Playing with an eye on your next gig, bold use of Latin

845

I don’t like playing games when players have transfer or contract business swirling around the dressing room.  Give a team an excuse to underperform and they tend to grab it, so I expect a difficult challenge at Easter Road tomorrow.  If we want to maintain our unbeaten run and two month old clean sheet record we’ll need to bring our A game.

Neil Lennon’s comments at yesterday’s media conference, about potentially dropping players who plan to leave in the summer, point in this direction.  Few manage to perform with an eye on their next gig.

Well done to the new regime at Newco Rangers who used Latin in their stock market announcement yesterday.  There was no “ex-gratia” payment to resigning director, Brian Stockbridge, who instead had his contract paid up.

Paying Stockbridge in full is hardly a money saver but with him not around it will sweeten the medicine others will have to take and allow a fresh angle to be pitched to supporters at season ticket renewal time.  Let’s hope their manager sticks to his contractual guns.

Daily Record columnist, Chris Sutton, has today made the case for Neil Lennon to leave Celtic and move to England.  Nice one, Chris.  If you hand around long enough to get to see it all.

McCoist has inherited Walter Smith’s hold over the press. What’s their secret?

If only a Celtic manager were able to command the media with such a masterful hand.

  3. We may have heated debates, we may argue from time to time we are all CELTIC supporters and know where to draw the line.

    We show each other respect.

Contrast that with a story I’ve posted before on here in the context of Jimmy & Joe on Shorty.

I had an acquaintance many years ago, nice guy , had a pint with him occasionally , didn’t show much interest in football but his family were followers of Deidco .

Slowly , his interest grew like a lot of them in the Souness / Smith cheating years.

One evening he came into our local and rather excitedly told me he’d got a ticket for an upcoming game, his first, at the Bigotdome. He had secured a seat on an Edinburgh supporters bus and the guy he spoke to sounded like a decent guy.

Obviously , I counselled him against going to no avail with non stop stories of their bigotry and hatred if all things Tim but he couldn’t be swayed.

Anyway, cutting a long story short his first game at the asbestos dome ended in defeat .

Who did his fellow travellers blame for this ……. Him.

Newspapers stuffed up his backside and set alight, rather painful burns, a fortnight off work and blisters that meant he couldn’t sit down!!

    Yeah, he never went back.

Likes to see the Celtic do well these days!

  4. In 2003 Celtic attracted a TV audience across the UK of over 10 million for the Uefa Cup Final. This is over 3 million more than the audience achieved by Middlesbrough when they reached the final three years later.

  5. WC,

thats a pretty decent share of the TV audience and a very good comparison with Boro.

However i suppose we should ask how did we compare with the Liverpool v Alaves UEFA final? Given the popularity of Liverpool and being one of the “Big Clubs” down there.

    Any ideas?

Could it simply be that by and large, they are all in different minoges together?

  12. WC,

    thank you.

I’d say we hold up well enough in that given Liverpool’s appeal across whole of England, Wales and Norn Iron.

Was listening to 5live during the week and they were commentating on the lack of away crowds down there just now, Liverpool, Man Utd Newcastle apart. Somehow think we’d be joining that trio if we were down there.
