Practice penalties, de Vries

472

And then the lights came back on.

You and I have discussed this before, but one week from tomorrow Celtic could be in involved in a +£20m penalty kick competition. Between now and then I’d have the players take 100 each. Preparation is everything and there’s no amount of preparation for penalties next week which will be too much.

You have to suspect that it’s too soon for Brendan Rodgers to throw new keeper, Dorus de Vries, into such a critical game, without a proper opportunity to work with his defenders, or be assessed by Stevie Woods.

After the Aberdeen game later this month we have a two week international break, where de Vries will be able to work with the coaching staff for an extended period, but that precedes the group stages of European competition, so I’m not sure when the new keeper will get a first team break.

Well respected French football magazine So Foot have compiled a list of what they think are the top ten supporters bases in world football. It’s a different list and doesn’t contain some of names which perhaps would be expected, but Celtic do well to come third and are the only British club in the list.

Not one Premier League side makes the top ten and it could be that So Foot thinks fans south of the border have become too sanitised and, well, quiet.

‘There are still a few forums where it is good to follow football, with passionate fans wearing jerseys and scarves, continuous songs…’

The So Foot top ten is:

    1. Boca Juniors (Argentina)

    2. Borussia Dortmund (Germany)

    3. Celtic Glasgow (Scotland)

    4. Raja Casablanca (Morocco)

    5. Napoli (Italy)

    6. Galatasaray (Turkey)

    7. Athletic Club Bilbao (Spain)

    8. Red Star (Serbia)

    9. Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan)

    10. Saint-Etienne (France)

With regard to Celtic, the magazine say about You’ll Never Walk Alone “If this hymn is adored by “Scousers” of Liverpool, at Celtic Park in Glasgow they have a cappella version which is better.”

So Foot also praise the highly charged atmosphere and say that the eyes of Celtic fans go red with emotion. Celtic fans often receive praise around Europe for their travelling fans in the Champions League and Celtic Park is a fearful destination even for the very best teams in the world.

On holiday, so reading tabloids to get news from back home …. I see the daily hun has started a campaign to get Regan sacked, because he refuses to listen to Sevco’s shoite about the behaviour of their poor wee ‘INNOCENT’ Sevco fans at the CF…… The spin out of Ipox is becoming more desperate by the day ….. e.g. It was confirmed by all agencies that no sevco player was physically attacked on the pitch at the CF, but sevco still spin that they were….and they still pathetically spin that their fans entered the field of play to protect their players ….hahahahahahaha ….how hilarious / pathetic is THAT …… gie ma heed a rest, wid yeez …..

So I’ve bought two extra tickets and thought I defaulted to print at home.

Turns out I need to collect but that is problematic with me not being able to get out of work until late.

Does anyone know if you can cancel a ticket purchase then repurchase and do print at home?

  18. Celtic’s participation in The International Champions Cup

There is a steady globalisation of football. From the Amsterdam Tournament of old, to the Emirates Cup and other 4 team preseason tournaments, to the mooted EPL “game 39” played worldwide. These were precursors to the tournament played this preseason. All the top EPL clubs have been playing games in the States and far east for years now, even playing each other in far off lands. It creates marketing opportunities, it capitalises on campaigns gone before, it builds fan bases for the club, for TV subscriptions, and drives revenue into the game of the participating clubs and leagues, that’s why they do it.

Celtic have had the invitation this year, as had Rangers in the past to The Emirates for example and I read they used the get out in 2011 to play Chelsea. The invitation should always be accepted or you reject the most material marketing campaign that football currently has to offer outside the established tournaments. This is not debatable.

Then there’s the cash it generates. Massive sponsors paying participation match fees (per match!) that equals the prize money on offer for winning our domestic league. Incredible.

Celtic have history in paying significant fees to other Scottish clubs for their talent. Looking at the fees others have paid in the past for the likes of Fraser Fyvie, McLean of St Mirren, this year for Dundee’s Greg Stewart and Kane Hemmings, Celtic pay a premium for being Celtic. Look at the fees we paid for the United trio in the last couple of years and dating back to Griffiths to Scott Brown. I’m not complaining about the fees, it’s good that other Scottish clubs get a more reflective fee of their players’ value, but it’s a premium we alone pay. We pay a different fee and we bring in the money to do that by being different.

These tournaments happen in the pre season of the big 5 leagues. Our season starts earlier. That’s for another discussion but the opt out of one match of the SPFL season allows participation, why on earth is that outrageous?

The tournament and schedule has been known for many, many weeks. Known before a ball is kicked in domestic competition. It will squeeze our schedule later in the year, it offers no sporting advantage in the competition.

The team selection on Saturday is what sparked the spotlight on this. The faux outrage was frankly opportunistic, ill considered and the knee jerk response of football bias. Let me make a series of short points

The team selected matters not a jot to any of the participation positives pointed out above.

The tournament involved 3 games, key word is ‘tournament’.

Team selection was based on events long after the scheduling.

Celtic had lost both previous matches to Leicester and Barca, playing all players.

It’s normal to play squad players when there’s no longer anything to play for in a tournament.

Celtic have a Champions League game on Wednesday, why would enhanced preparation not be welcomed?

Incidentally Astana had their game prior to their match with us postponed by request to their league.

Celtic played Motherwell last week and we were without Johansen and Griffiths. Hapoel’s chances for live scouting has been further limited by not playing team and tactics they could seize on this weekend.

SPFL Clubs get a solidarity payment for a compatriot club’s CL qualification.

There is a wider economic boost for big match football.

In summary Celtic’s participation was good for sharpening the team for the earlier two rounds we’ve had in the CL, it was good for Celtic financially, it was good for Scottish football to be showcased on a platform worldwide to which it rarely ever gets access and keeps Scottish football at the table as opposed to the many, many clubs and leagues from across Europe with similar aspirations to ours in terms of the football ‘possible’ that were not given such access.

What I do absolutely get is that Partick were inconvenienced. I think they should be recompensed by Celtic (or the league if Celtic have to pay the league any sort of fee). Personally I’d set it at 10% of the participation fee of the club who postpones the fixture. With good grace I’d happily see Thistle get a 300k Euro windfall.

As I said, what drove me to write this was the ill considered knee jerk ‘Celtic bad’ opportunism of folk who take money from our game, do not enhance it, and put about 8 seconds thought into the line up on Saturday to reach a negative conclusion and then fill it with an entirely ignorant back story.
