Players grounded in their community

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

  1. Morning everybody,

Difficult not to agree with Kayal.

Thugs prosper here. How many skillful players have been affected by hun brutes? Refs allow it. No wonder, players from places like South America struggle here generally.

    I wish him well.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha ….. Brilliant

  3. Leigh Griffiths

There will be a clause in Leigh’s contract which stipulates that he must adhere to a Code of Conduct. If the club has fined him then, presumably, he has breached said Code. This is a matter between him and Celtic, nothing to do with the SFA.

When even Hertz fans have taken no offence, save to their musical sensibilities, the actions of the SFA are puzzling. Surely it isn’t an attempt to deflect attention from their Officials’ corruption in matters Sevco which are about to go mainstream, and at the same time unsettle a young Celt who has made a most promising return to Scottish football?

Celtic’s response has been measured, but firm, with no dog whistling. I’m content with that.

  4. After reading too many Independence comments on a Celtic site, I was groaning as SFTB asked for a list of statistics from yesteryear…..only to then enjoy the best line of the day: Oh! And could you post it somewhere else. :-)

    Well done, SFTB.

And you are very much entitled to yours bb.

Guff should be addressed and contested but nobody was on the subject till you had your wee child poverty rant.

The SNP, in a wave of publicity, introduced free school meals to children in P1-3. They were given great plaudits for doing so.

This was despite the fact that many of those children were either already in receipt of free meals or weren’t from a background which required them to have one.

Regardless, it was hailed as a positive move.

In my humble opinion it was a gimic. It was a high profile show without real substance.

Why not assess the needs and social circumstances of those children from P4 up to S6?

We now have a situation where many families who may have been on the cusp of receiving free meals are left in the same desperate position that they originally were.

Had the SNP been seeking to make a GENUINE difference they would taken this into account.

Oh and how has this been paid for?

The price of school meals for anyone above the age of 7 has been increased.

    No more from me mate.

I notice that you are pinning a lot of faith on Resolution 12,and being nearer to the action than I am,I trust you to be on the money.

IMO,the club know they have to take on and sort out the SFA. Sadly, they also know the vested interests and tangled relationships which are maintaining the status quo,and thus the difficulties which have to be overcome.

    Thing is,though.

Since the famous John Reid “those days are gone” comment-and how we cheered-they have really gone out of their way to give us a huge GIRUY at every opportunity.

Quite a few of which they have invented, btw!

I just hope that the board-who are infinitely more savvy than I-know what they are doing. Because from where I’m sitting,I’m about to get telt tae get tae the backathebus again….

    Anyway,that’s just me.

I can apologise if I’m in the wrong but if someone on this site accuses me of being a Cybernat or blaming Cybernats for all that ails this country, thats acceptable? But to accuse one who states that their intention is to vote for a unionist government a Unionist is considered an insult. I would appreciate an explanation on this, because I am at a loss on this one.

Re school meals. I accept your point but imho Labour voting against was absolutely appalling. As one brought up in Brigton and was a recipient of school meals many a time, the major drawbacks were the different coloured tickets and different queues at the dinner school. A horrible experience, and I personally know secondary school family’s today that are entitled to free meals but wont take them up because of the stigma.

I believe that is a real strong argument against segregation.

    HT,

    A few others too.

Or are you referring to the ice cube comment? ;)

I think you would be better served by reflection on the feedback.

You do not have to fight all the battles today.

    As for :-

“But to accuse one who states that their intention is to vote for a unionist government a Unionist is considered an insult. I would appreciate an explanation on this, because I am at a loss on this one.”

We are all Unionists. You favour a Union of the Scottish people within Scottish national/ geographic boundaries when some of those people would prefer to have other geographic boundaries.

Anyways, on to football. I see that John Herron has made the short list for Young POTY. He also filled in at right back against the Sevco u-20s. Would you play him there on Saturday?

I also see the goalie Leo Fasan made the list. I haven’t seen this boy yet, anybody know if he is ready for a first team shout? Anyone know whatever happened to Dominic Cervi?

  15. That’s bad news about the Barcelona transfer ban.

That’ll make them even more determined to hold on to wee Leo and Xavi, preventing them from fulfilling their boyhood dream of running out in the Green & White.

And Peter Lawell had the cheque book ready too.

Or should I have posted this yesterday?

  16. SfTB,

Cervi dropped out of straight society and started a Grateful Dead tribute band. He is currently fighting bad vibes which developed when rolling papers could not be sourced. You are welcome.

I did say hopefully that Res12 will succeed, the work which went in to Res12 to highlight the SFA and its president corruption in dealing with that club that died simultaneously clearly demonstrated what a difficult job Celtic have in dealing with an organisation which plumbs the depths of corruption to protect you deid club and its president, we all demand Celtic do something ! maybe lots of us should take a look at ourselves in true JFK fashion ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,

  18. School dinners

In the 60s, school dinners were:

    1st child in family; 1/-, 2nd child 11d; 3rd child 10d; 4th and others; free.

Those children from “poor” families also had free meals.

There was no stigma attached to being in receipt of free meals.

I am the eldest in my family and I remember thinking that the whole thing was very fair.
