Players grounded in their community

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

  1. Should Neil Lennon pick Leigh Griffiths next time we play Hibs?

Does our manager now have an awkward decision to make? Let’s hope hibs get relegated. That will resolve it for next season.

  2. Big cup winners. Auldheid is a far better supporter than me. That is unarguable. But the proof of the pudding is always in the eating. We have faced open corruption and those who run our club have done precisely nothing. Auldheid and others have offered a way to deal with it.

But nothing has happened yet. Nothing.

  3. Tom Molach. So let me get this right. Your reason for supporting the clubs statement is because he is a bibs supporter and you believe supporters cannot be professional agains the team they support.

    Is that your excuse?

I feel it’s you who is missing the point due to your entrenched views regarding celtic.

Clubs often fine players and sometimes it’s an attempt to soften any punishment given out by the fa.

In this instance I think the sfa don’t have a leg to stand on and I will be.stunned if lg gets any sort of punishment from them.

Who knows for sure lg wasn’t meant to be somewhere else? Who knows for sure the club haven’t got some ‘keep aff the front page’ policy?

The fine, that so many seem to be wetting theirselves about will probably be a couply hundred quid which will end up in some kids charity coffers come the summer.

I apologise for dehumanising you as you put it. I feel it doesn’t take much for you to appear and get tore into celtic and the board.

    Mon….gies a cuggle :)

  5. Tom Molach. Why don’t you stop being lazy in your thought process and look back your self. There are probably hundreds of posts where I am thrilled, delighted and massively pleased at celtic.

Deal with what is in front of you to go and write for the daily record.

    TET,

    That is the point.

Celtic are not given in to them. They state that they are going to defend their player.

Club discipline is another matter altogether and doesn’t depend on the law of the land.

LG is not the first player to infringe club rules and whether we like it or not, his actions, harmless as they were, did not reflect well on the club.

Forget the accumulative grievances we have. On this one issue, he left himself open to the SFA ‘s agenda.

He will have been made aware of the difference in being a Celtic player and a supporter, of any club.

I believe and hope that he gets the message and doesn’t become another Riordan, who couldn’t separate his professional life from his social life.

    PS.

Even the Lions were fined for infringing club discipline, even though many thought it unfair.

  7. Goerdie you are only making excuses for celtic.

Yea, lets hope Hibs get relegated so we can listen to the hun media talk up Scotlands 2nd tier as the only show in town.

You can be assured that if it were an incident involving Celtic fans abusing the manager of another club they would’ve been hung out to dry long, not to mention that it would’ve been reported in the media as Scotlands descent back into the 19th century.

  26. Worst I’ve heard from a manager recently was when Terry Butcher had been on the wrong end of some referee decisions at Inverness (a rarity in itself) and he was asked if he would be sharing a bottle of wine with the opposing manager after the game, and would he be appealing the red card or some such chaf.

Tel replied that if he had a bottle of wine he would take it down to the SFA HQ and he wouldn’t be sharing it but would be cracking some heads, or words to that effect.

He had just been fined/suspended previous to this and I expected a big suspension to come……………………….Nothing, not a squeak.

I could go on all night about the double standards which I have seen all my life but the most galling thing is that when the cheats were found out and went bust, and Dallas & Dougie went, I thought that the cheating and double standards would stop and we could enjoy a level playing field.

It’s worse and I dread to think what it will be like when thems come back up.

Are you actually questioning Leigh Griffiths commitment to Celtic because he went out & had a good time, watching the club he loves with his friends?

I’m not questioning Leigh Griffiths. I’m not his boss. I think Neil Lennon will now have a question he could do without.

What if we are playing hibs and the score is 0-1 and we get a penalty in the 89th minute ( I know it is a fantasy) and up to that point Leigh has been our penalty taker. Should he take it? Neil needs to decide based on the knowledge that Leigh supports Hibs.

Neil now has a decision to make knowing that Leigh is compromised. Which other of our first team players supports one of our competitors and openly displays their support?

HT other good examples seems to be one rule for knuckledraggers and another for the rest what will they do when uefa give them 2 entries on their website like Derry City or will the SFA have smoothed things over by then? What will our fanbase think if the “bored” credit them with a history from1872 will the lie be complete and complicit then?

Wayne Rooney has been known to attend Celtic games, he sat a few rows behind me at Ibrox some time ago.

That didn’t prevent him ripping the piss out of us by doing keepie uppies when they were 3-0 up in the CL game at Old Trafford. (Oh how I wanted Darren O’Dea to boot him right into the Main Stand!)

He’s a professional footballer, his fondness for Celtic, which stretches back to childhood, went out the window when he was plying his trade.

There’s no reason to doubt that LG would be any different.

The thought of Leigh’s passion for Hibs when we are playing against them crossed my mind.

I thought it strange that his wean was decked out in the Hoops at the post match celebrations, with Leigh clearly enjoying the occasion. Then for him to be at The Hibernian match as a fan.

Then again we have several posters on CQN with split loyalties too.
