Post-match, Robinson was shoddy, calculated and worse than James Scott

614

Ryan Christie’s pitched cross for Scott Sinclair to open the scoring with a volley was a thing of beauty.  It was 30 minutes into the game and Motherwell were withstanding everything Celtic could muster; it was going to take something special to open them up.  Sinclair’s finish was accomplished.

Ewan Henderson, on his first start in senior football, created space on the right wing to send a ball onto the forehead of Odsonne Eduard for the French striker to score his first of the day.  His second, which arrived on 88 minutes, but was just as crucial, was a thundering free kick from 26 yards, which clipped the underside of the bar on its way in.

You wait weeks for a great goal then you get four in one afternoon.  James Forrest darted into the box before sliding the ball into the path of Oliver Burke, who finished in the top corner.

So good for Celtic, but the story of this game runs a little deeper.  As though our central mid problems were not significant enough, Ryan Christie collapsed injured, prompting Kris Ajer to knock the ball out of play.  But, also making his first start in senior football was Motherwell’s 18-year-old striker, James Scott.

Scott collected the subsequent uncontested throw-in, which convention dictated would be returned to Celtic, but the teenager ran into the empty Celtic half and fired a shot at Scott Bain.  The Celtic keeper saved, but Scott had an accomplice in the form of 24-year-old Gboly Ariyibi, who scored with the rebound.

At this point, the game needed someone of character to make the right decision.  Unfortunately, this proverbial football fell at the feet of Motherwell manager, Steve Robinson.  He just “didn’t know what to do”.  Motherwell accepted the advantage their break with acceptable standards provided them with, without recourse.

I get teenagers make worse mistakes than this, although we should be clear, he has played the game all his life and will be more familiar with this scenario than you or I.  I could also understand that Robinson was caught like a rabbit in the disco lights, but then the Motherwell manager tried to throw Celtic fans under the bus in a clear case of whataboutery in his post-match interview, by accusing them of celebrating the departure of injured Carl McHugh.  Robinson has already told the radio audience McHugh has been knocked unconscious for the fourth time in his career.

This context was unavailable to Celtic fans during the game.  The context of Robinson’s comments were crystal clear.  It was shoddy, calculated and therefore worse than James Scott’s earlier transgression.

If you like football of the blood and snotters variety, the remaining 39 minutes, plus 9 minutes added-time, were right up your street.  The goal upset Celtic’s hold on the game and until Edouard’s late strike, Motherwell controlled the game.  But, the champions had enough and finished the visitors off in distinguished fashion.

  1. Macjay, I simply don’t follow your logic. At one level you are saying one of your prime motives for a no deal Brexit is that presents a unique opportunity for a United Ireland, However that scenario would only come into play if Brexit was a disaster for the UK & the majority in the Wee 6 saw they were better off joining the Republic in the EU.

At the same time you appear ultra confident that the UK will flourish post Brexit.

If you are for one moment suggesting that we should quit the EU & trust Mother England to look after us, then you are having a giraffe, We have had 800 years of Mother England looking after us, so thank you but no thanks.

  2. If/when Brendan leaves it will be as significant as the day when the blessed MON and Henrik left or the Maestro had to retire and everybit as sad. Absolutely gutted at the prospect. Don’t see the funny side or the need to joke about it but each to their own.

I realise not everyone here will feel the same and there were some posts here questioning Brendan and his suitability as the guy to lead us going forward at the start of the season .

Hoping it’s not true but fearing the worst taking into account Catman’s earlier posts.

  3. Posters wondering why BR would move from Celtic to Leicester?

    No Peter Lawell at Leicester.

Surprised we haven’t had SFTB post that if he does go,its nothing to do with Peter. He’s been filtering little bits in to his posts in anticipation.

Anyone who thinks its nothing to do with our CEO is crazy imo.

Catman, appreciate any info you hear, makes this a more balanced blog and not just propaganda.

I got shot as the messenger when i said the players had taken the huff with Ronny and basically downed tools after a bust up.

The season we then finished bottom of the Europa, events vindicated my posts, i only posted because i was certain, i heard directly from a championship manager who had acquired 2 Loan players from Celtic that day.

    A misunderstanding.

The EC , as currently constituted , is finished imho.

As a concept admirable. In reality , the inhabitants of EC countries wish to retain their national identities .

Schengen has removed EC borders , which was all well and good until Merkel`s disastrous invitation welcoming populations outside the EC to migrate to the EC.

Millions took her invitation at her word and continue to do so .

An Irishman can surely see the analogy with the Ulster plantation , the consequences of which remain to this day .

The open border between Ireland and N.I. is not my prime motivation. It could however , be a delicious spin off . Apparently all three principle parties wish to retain an open border which would imho come to pass in the event of no deal .

I have huge confidence that UK ( NB NOT mother England ) will , after an initial shock , survive and prosper in that event. The fifth largest global economy is not going to fall apart.

Germany will still wish to send its Mercs and Beamers and Volksies to the Uk.

    Et al,et al .

UK will be fine . We have faced far greater survival challenges in the past .

Harbingers of doom, and messengers of bad news have been treated much worser than what CATMAN has, some of them got even got deballed before they got shot. ?

  8. The survival challenges you speak of I assume you would contend were inflicted on ye this one should it come to pass will be self inflicted. Part of me would like a no deal Brexit as I feel it represents the best opportunity for Scottish Independence & the break up of your precious Union.

However it ain’t gonna happen. The overwhelming majority of your M.P.s obviously don’t share your confidence.

As I say either your hero Rees Mogg the Right Honourable Member Representing of the 18th Century & his cohorts will have to do an about turn & support May’s Bill or Article 50 will be extended and we will be in a new ball game.

Anyways I am much more concerned about the rumors about Brendan, also unlike you this is past my bedtime so I’m signing off for the night.

    I hope BR stays.

If he ditches us at this point in the season, I will not be wishing him well in his new post.

It will be “anyone but Leicester” for me when I look at the ep! results.

  10. Don’t even know if I would repeat some of

    The Commons votes.

    We shall see.

Corbyn`s long awaited ( after two and a half years ) intervention on Brexit is all about pandering to his recalcitrants in a fruitless attempt to save his own job .

    All hiss and wind.

Classic example of Party before Country .

“Anyone who thinks its nothing to do with our CEO is crazy imo.”

    Totally agree.

And anyone who thinks BR leaving is all down to push factors from the Celtic/Scottish side and nothing to do with pull factors from England or abroad is equally certifiable.

Thankfully, neither of us fits into either simplistic grouping.

  15. OK I’m a fan and recognize that I may wear green tinted products from Specsavers.

Brendan is on the brink of being unsackable as he stands on the brink of an unprecedented treble treble.

Why would he trade the certainty of developing a young team following his tactical and development philosophies for the risky necessity of success in the EPL? And with Leicester? A city known only for its shoes and which no one could find without the aid of GPS and a man on a AAA motor bike.

Brendan well knows the vagaries of management in the most over hyped leagues in Europe. He probably have mixed memories of Reading, Swansea or Liverpool, while his tenure at Celtic has seen his stature and prestige inexorably rise.

Some opinions, on here notably, think he would move solely to escape the influence of the CEO. Would he be given free rein over signings, budget and player contracts at any other club?

Would he escape the influence of fickle shareholders, board members and owners demanding instant success against teams with far bigger budgets and more resources?

He knows the score at CP and has known it prior to his appointment. He appreciates the financial constraints and the frustrations that accompany them.

He has been able to work successfully within these constraints, and achieve what he professes to be his first love, develop young academy level players and see them competing at the highest levels.

Brendan has one remaining challenge, to take a side he has built into the knock out stages of the Champions League.

Ask yourself. “Will he get that chance at Leicester?”

  16. We’re talking like Brendan Rodgers isn’t in the room? If he goes so be it. “I’m no Fenian”, Steve Clarke fits the build. Modest to boot ;-)

  17. Macjay, what would you know about collective “party” politics, being such a committed individual to neo fascist ideology?

You know nothing about the strength of leadership based upon the groundswell of socialist membership support Corbyn echoes.

You shout from the top. The workers shout to the top.

  18. Has Steve Clarke unwittingly hastened the departure of BR.

I sincerely hope not, but highlighting the dinosaurs who are so prevailent in our society may influence any top class manager’s thought process.

  19. Good morning CQN from a still mild Garngad

Have we got a few big games this week???

Is that how the smsm are ramping up the Leicester interest in BR??

Are they trying to upset our smooth running apple cart??

Also if BR has a contract, then surely Leicester would have to ask the club for permission to speak to him, and if the club say, you can but at the end of the season… Job done.

Otherwise is it not tapping up, just like a player???

    Anyway, bring on the Herts.
