Pot 4, decline of the Spanish empire

1020

A cursory look at our fellow pot 4 Champions League teams shows the extent of the challenge.  Six of the eight teams lost: Steaua Bucharest (3-0), Austrian Vienna (0-1), Celtic (2-0), Real Sociedad (0-2), Plzen (0-3), Anderlecht (2-0).

Copenhagen got one of the better results of the night, a 1-1 draw at home to Italian champions, Juventus, while Napoli, who split Juve and Milan in the Italian league last season, but are still a pot 4 team, recorded the only bottom tier win, a 2-1 victory over last season’s finalists, Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli are in a different category than the rest but Celtic are in with a decent chance of out-performing others from pot 4.

Sociedad’s home reversal to Shakhter Donetsk, who are going through a rebuilding process was a shock, but Valencia’s 0-3 Europa League defeat to Swansea indicates a worrying scenario for Spanish football below the uber-indebted Barca and Real Madrid.  As a general rule, anything which undermines one of the economically powerful football nations should be welcomed by those disenfranchised by the size of their TV market (that’s us).

Shakhtar Karagandy put in a credible performance before going down 2-1 in Greece, a far better showing than Elfsborg’s 4-0 collapse in Salzburg.  Best of luck to the Kazaks.

I’ve been going to the football long enough to remember black players being booed whenever they touched the ball.  The phenomenon seemed to arrive here in the late 70s and faded around a decade later, although such is human nature I don’t think complacency is appropriate.  Homophobia is a different matter.

‘Out’ gay footballers are so rare I don’t know what the reaction would be at a match but the crowd-bullying phenomenon which can exist in the game makes any minority vulnerable.  The first step is to explain to the hard-of-thinking what they are doing, and the error of their ways.

Can rainbow coloured laces change the world?  Stonewall have distributed rainbow coloured laces to every player in the UK, asking them to wear them this weekend.  We’ll not see the WAGs acronym become WAGSABAH overnight but it feels like an appropriate, colourful, first step.

Keep reaching for that rainbow, Celtic.

  1. Little Bruce and Jenny are only 12 years old,

But they know they are in love. One day they decide that they want to get married, so Bruce goes to Jenny’s father to ask him for her hand.

Bruce bravely walks up to him and says,

“Mr. Smith, me and Jenny are in love and I want to ask you for her hand in marriage.”

Thinking that this was just the cutest thing, Mr. Smith replies, “Well Bruce, you are only 12. Where will you two live?”

Without even taking a moment to think about it, Bruce replies, “In Jenny’s room. It’s bigger than mine and we can both fit there nicely.”

Mr. Smith says with a huge grin, “Okay, then how will you live? You’re not old enough to get a job. You’ll need to support Jenny.”

Again, Bruce instantly replies, “Our allowance, Jenny makes five quid a week. And I make 10 quid a week. That’s about 60 quid a month, So that should do us just fine.”

Mr. Smith is impressed Bruce has put so much thought into this. “Well Bruce, It seems like you have everything figured out. I just have one more question. What will you do if the two of you should have little children of your own?”

Bruce just shrugs his shoulders and says, “Well, we’ve been lucky so far.”

Nobody tells me anything since I unfollowed you know who on Twitter.

I assumed that since I hadn’t seen you and Graham Spiers exchanging billets doux in a fortnight that you were off already.

That’ll be me off the prayer list again.

Seen you were looking for young driver insurance.

You should try Co-op young driver insurance – they put a tracker in the car to monitor speed etc but if he scores well – you get quaterly refunds – I used this for my boy when he was 17.

Also add as many experienced drivers as you can (even if their not going to use the car) that brings the cost down too.

Once he gets a years no claims insurance starts to become realistic and you can go for multi car policy

    Hope this helps

  4. Thought Virgil’s keepy up and pass to retain possesion half way through the first half in the San Siro was world class football.

I see your thought on the young bhoys regards experience and I am sure the great JS saw the same wisdom in your thinking .

Although Jock worked in a more competitive domestic set up than NL at the moment so I could see his idea of setting these bhoys into strong Scottish league sides .

I just think that rather than loaning these young prospects out to other SPL clubs for experience the way we find ourselves at the moment we could have fielded the bhoys ourselves .

IMO football now could not be further than all the founders of every club could ever envisage at this moment and something has got to give otherwise the players in the future will be playing in empty venues and supporters or fans (as supporters contribute to their club ,where as fans just keep an eye on the result ) will watch it on TV with a canned crowd

  7. The point has often been made that the club don’t want thems back.

It would be financial suicide to have them back IMO.

We have a clear run at CL football for the forseeable, and I fully understand that they will take some time to challenge us, but why take the risk ?

A risk for a couple of mill a year, or CL riches, you decide.

Kill them off, expose the sfa and their corruption, stop them in their tracks, feck the OF.

Problem for me, I can’t see the board fighting our corner re the corruption.

I understand that QoS would have had a fair chance the other night, had they had an honest referee, with the help of honest mistakes, they will challenge us for the league, anyone who deny’s that are deluding themselfs.

Match fixing, the sfa have it down to a T, well placed complient refs, ignoring the rules, etc, etc.

    Apathy rules the day.

Not being that musically minded my mate(who is) has decided I need something called a “PROG-ROCK education update” so he is taking me to the ferry to see a band called Mostly Autumn next week.

    anyone heard them?

  11. Thanking those who agree with me its very flattering :)………its fascinating to watch though how we group in clusters that agree with each others postings and thoughts. Really.

To answer a couple of the non consenters……….all this in IMO of course!

Elliot had a playing career that was superior to Stubbs including Pisa in Seri A. We even moved him on for a 1.5M profit at the time. Take Stubb’s long ball from the equation and he was very ordinary and was never worth the 4M we paid at the time.

Puuki has played 1.20 games for Celtic and has scored already. He played in a far superior League than ours and scored against better opposition. He has scored against Spain in a competitive world cup game (sans Barcelona).

His movement off the ball is very clever and he created Stokes free kick from nothing except his football intelligence. He will nail 20 goals+ every season plus the other assists he will bring. There is big things to come from this guy I believe and he will score game changing goals in the CL this season I’m sure.

Hooper scored goals. No goals meant no other contribution in his game. Out with his Spartak goal he never delivered at the top table.

Any CF at Celtic should get at least 20 league goals per season or he is not delivering. In which case Hooper was doing as expected and no more. He was brought to score goals when Scottish football was operating a different paradigm. His time has gone as is he……..

Last years team was 3-4 years in the making…….this new team will eclipse their achievements if not this year then certainly next year.

    So………

    Djik……….first choice pick

    Bitton…….first choice pick

    Pukki…….first choice pick

    Derk……..big game impact player (maybe)

Last years Celtic was at the top of its curve……..This years Celtic have yet to gel and almost succeeded with AC Milan.

They have much more raw potential than the last team.

We dine at the big table now and we are not going away anytime soon. The other best 31 teams in Europe understand this. We are part of the European circuit now.

We may not burst on to the Euro stage like the Lions but every year is an improvement. As for not having real competition since the demise of the orcs…….

There appears a direct correlation to our European success vis a vis their absence which I don’t think is coincidence. Its just Darwin’s Theory of Evolution in action.

Scotland was never large enough for 2 big clubs anyway :)

    TET

You and I agree regards honest mistakes and their frequency of occurring in favour of a dead club now their tribute act .

What you are missing IMO is that unless we Celtic fc the club can escape Scottish football as a league set up we are STUCK with it .

As I said before if our board were only interested in CASH they would have explored every opportunity and more to free us and them from Scottish football and believe you me they would have .

What you have to get your head around is that the tail is now wagging the dog and it will be till Europe wise up .

Change is over the horizon IMO and as far as we are concerned it does not involve any tribute act from Govan .

Here is a serious question to all Celtic Bhoys ‘n Ghirls if Sevco 2012 ever comes up as an opponent will you personally treat them as a 2nd tier new club or will you see them as an old rival ,bearing in mind we have never faced them before .

It was the bile and hatred that was part of the deal that most didn’t like, the cheating didn’t help, but it allowed the media great scope, hence the paranoia tag.

The past couple of seasons have been amazing, the stress has gone, we are no longer compiling lists of thems getting favourable decisions, and their opps getting shafted, that has to be a major plus.

They will be back at some point, worse than ever, wanting to put the boot in to everyone, especially us, and their complient referees will oblige.

Do you really want to return to that ?…seriously.
