash:-)

CowieBhoy, high time the club took a stance, but all the dicks have to be in a row first.

Certainty, the club won’t make that move until they have that, with good reason, I hope this gives them it.

  11. Big wavy. I could not disagree more. Celtic have tonight doffed the cap and put us once again at the back of the bus. Yes mr SFA sorry you aren’t happy.

But meanwhile the Hun do what they like.

The last 3 or 4 years have been so cathartic and yet frustrating. The veil of the so called conspiracy and corruption at the heart of Scotland has been openly revealed. But so many don’t have the courage to point at it and say it like it is.

    Are we really that cowardly?

  12. NA2

    How is that nonsence ?

If he shouldn’t have been in the pub, then fine him as he was in the pub, otherwise they have no reason to fine him.

As for the appeasement, I agree with you 100%

  14. Neganon2, gotta disagree on this one.

From that statement I read the club telling the SFA to back off, we have dealt with this.

If the SFA push it, Celtic will push right back and defend the player.

    My interpretation.

  15. DjYNWA67IgnoresTheWhiners on

Truly shocking that on the day we have to read this:

An investigation into claims Celtic manager Neil Lennon was abused by fans while at a cup match between Aberdeen and St Johnstone has found insufficient evidence of any wrongdoing.

It was claimed that Lennon was abused and had coins thrown at him by supporters at the League Cup semi final at Tynecastle stadium in Edinburgh on Saturday February 1.

Lennon’s agent, Martin Reilly, said at the time that his client had coins thrown at him and was spat upon during the game.

It was claimed Lennon walked out of the stadium early, shortly after Adam Rooney scored the third goal in the 62nd minute of Aberdeen’s 4-0 victory.

Celtic hit out at the behaviour of some supporters in the stand after the alleged incident.

But it can now be revealed that Police Scotland’s Football Coordination Unit (FoCUS) have finished their probe and did not find enough evidence to prosecute anyone.

A spokeswoman said: “Following reports of a crowd disturbance at the Aberdeen versus St Johnstone League Cup semi-final at Tynecastle on February 1, Police Scotland’s Football Coordination Unit can confirm that their enquiry has been concluded, and that there was not sufficient evidence to bring charges against anyone.”

A statement from Aberdeen FC at the time said: “The support we enjoyed at Tynecastle was absolutely fantastic and helped to create an incredible atmosphere that the manager and players acknowledged played a major part in what was wonderful day and occasion for Aberdeen Football Club.

“However, it would appear that a tiny minority within the main stand behaved in a manner that is completely unacceptable and has absolutely no place in football and we would urge anyone who has any information as to the identity of those responsible to get in touch with the club in order that appropriate action can be taken.”

we also have to read reports of this:

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has been issued with a notice of complaint after he was filmed mocking Hearts before their derby win over former club Hibernian.

    Griffiths: Was filmed mocking Hearts

The ex-Easter Road front man was recorded on a mobile phone singing “Hearts are going bust” in a capital pub in the hours before the Tynecastle clash on Sunday.

The footage of the 23-year-old, who sealed a £1million switch from Wolves to Parkhead in January, was posted on YouTube where it spread like wildfire.

Now the Scottish Football Association’s compliance officer Vincent Lunny says the Scotland cap has a case to answer.

He has been accused of breaching Disciplinary Rule 86 – which demands players, staff or officials act in the best interests of the game – by singing in public about Heart of Midlothian FC in administration.

A principal hearing has been set for Thursday, April 24.

Hearts boss Gary Locke was questioned about the video on Tuesday morning and said: “I haven’t seen it. Obviously you read about it and according to reports I’ve heard he is not a very good singer.”

I don’t think the Scottish authorities could gesture a more blatant f*** you to those within the corridor’s at Celtic even if they were to walk out onto the pitch during the clubs next home game, to give a lap of dishonour with 2 fingers raised to all those within’ Celtic Park, while a band of Orangemen plays the Sash in the background.

So there is insufficient evidence to press ahead with a case, yet there were a couple of media journo’s who both verified the abuse being meted out & were covered in liquid which was thrown at Neil Lennon, not to mention the Laptop that had been destroyed after it also was covered in liquid.

No doubt the journalist was reimbursed for the value of the destroyed Laptop though.

Scottish independence, do you think things (regarding bigotry) will improve or deteriorate?

If the above is anything to go by then you will all be burned outta your homes within a year.

  18. CowieBhoy, there’s the ducks.

I hope the club are aware of this.

    Anyhoos, night all.

  19. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    bsr,TET,

I imagine that in every player’s contract there is a code of conduct.

Players have to, at all times, whenever they are in public, remember they represent the club.

    Different rules for supporters.

    Big wages = Big responsibilities.

I believe that Celtic had dealt with the issue, but with the SFA’s muscle flexing, they went public.

As I said earlier, the crucial part of the club’s statement is the last part.

Wait until the dust settles before we condemn our club.

  20. Martin42 I am sorry I missed you too. I was so pleased to meet Paul and offer my apology for previous inadvertent hurt I had caused both you and him. My apologies to you too.

I don’t agree we can’t do anything about it. We have a fantastic opportunity to highlight it now. My and your club was formed for such a moment. But our custodians simply don’t care. They Re obedient and subservient. Why???????

Big cup, winners. My hypothesis is that celtic are more that simply a football club. I hope you would agree. As the Seville book sub text says we are a movement. If so it’s only the support who are. Only the support. Those who run the club may use marketing phrases but clearly don’t care. There is now a massive body of evidence to all of us.

WE and the CLUB are NOT goal congruent! they care about money and we represent a minority in scottish society. We are riven and divided. And we cannot reconcile it.

I offer no answers apart from an unwillingness simply to pay money to a celtic who prop up sectarianism. That’s what we are.

Exiled. You can’t get fined for simply being in a pub. You can’t get fined for singing the truth. So celtic have simply agreed withe the SFA. Why?

  21. Much preferred if Leigh Griffiths had given his Hibees pals the bonfire song ,as sung by those now providing his wages, in the Roseburn and at Tynecastle on a number of occasions this season

My only gripe with his antics is that being a Celtic asset and dancing on the top of beer soaked tables in a packed public house isn’t really looking after yourself and one slip could have resulted in us being denied of his playing services for a while.

Ps did the scottish football authorities take any action regarding this matter which was witnessed and heard by the scottish media and no doubt the match officials on the day

I am not comdeming the club.

I just think they should have made a statement sticking up for their player, he has broken no law of the land, he was no being offensive in any way at all.

I would also doubt there is anything in his contract that states he can’t go out with his mates for a beer, nor would there be anything in his copntract stating what he can and can’t do when he is outwith Celtic business.

I accept that as an employee of the club, he should act responsibly, but who is to say what he did is irresponsible.

Is telling the truth now a fining offence ?

I am sick of the appeasement, I would rather we jacked it in that cow tow to them, they hate us, always have done, always will do, but to give in to them, soreee, not for me.

    HH

  23. Doc. With respect you are missing the point. The point is that celtic have chosen to punish LG is my point of anger. All celtic are now doing is a daily mail like rush to be the frost to punish. Yet crimes far worse by the Hun get left aside and unquestioned. Like attacks on NL go are let go.

Caloric continue to practice the worst from of appeasement is an embarrassment to me personally and to other celtic fans.

Geordie you too are missing the point. LG is an employee of celtic but the SFA must act equally to all. They clearly do not and therefore celtic must act against inequality. Even if it is simply to protect their employees.,I am diss appointed in your attempt to dehumanise my by your usual comment incidentally.

  24. Neganon2, can you please point me to a post you have made in the last 5 (five) years where you have supported Celtic?

  25. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

No matter the issue it is somehow Celtic’s fault. You attack me and mines.

CELTIC SUPPORTERS DO NOT ATTACK THE CLUB.

You were in dialogue with Auldheid earlier; a model of positive critic I’d suggest ?

  26. Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar on

I must have had my head in the sand at various points today, I was completely unaware that FOCUS had concluded their investigation of the assaults on Neil Lennon during the Aberdeen v St Johnstone Scottish Cup semi final.

Had the culprits been members of the Celtic support they’d have used NASA technology to identify those responsible.

Columbo would have been flown over from the States.

Inspector Clouseau would have this very minute been making his way through the Channel Tunnel.

Morse would have been brought back to life.

Bergerac would be borrowing Paddy Gallagher’s speedboat.

Poirot would be working undercover as a sprout seller.

And Professor Plum would be claiming it was a Tim, in the Main Stand with a Green Brigade scarf.
