Playing against Celtic, Fit and Proper moment ahead, crystal balls

1108

The second half last night will be remember for the fact that right back Mikael Lustig came within the width of the crossbar of scoring a hat-trick, while left back Emilio Izaguirre also hit the crossbar – and was caught offside in the centre forward position.  The movement and energy levels required for this type of performance cannot be overestimated.

Adam Matthews’ goal on Saturday, when he burst a lung to cover half the field and get on the end of a move as it developed on the opposite wing, is another example of how physically taxing playing for Celtic is right now.  And just as importantly, how taxing it is to play against them.

Motherwell competed as best they could before hitting the wall and capitulating.

Kano

I knew the minutes’ applause for Kano was coming last night, but it was a hard moment nonetheless. Sannabhoy read a letter at halftime from Martin’s wife, Carolyn, explaining the family’s appreciation for what the Celtic family did for them.

It’s appropriate for us to return our respect to Kano’s family, and to Sannabhoy and his Kano Foundation colleagues. They got the charity work ball rolling for so many of us. They gave us the opportunity to aspire to become better people.

There’s a link at the bottom of the article to sign-up for CQN11, where the work to build another school kitchen in Malawi goes on. You are part of an incredible community. Be there.

Just a brief note on Honest Dave King’s recent claims.  He will become a director of newco Rangers in the event the forthcoming EGM votes him so.  I’ve no doubt he will be able to find a NomAd to work with him, not all have the same standards, allowing the company to retain its listed status with him as a director.

It is also true that the SFA cannot stop him becoming a director.  They do not have a Fit and Proper test, they have fit and proper criteria, which directorial appointments are measured against after they are appointed.

Despite all we’ve seen in come out of Hampden over the last few years, I would be amazed if the SFA board approved a tax convict and former director of a club which broke tax law, player registration rules and went into liquidation.  It’s not even a remotely tenable suggestion.

After the event, the SFA would be in a position to penalise newco Rangers – most probably through a fine – and instruct them to dismiss King.  King, of course, has all the humility and self-awareness required to apologise and resign without a fuss.  There’s no way he would use his well-marshalled media campaign to try what Craig Whyte and Charles Green did before him – play to the gallery, blame all his ills on an ‘anti-Rangers’ conspiracy.

Note how the media campaign is rolling out King comment and press releases as definitive news, not subjective claims.  Note also that Easdale press releases are being covered by the media, but that pantomime-hate figure, Jack Irvine, is being attributed as the source.

Note that Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias are saying nothing.  They’re just going about their business.  You don’t need crystal balls to see how this one is going to end.

CQN11 St Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance is on Friday 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park. The focus of an excellent night’s entertainment will be funding the construction of a kitchen at Chibwata Primary School in Malawi, for Mary’s Meals.

So the £3 Mil set aside for JG + wages are hopefully available to RD to spend elsewhere. I liked JG bit if his heart is not in it to stay then it makes sense to spend our energy and budget on guys that want to play for us imo.

Peter Lawwell’s statement was a statement of intent, not a forlorn prayer of hope by an intrepid ‘forlorn fellow’, nor was it an articulation of a personal ambition either. He was talking in his capacity as CEO of Celtic PLC and may be the case that shares are traded on his informed words.

I can make a clear and easy distinction between personal domestic ambitions and work/professional ambitions.

I have no intention of humouring semantics over the definition of ‘aim’, perceived or otherwise, but there are plenty abroad that believe there was no substantial gain to the worth of Celtic as a club, nor additional value to the shares, following his (Peter’s) confident statement. In fact, there are plenty abroad that believe the diametrical was achieved following successive transfer windows which, many argue, rather than growing the club and enhancing the product on the field (possibly married to favourable results i.e. qualification into the champions league proper + loads of money) we instead shrunk as a club both in a footballing sense as well as a commercial sense. Some people use the pavement word ‘down-sizing’ as though that somehow justifies failure. There are many abroad who wonder why achieving the opposite of your stated aims, twinned with measureable failure, merits financial reward of any kind or count, bearing in mind that it is the coin from the pockets (in part) of many abroad that actually pays for those ‘failure managed’ bonuses.

Bottom line, why should people on limited budgets subsidise the lavish lifestyles of others who many can argue have failed in their duty and care? Why should they be pressured and held hostage to a tentative obligation to ‘the faith’?

  5. Right young Martin – what’s it going to be? You can earn 4 million a year and train with Ronaldo, Bale and co. or . . .

Come on, the boy was never coming here. All the top CL teams were after him. Fair play to RD for saying the following:

““He’s a special talent and I wish him all the best and all the luck he can get.

“I had him as a player and he made his debut at only 15 and he has the attitude to make it.

“It’s important that he settles down at first. He will train with the best players in the world every day.

“There will be high expectations but his attitude is unbelievable. He’s very mature and he trains more than anyone else.

“It’s exciting for him. I tried to convince him to come to Celtic but there were some tough choices for him.”

Hi big pal – I know we are on the same wavelength here – give the contracts to the young guys that want to join us and develop rather than the perceived finished article. LG and AS are my preferred strikers at the moment.

  9. With the usual tears in my eyes, I watched the Stan Testimonial DVD again. Still can’t believe the day at Celtic Park and the love all around. And the football wasn’t all bad either with some really classy touches from real classy players .I wonder if we will ever experience their likes again. I mean, we all rightly so go on about the Lions of Lisbon but that team with Larsson, Lubo, McNamara, Valgaaren, Sutton – -the list is endless was something special, well I think so anyway. Great days indeed. Such a pity that the previous team with Pierre, Jorge and wonder bhoy Paul McStay were not cheated the way they were.

History I hear you cry, yeah, history indeed!!

“There is big competition up front and it’s also about the opponents we meet but Leigh has made improvement in a lot of things. He looks sharper now and needs even more confidence.

“I believe in him. He’s a very exciting player and his left foot is world-class, I’ve not seen any player have a better left foot in my life.

“He has skills but again you have to perform over time when you play at Celtic.

“I wouldn’t play him if I wanted him to leave.

“We made some demands of him and he has really, really worked hard to tune into that. He still needs to improve, everybody does, but he is getting to a new level.

“You saw yesterday how much he works for the team, how sharp he is, and he scored a very nice goal as well. So he is going in the right direction.

“He has played the last two games and we have won the games and he has played well, so he has in a better position than three or four weeks ago.”

  16. Natknow,

I think the scatter gun approach to finding talent has been wasteful, less projects and we should have been watching better football.

  17. John Guidetti has not convinced he is anything other than a usefull addition to the squad.

Not a bad layer, but not a great player.Neither wonderfully skillfull or blessed with pace.

We know this because the club bought him on loan. We can now make an informed decision based on real life data.

What a thoroughly sensible way to do business.

The last bit of this made me smile:

“Mike Ashley confounded the City on Wednesday after Sports Direct announced that the tycoon had offloaded a majority stake in the retailer to a new entity.

In a highly unusual statement, Sports Direct said that Mash Holdings Limited, Mr Ashley’s investment vehicle, had disposed of a 50.71pc stake in the company worth almost £2.2bn – to Mash Beta Limited as a “gift”.

Mash Beta is a newly formed subsidiary of Mash Holdings and is therefore still owned by Mr Ashley. The remainder of Mr Ashley’s stake, which amounts to 4.43pc of Sports Direct, will continue to be owned directly by Mash Holdings.

The move will spark speculation that Mr Ashley is either planning a major deal or is trying to find ways to lower his tax bill.”

Peter Lawwell’s statement was a statement of intent

Yes but it was a statement of “I/we will try to…” not “I/we will do”

I have no intention of humouring semantics over the definition of ‘aim’

But you have and you have had to. It is important that words retain their meaning and are not stretched to make them have the same meaning as different words with different functions. If I want to promise you that I will do something, you may not be satisfied to hear me say the words “I’ll try and do that.” If you are a hard taskmaster you will want me to say “I will do that”, and you will not accept the possibility of failure contained within the word “try”. An aim is an aim; it is not a promise or vow.

rather than growing the club and enhancing the product on the field….we instead shrunk as a club both in a footballing sense as well as a commercial sense

True but that does not prove that it was an aim to do so rather than an historical inevitability that we had to draw our horns in and stay alive in an uncertain time of recession and marginalisation of diddy leagues like the SPFL. I have accepted that downsizing occurred; I am only disputing how much of that was a deliberate strategy and how much was enforced by forces of which we had to take account.

Some people use the pavement word ‘down-sizing’ as though that somehow justifies failure.

Maybe, but not me so I am not answerable there. In fact, I do not even accept the premise that this has been a period of financial failure.

Bottom line, why should people on limited budgets subsidise the lavish lifestyles of others who many can argue have failed in their duty and care? Why should they be pressured and held hostage to a tentative obligation to ‘the faith’?

I think that is the crux of the matter and people have and do reach different judgements on this. It is all well and good to protest the bonus culture within all boardrooms, including Celtic’s, and I’d join you in that protest, especially as we have no idea how those bonuses are earned. But it won’t change the transfer policy requirements one little bit.

If its faith that brings you to CP, then you will take a personal response to that faith and decide if it can be broken by such matters. For me, I will object to the bonus culture and to the treatment of our fans but I cannot get too exercised by the fact that we have made mistakes in the transfer market or that we do not have a Centre Forward for whom we spent large sums in transfer fee.

In fact, I am predicting that many more transfer mistakes will be made and I make that prediction based on the tenet that it has always been thus. Every manager in Celtic history has made them and every manager of every club in history has made them.

My decision to steer clear of the LC semi final has nothing to do with our spending policy.
