Pot 4, decline of the Spanish empire

1020

A cursory look at our fellow pot 4 Champions League teams shows the extent of the challenge.  Six of the eight teams lost: Steaua Bucharest (3-0), Austrian Vienna (0-1), Celtic (2-0), Real Sociedad (0-2), Plzen (0-3), Anderlecht (2-0).

Copenhagen got one of the better results of the night, a 1-1 draw at home to Italian champions, Juventus, while Napoli, who split Juve and Milan in the Italian league last season, but are still a pot 4 team, recorded the only bottom tier win, a 2-1 victory over last season’s finalists, Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli are in a different category than the rest but Celtic are in with a decent chance of out-performing others from pot 4.

Sociedad’s home reversal to Shakhter Donetsk, who are going through a rebuilding process was a shock, but Valencia’s 0-3 Europa League defeat to Swansea indicates a worrying scenario for Spanish football below the uber-indebted Barca and Real Madrid.  As a general rule, anything which undermines one of the economically powerful football nations should be welcomed by those disenfranchised by the size of their TV market (that’s us).

Shakhtar Karagandy put in a credible performance before going down 2-1 in Greece, a far better showing than Elfsborg’s 4-0 collapse in Salzburg.  Best of luck to the Kazaks.

I’ve been going to the football long enough to remember black players being booed whenever they touched the ball.  The phenomenon seemed to arrive here in the late 70s and faded around a decade later, although such is human nature I don’t think complacency is appropriate.  Homophobia is a different matter.

‘Out’ gay footballers are so rare I don’t know what the reaction would be at a match but the crowd-bullying phenomenon which can exist in the game makes any minority vulnerable.  The first step is to explain to the hard-of-thinking what they are doing, and the error of their ways.

Can rainbow coloured laces change the world?  Stonewall have distributed rainbow coloured laces to every player in the UK, asking them to wear them this weekend.  We’ll not see the WAGs acronym become WAGSABAH overnight but it feels like an appropriate, colourful, first step.

Keep reaching for that rainbow, Celtic.

I remember the Cult gig but was not allowed oot to see it. Some pals went tithe Pogues that year and said they met Shane in the KPT beforehand and he was throwing up before the gig.

My first Palace gig was the Housemartins, pretty tame but I loved them.

Its in the Hun DNA. They’ll be back madder and badder, out to blame and pay back every SPL club and supporters for putting them down ( as they choose to see it).

When you see what McCoist gets away with, be prepared for some really vengeful stuff from their notorious followers. I would love PL to warn them that any damage to CP will mean a future ban. Then again I’m hoping the tribute act cant afford to keep gigging and go under anyway.

That would save the whole country a load of grief. The longer they traipse around grounds with scrapyards behind one goal and a burger caravan behind the other, all the better.

In the meantime life’s just wonderful without them.

As you say it will bring riches we could only dream of ,but it will bring riches only the suits could dream of .

That is why I don’t get people still giving the board a hard time just now ,if we all look at the league we are in and the financial deals we have compared to the other clubs in Europe ,I just don’t see what it will take to please some fans .

I, as you know am a happy clapper and as such I hope for the best whilst dreading the worst .Believe me being a happy clapper ain’t no fun .

I must say I am of the mind to go right back to basics and forget the riches and inevitable corruption involved and get back to our roots ,will that ideal see 60,000 supporters paying £200 for a ST to see the bhoys try their best ,who knows and would 60,000 paying £200 be enough .

Have any of you guy’s been moved out of your seats for the CL games because of the eufa seat fiasco? I’ve phoned the ticket office four times in the last week to see if they’ve handed the seats back but my seats are still allocated to them.

Once they decide they don’t want them what happens to those seats? to they go on general sale or sit empty on the night of the game?

All depends on what is happening, I change like the weather, it’s allowed.

I am happy when we are playing good and winning, I am not when we just accept the corruption, and we are the ones who are getting shafted more that any other club.

I have no idea what the suits are doing, same as most of us, we can only guess.

Transparency would be a good thing, but I doubt that will happen.

If PL does anything during his tenure at the sfa, sorting the referees would be my wish.

  12. My favourite from Brendan Behan was from The Borstal Boy when there was a bit of slagging going on between the R.Cs and the Prods about the merits of their respective religions. Brendan standing up for the R.Cs quoted a poem reputed to have been made up by an Irish Monk around the time of the Reformation. It translated like this

“Don’t speak of your alien Minister,

Of your Church without reason or faith.

For the foundation stone of its temple

Up like a bird, the reason I’m asking is that this happens to me for every European game. I usually get a letter after the first game offering me the chance to take my seat back, which is too late.

If those seat go back on sale it’s worth keeping in touch with the T.O. and trying to get one. When I’ve talked to T.O. workers they tell me that eufa never take the reserved seats so hundreds are either sold on or sit empty.

On Brendan Behan: I decided to read every word he ever wrote when I was a teenager even his unfinished stuff.

Now there is a subject worthy of a wee story.

There is a great interview with him in New York after he had been on the wagon.

He had caused some controversy on his last visit, and so the inteviewer asked him what were the chances of him coming off the wagon whilst in the big apple.

” What are the chances? ” asked Brendan “Every Feckin Chance!” was his own reply.

  27. Aulheid:

“I think” “Might”. “Perhaps”. “Maybe”. “I think”.

A pro-board in support of cheating hypothesis, as is your prerogative.

I think too mate, silence in adversity demands thinking.

I can think all I want, just like you too can think all you want, but we can think both ourselves to the grave and I think neither of us will pull the final curtain any the wiser.

So, I don’t only think, I wonder. I wonder just how much commercial Celtic are prepared to whore the support. Maybe the answer to that is ‘not one single iota’, and that would be grand. It would be grander too if Celtic were populated by men of virtue, morals and courage, who didn’t lip service their convictions but instead unequivocally communicated their moral stance to their customers.

If there are any of their customers who care.

As I said mate, I think too, maybe I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed but I learned early in life that you don’t have to open your mouth and speak to be able to tell lies.

Sometimes silence can be the biggest lie of them all. But then I don’t ‘know’ whether that is the case here or not; and neither do you.

  28. ACGR Supporting BMCUWP's Hootenannay, 28th Sept in Fun City on

Up like a bird, I would call the ticket office and ask about the eufa allocation seats. I’ve never had my own seat back so either it’s sold to someone else or it’s vacan, which would be a crying shame.
