Points and £1.5m left on the table

335

It was a strange game.  Celtic were so far ahead in the opening 20 minutes it was hard to comprehend how Shakhtar Donetsk managed to win so impressively in Leipzig last week.  Our ‘hosts’ soon edged their way into proceedings, scored, and for the remainder of the first half, made Celtic look second best.

At halftime I suspect both teams would have settled for a point.  The second half was significantly less open than the first.  Shakhtar seldom threw men forward and Celtic cut down opportunities for a counterattack.

Had Shakhtar won, our chances of progressing in the competition would have been effectively wiped out.  A draw means we remain very much in control of our own destiny.  The disappointing aspect is, that a win, which should have been achieved, would have almost certainly guaranteed European football of one type after Christmas.

There is also the dirty little subject.  A win was worth £1.5m more than the draw; our potential income pot shrank a little in the Warsaw air.

It is remarkable how Greg Taylor has grown this season.  Repeatedly last night he dragged his body up and down the field, often accepting possession in tight spaces, before mining a way out.  The courage he showed in possession is enormously encouraging.

Sead Haksabanovic was thrown in for his first start; a brave decision by Ange Postecoglou.  The manager will feel justified as Sead played an important part in Celtic’s goal.  Still, Celtic steadied when Daizen Maeda replaced Sead at halftime.  He mitigated the risk from Shakhtar’s left flank; had he started, with Haksabanovic making a late cameo, Shakhtar would have found it more difficult to exploit the space they scored from.

Celtic improved again when Liel Abada replaced the exhausted Jota near the end.  Perhaps bringing Abada on 10 minutes earlier would have made a difference.

Shakhtar’s goal was a consequence of the gameplan, not just a misjudgement in midfield.  Callum McGregor tried to nick an opposition pass 40 yards from goal and missed.  He was out of position and the orange and black shirts snapped up a gear.  Celtic’s play is all about trying to nick a pass in midfield.  It works domestically, (remarkably) worked for a period against Real Madrid and was very effective during the opening 20 minutes last night.

This plan is also energy sapping.  At 25 minutes, the tank needed filled and we suffered until the break.  We need to manage our tempo more carefully.

Later, there was concern until Real opened the scoring on the 80th minute in Madrid.  That win may be just as important as Celtic’s point, come the end of the group.

  2. Let’s all do the huddle …could not agree more…think we have the classic Freudian slip and you will know them by their fruits here ….the word scum and Celtic fan(s) don’t compute …me thinks the author probably momentarily forgot he wasn’t down the Ludge !!

  3. Why didn’t they produce a banner in Gaelic or Polish or Ukrainian?

At least that would have got uefa and the mourning press gestapo thinking.

Don’t like Hearts at all but that was a decent result for them and Scottish football tonight.

Shame their positive impact on the coeff***** won’t get a mention.

That particular C-word was the talk of the town two weeks ago when a guy who calls himself King mentioned it.

More of a shame, IMHO, is us having yet another debate about minority fan behaviour drawing fines to the club (all of us).

Arrogant as it is ignorant unfortunately.

    Rebels without a completion date.

Thought-free lashing out at the establishment.

    Any establishment.

All safely behind the anonymity of “Celtic fans”.

If FTQ and all that is your thing then by all means go for it.

    It is a free country.

But it is not Celtic’s thing.

  6. Can I enquire are there any Edinburgh based CQN social gatherings for us Tim’s based on the East Coast ?

Sadly plenty of toddlers and coked up weekend plastic rebels looking stamp their brand on Celtics at the expense of the wider reputation.

    B78.

Come on B78 we have a problem so what do we do

    Young people?

Drugs? Massive issue- societal,it used to be the bottle in the sock ,

Fascistic wear.i am not a fan of myself.

They won’t stamp their brand anywhere near brand Celtic.

Your view and mines will always differ on what Celtic is or was,but that’s the energy that drives us,its Celtic, that’s the synergy.

To me I expect a fine.

now uefa came in for justified criticism for deeming matches to have no away fans so imo they will shut a section of the standing section

The digital history of who is in receipt of /part of away fans would be known …no?

    Could sanction there.

    Or

Do it over 2 or 3 games and ask the grouping to volunteer members for sanction.til the fine is met

Celtic supporters called the green brigades seats will be known and like my own/yours is subject to the modern day guillotine- the return key.of block/stop/pause or seat cancelled.

    ===================

Lots of ifs buts, etc bout goings on.it happened

In todays media it was primed and ready for Celtic to get a kicking,a kicking they were primed to get,as the troughs downer trough awfydooness to someone remote goes on and on.

If the brits are involved b78 it’ll be somebody gettin it,us,the Irish, the blacks,Indians,Pakistanis ,some other refugee, its an ongoing thing historically, but I guess there’s a bit of tension with the big kult changing to a new kult :-)

  8. Let me clarify for anyone that is in any doubt. The scum in our support that continue to further their political agenda, of which I am personally supportive (Republican – anti monarchy), have no right to punish Celtic FC to make their point.

Hopefully the scum in question are identified and banned from everything Celtic FC for life. Doubt the scum have a set of baws with enough conviction to march on the streets and make a difference. Too busy secluded somewhere, making up banners to punish Celtic FC.

  9. Jobo

    Thanks for collating the results.

I know that there were few outstanding performers and many players were good at one point and weak at other times.

However, only 2 votes for Maeda surprises me. I think, as part of a front 3 , he is marked down for failure to score, and he has missed big chances recently.

But, what I saw was our exposed right hand defence was immediately tightened when Maeda gave support to Jura in a way that Jota was not doing. Now, it was Ange’s decision that improved us but it was Daisen who provided the energy to implement Ange’s plan. I gave my 3rd vote to Daisen because he helped turn the game, even though he wasn’t very effective in helping us add another goal.

P.S.- I think we saw a variation in Angeball last night and few are talking about it. We did not do a high energy press for 60 or 70 minutes and then hang on. We adjusted to the very live threat of their counter attack by standing off more than usual, passing around the back to draw them out, and conserving energy so we continued to have the ability to dominate them for a longer period than usual.

Proof of the pudding will be the Leipzig ties. I know some don’t consider Leipzig as one of the stronger outfits we have faced but, in our European history we have face German opposition 25 times and won on only 4 occasions, losing 16 and with an overall goal deficit of -20.

However the good news is that we have a 50/50 record with Leipzig , though we are losing 2:3 on goals over our two matches

Sionnaigh – I hear your frustration and totally get your stance but, respectfully,

    … isn’t “scum” harsh?

More likely perhaps these are just misguided, ignorant, young men ?

  11. SFTB

In contrast to last year, where making a top 6 finish(think we made it) I think it’s one of the positives is the defence being firmly anchored with CCV settled and world Cup looming..Jens is sound so far maybe bit nervy at end but we are growing.jura was caught as poor pass to cal intercepted.

  12. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL

The misguided, ignorant, young men have been so….for too long now.

They’re cowardly scum hiding behind Celtic FC for a political cause they don’t have the courage to take to the streets.

Knowingly harming Celtic FC, in the cusp of a wave. The scum should be banned for life from everything Celtic FC.

Make an example of the cowardly filth that are guilty. That’ll put off any misguided youth tempted to follow their footsteps, unless it’s marchin on the streets banners proudly flown high.

  13. I don’t hide behind Celtic FC to make a political point, unlike the cowardly scum determined to punish Celtic FC.

  14. Sonnaigh

If you’re not sick enough yet of what damage Celtic’s touts can do, you’re about to find out.

Banners displaying disrespectful/hurtful slogans against the Unionist community are out.

One can be anti monarchy / pro Republican without having to rub Celtic in it. The last thing Republicanism needed this week was cowardly scum hiding behind Celtic FC to show disrespect towards their monarchy.

Let the monarchists grieve in peace ffs.

  16. The intemperate language to describe those who displayed the “banner” is not the way to win a debate that does require a change to happen, I agree with the sentiments expressed by Sinn Féin’s leadership below in the article, it is time for the tribalism language to be replaced by words of peace and reconciliation, Nelson Mandela knew the road to travel after being locked away for 25 years due to hatred and intolerance, time for the GB to focus on Celtic FC and its wonderful beautiful story

Sinn Féin’s decision to pay tribute to the Queen and meet King Charles III will “absolutely not” alienate Irish republicans, the party’s leader has said.

Speaking on Virgin Media’s Tonight programme, Mary Lou McDonald said she had “no truck with monarchy”.

But she added that the world had “moved on a lot”.

She said her party’s relationship with the monarchy had changed over the past 20 years.

“This shows, and I hope this gives confidence to people on the one hand to reaffirm just how far we’ve come, but also to demonstrate just how far much further we can go,” Ms McDonald said.

Ms McDonald said she was “more than happy” to acknowledge Queen Elizabeth II was “at times, a great champion of reconciliation”.

She described her past interactions with King Charles as “cordial, warm, and very direct”.

“And it is that a change? Yes, it is. Who would have thought 20 years ago, 10 years ago that that was possible,” she said.

Speaking in the Northern Ireland Assembly on Monday, Sinn Féin deputy leader Michelle O’Neill said the Queen was “a courageous and gracious leader”, while the party’s assembly Speaker Alex Maskey said she recognised how a “small but significant gesture can make a huge difference in changing attitudes”.

Ms McDonald also paid tribute to the Queen following a minute’s silence in the Dáil (lower house of Irish Parliament) on Wednesday.

When the Queen visited the Republic of Ireland in 2011 – as the first UK monarch to visit the independent state – Sinn Féin opposed the visit and declined invitations to take part.

However the next year on a visit to Belfast the Queen shook hands with the Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

Mr McGuinness was a former leader of the IRA, the organisation which assassinated Prince Philip’s uncle Lord Mountbatten in 1979.

Sinn Féin politicians have since met members of the Royal Family on several occasions.

  17. In addendum to my post above as a lifelong socialist republican who wishes for a Scottish republic first and foremost, I absolutely agree with the excellent Sinn Féin leaders’ views expressed in the article.

  18. Good luck Celtic FC explaining the intemperate language to UEFA on the banners.

LIONROARS67, thankfully you succinctly explained everything I tried to say, without being offensive.

  19. Have the Green Brigade claimed responsibility for the banner? I guess Celtic knew about the tifo depicting Paddy Coyle as the Green Brigade worked on it within Celtic park.I thought the tifo was superb and overtly political,Celtic didn’t seem to mind or were they hiding behind the Green Brigade.Calling Celtic fans scum is unacceptable.

  20. Good morning fholk – another fine day to be a Tim

    Jobo Baldie @ 10:57 pm,

It looks like my votes chimed with the majority. Interesting, no votes for Kyogo tells it’s own story I guess.

We really need to find away of using his audacious talent in these games, he fought hard in the box but if he is our #1 striker we need to play to his strengths.

Still, voting this week very different in some ways to the bould bhoys who regularly pick up points domestically yet there are regular contributiors who are showing they are true stand-outs of the Ange era.

    Hail Hail

  21. Looks like emotions running high on the GB banner, unsurprising really.

The time for bigotry is over, the establishment introduced it to divide and rule the Celtic parts of the British Isles.

By prolonging the bigotry the GB are playing straight into the hands of the British Establishment.

The Royal Family played a blinder in Scotland in the last week, given hauners by the Scottish Establishment and now given hauners by the Green Brigade.

Could the succession have gone any better in Scotland!?

    Hail Hail

  22. Good morning all from another lovely morning in the Garngad

Could it be Sinn Fein are playing to the crowd with the kind words for the Queen and monarchy.

I am sure if they came out and said good riddance she was head of a country that “plundered many nations and divided many lands” then the bad press would take years to overturn.

On the GB – Personally I think the GB banners/Tifo’s are brilliant and to the point.

    Free speech and all that.

    D :)

  23. Good to see Ivan Toney getting a call up for the English NT.

It really shows even in this day and age players develop and different rate.

Toney’s potential with Premier League level coaching and conditioning has really produced a first class striker for Brentford.

Shows there is still value in the English lower leagues. I’m intrigued to see what Tom Rogic does at WBA.

    Hail Hail

  24. I’ve backed the GB up many times against their detractors in my local 100% Celtic pub.

    This weekend I won’t.

Infiltrating huns could not have done a better job at getting the club’s name blackened. The banner will have gone worldwide. We all agree with the sentiment, the Crown’s sordid history the lot, but Celtic football club and its reputation are sacrosanct, to me anyway.

And while I’m at it, how in the name of God they can’t see the undoing of their great work, Tifos, food banks etc is beyond me. As someone earlier said, this was a display of immaturity and this time I won’t be surprised if the board take serious action. Using the slightest bit of imagination and forethought would have easily avoided the inevitable consequences.

Another own goal and again at a time when our enemy needs any positive it can grab.

  25. Hello again all you young rebels.

No banner bashing post from me, only banners i’m

interested in are the ones Paddy hangs proudly up in

    our CSC this weekend.

Lots of new members to meet and greet with a raptourous

    rendition of Celtic anthems 🇮🇪

    CONEYBHOY

Hope the support and kindness shown by all the good Tim’s

on here helps you reach a better place.

    H.H. Mick

  26. I wonder what it is UEFA are actually investigating, we are continually reminded that the”crown” is non political. Is it the word f*** that’s offensive ?

  27. Michael Fagan “attacked” the Queen…if that’s what you are suggesting Sionnaigh…never heard that one before.
