Post-match, Robinson was shoddy, calculated and worse than James Scott

614

Ryan Christie’s pitched cross for Scott Sinclair to open the scoring with a volley was a thing of beauty.  It was 30 minutes into the game and Motherwell were withstanding everything Celtic could muster; it was going to take something special to open them up.  Sinclair’s finish was accomplished.

Ewan Henderson, on his first start in senior football, created space on the right wing to send a ball onto the forehead of Odsonne Eduard for the French striker to score his first of the day.  His second, which arrived on 88 minutes, but was just as crucial, was a thundering free kick from 26 yards, which clipped the underside of the bar on its way in.

You wait weeks for a great goal then you get four in one afternoon.  James Forrest darted into the box before sliding the ball into the path of Oliver Burke, who finished in the top corner.

So good for Celtic, but the story of this game runs a little deeper.  As though our central mid problems were not significant enough, Ryan Christie collapsed injured, prompting Kris Ajer to knock the ball out of play.  But, also making his first start in senior football was Motherwell’s 18-year-old striker, James Scott.

Scott collected the subsequent uncontested throw-in, which convention dictated would be returned to Celtic, but the teenager ran into the empty Celtic half and fired a shot at Scott Bain.  The Celtic keeper saved, but Scott had an accomplice in the form of 24-year-old Gboly Ariyibi, who scored with the rebound.

At this point, the game needed someone of character to make the right decision.  Unfortunately, this proverbial football fell at the feet of Motherwell manager, Steve Robinson.  He just “didn’t know what to do”.  Motherwell accepted the advantage their break with acceptable standards provided them with, without recourse.

I get teenagers make worse mistakes than this, although we should be clear, he has played the game all his life and will be more familiar with this scenario than you or I.  I could also understand that Robinson was caught like a rabbit in the disco lights, but then the Motherwell manager tried to throw Celtic fans under the bus in a clear case of whataboutery in his post-match interview, by accusing them of celebrating the departure of injured Carl McHugh.  Robinson has already told the radio audience McHugh has been knocked unconscious for the fourth time in his career.

This context was unavailable to Celtic fans during the game.  The context of Robinson’s comments were crystal clear.  It was shoddy, calculated and therefore worse than James Scott’s earlier transgression.

If you like football of the blood and snotters variety, the remaining 39 minutes, plus 9 minutes added-time, were right up your street.  The goal upset Celtic’s hold on the game and until Edouard’s late strike, Motherwell controlled the game.  But, the champions had enough and finished the visitors off in distinguished fashion.

  1. Looks like Jeremy is coming off the fence. A few weeks ago after May lost her deal vote in Parliament. Macjay announced the score as UK 1 EU 0. Wonder what the score is now.

  2. Hello again all you young rebels.

Good morning from another expected very hot day here in Melbourne.

Not read fully back yet but Brendan to Leicester? surely not.

I’ve no doubt he’s disgusted with the corruption in Scuddish fitba but i

would think his desire to gain godlike status and achieve the 10 would

override any notions to move to a mid table EPL team.

    Maybe i’m worrying too much.

    Away to read back.

I agree, the Motherwell left winger a decent player.

He also scored that goal !!!

  6. I know we all seem to love wur new rightback Jerry T – neat player mosta the time – but does anyone else think if Senor Gamboa or Tony R were as easily turned in the last few games – causing bookings et al – BR mighta drapped him already?

I think Tony and Christian have had rough deal in that regard. HH

PS MM; only 24 today mate; poifect!

  7. The Right back is an impressive athlete and very positive in attack. Positionally naive in defence.

While PC Lustig now (has to) give up too much space as his pace declines, this lad is prone to either being too close and being rolled or letting his guy in behind him.

Agree, thought the Motherwell winger looked good.

  8. What is the Stars on

Has Toljan been officially appointed as team scapegoat.

Fair play to Brendan Rodgers, his last significant act as a Celtic manager will be to sort out the gaping hole in our team….Scapegoat, most important player in any team, and we haven’t really had one since Brendan arrived

  9. Does anybody else not think that Broony signing his deal last month was an indication that BR was sticking around? Same with CalMac and the others who signed on. Obviously BR can’t come out and say I am here for 10 IAR but all he has to do is refute the rumours (to a certain extent he has). He’s a supporter so knows how we work and what we go through, all he has to do is ask his close family for advice on the current feeling amongst us. It would really give us the impetuous to push on for the league and galvanise everyone. We need no distractions at this stage

  10. Not really WITS, just an attempt to offer some objective thoughts on what kinda player we’re looking at.

  11. The oddschecker 2/7 on our manager becoming next leicester boss is beyond alarming tonight!.,,,p.s Does anyone know how I go about getting a ‘referal’ to join the huddleboard forum?…Still love this place but always like more options.

  12. What is the Stars on

Betting markets on managerial appointments can be off the wall.I wouldn’t be in the least concerned about it

    Wits,

Wasn’t aware of any mass condemnation of him on here, just no impressed. Perhaps he’ll improve with more game time

  14. Good morning QAUDRO.

Not liking what i’m reading regards Brendan but regardless what

    happens Celtic will live on.

Tony is injured and will still be a future Celtic star imo, Christian

has had his chance and not taken it.

Jeremy is new to the club, still settling in but as you said ” a neat

and tidy player ” and even the best fullbacks have had their own

bogeyman ( Danny McGrain/Arthur Graham ) think BR will stick

with him, thats if BR sticks with us.

    H.H Mick

  15. Brendans definitely away.

He went round the stadium waving cheerio to everybody after the game yesterday.

    Did ye no see him?

Who’s driving to the airport to pick up his successor – Neil McCann.

    You heard it here first!

  16. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Read on here only 8 games to secure the title, at the rate the games are coming that’s about five weeks. I expect BR would like to walk away with the treble treble.

One thought worries me though, will BR take our best players with him, I expect we have a fair few who would have no problem fitting into the epl, I expect a fair few would like to follow him down south and I’ve no doubt the Plc would cream their pants at the prospect of all the lovely money they could bank for a rainy day.

It is shocking if, as is being confirmed here, if there was a celebration from the Green Brigade as Carl McHugh was being stretchered off yesterday.

‘If you know the history’ Is a Celtic mantra. Remember John Thomson? What would it have been like if the last thing he heard was part of the crowd celebrating his predicament.

    =====================================================================

    They did .

Rangers captain , Davie Meiklejohn , went over and gestured for them to stop .

    ======================================================================================

Born in Govan, Glasgow, Meiklejohn joined Rangers from junior club Maryhill in 1919 and spent the rest of his playing days with the Ibrox club.

He played 563 games, scoring 46 goals and winning 12 Scottish league championships and five Scottish Cups. On 5 September 1931, he captained the Rangers side in the Old Firm game which saw the Celtic goalkeeper John Thomson accidentally killed contesting for a ball with Rangers’ Sam English. Meiklejohn was credited with having realised the seriousness of the situation and gestured to calm the home support whilst the injured Thomson was being attended to.

He was capped 15 times by Scotland during an 11-year international career. He also scored 3 times and captained the side six times. He made his debut against Wales. Meiklejohn also represented the Scottish League XI six times.[1]

Meiklejohn retired from football in 1936 and took a job with the Daily Record newspaper. In 1947 he became manager of Partick Thistle.

He collapsed and died, aged 58, in the director’s box at Broomfield Park, home of Airdrieonians. On 15 November 2009 he was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.[2]

  18. MM

I agree re Tony R – champ with a lionheart.

I remember CG singlehandedly pulling us out a tight game v Thistle – but he was condemned by one PSG game.

I still think he’ll play real well in another team, and he goes with our blessings.

And re bookies and BR; its the bookies PR people who seed these rumours in the press causing punters to splash their cash on IN/OUT rumours. Bookies deploy PR and meeja perhaps more adeptly than politicians.
