Sir David Murray bought Rangers in 1988, two years after the arrival of Graeme Souness had kick-started the football club which had spent most of the previous two decades in the shadow of Celtic, then Aberdeen and Dundee United.
Murray maintained the highly speculative transfer policy of previous owner, Lawrence Malborough, achieving considerable domestic success during his first decade at the club.
Last year Celtic Quick News reported his greatest contribution to Scottish football:
“Within a year of taking control of Rangers Murray ended the most blatant sectarian employment policy still in place in Scotland when his club openly signed a Catholic football player for the first time since before World War I. For this, he deserves enormous credit.
“Many of you grew into adulthood in a country where a large part of the population supported a ‘No Catholics at Rangers’ policy. The sense of shock in 1989 when Rangers signed Maurice Johnston will be difficult to relay to a young reader. This was a taboo no one thought would end.”
After Martin O’Neill’s Celtic redrew the balance of power in Scottish football, Murray found it difficult to compete. He also perhaps found it difficult to lose. A highly controversial Employee Benefit Trust scheme was used to compensate dozens of footballers as well as non-football staff. The consequences of this scheme, the legality of which has still to be decided, brought the club to its knees.
Murray’s business interests had grown from its initial base in steel to encompass a huge property investment empire. When the recession brought a tightening of lending criteria and the property crash arrived in 2008, Celtic Quick News predicted Rangers would go out of business. The clock has been ticking ever since.
Murray sold Rangers to Craig Whyte a year ago, later claiming he was “duped” by Whyte, although former chairman, Alasdair Johnston, today disputes this claim.
All roads of this entire debacle lead back to Murray.
Prediction: Sir David Murray will pay a heavier price than anyone else involved in this mess. I’ll hold fire for now on what I think will be the more serious consequences but I expect Sir David, along with Ogilvie, Clark, Whitehouse and others will face an SFA Judicial Panel for what has happened at Rangers and that none will work in football again.
Many thanks for the info on clubs playing out-with their associations’ geographical area. No more needed.

Paul67 its about 32 degrees in Berlin at the moment and the articles are not helping me chill.
What next for Alistair, I hope he survives as SFL may be his level.
On Doncaster his lack of integrity , leadership and lies on sky etc to date are a sacking offence ; even if he wakes up and smells the coffee tomorrow morning it is too late.
As I travel and occasionally discuss with Rangers business guys , they are surprised about NDs outspoken views. His time is up and the search should be underway ( Eric J Riley aged 54 non exec could be an interim with integrity until these turbulent times are over).

Whats happening tonight? You all talking about the programme on later?
Aberdeen for change.
It was with great anticipation and interest to
eventually read the Aberdeen FC board’s
stance on the ever changing Rangers
situation.
Having been contacted by various media
outlets this morning, this is the Aberdeen
for Change view on the club’s statement.
Firstly, its pleasing to hear that the club are
very much aware of Aberdeen supporters
concerns about allowing a newco Rangers
into the SPL with little or no punishment.
What does cause some concern is that
Aberdeen for Change read the statement as
implying that the Aberdeen FC board will
make a decision based on their ‘own’
opinion of what is in the best interests of
AFC and Scottish football. If this is indeed
the case, it is worrying. Surely the
supporters views matter, especially with
many saying they will walk away from SPL
football if newco Rangers are allowed back
with no punishment.
The club’s supporters don’t want to be told
what their opinion should be about what is
a complex situation. We can form our own
opinions on what is right and wrong based
on all the information on the Rangers
situation. The vast majority feel Rangers
have to be punished and that sporting
integrity does matter over perceived fears
over commercial losses.
The statement from the club effectively says
very little. Again, this is understandable but
the club will at some point have to enter
into dialogue with the support into the pros
and cons of Rangers re-entering the SPL
In conclusion, this is a real chance to make
the right decisions for what the AFC fans
want. It’s a chance to right many wrongs.
Think of the amount of trophies and matches
AFC were in some way ‘cheated’ out of by
Rangers inappropriate conduct over the
years.
Most importantly? AFC’s board have made
some hard decisions over the last ten years
to cut costs over the in the long term
interests of the club. Why should Rangers
excesses in this time therefore be ignored?
Over to you Milne and Fraser….
Plain ole Dave soon.
Oh Happy Day…
When you were young
And your heart was an open book
You used to say live and let live
You know you did
You know you did
You know you did
But if this ever changin’ world
In which we live in
Makes you give in and cry
Say live and let die
Live and let die
What does it matter to ya
When ya got a job to do ya got to do it well
You got to give the other fella hell
You used to say live and let live
You know you did
You know you did
You know you did
But if this ever changin’ world
In which we live in
Makes you give in and cry
Say live and let die
Live and let die

CRUCIAL maintenance work got under way at Ibrox and Murray Park this week thanks to the Rangers Fans Fighting Fund.
Money raised by supporters was put towards key renovation work on the Ibrox playing surface and three training pitches at Auchenhowie.

Sorry, couldn’t resist, 8pm BBC 1 Scotland, Marc Daly lifts the lid on the fiasco at Ibroke.
Doc, if only sky plus was about then.
I see you”ve been busy today Paul. Hope you have an hour or so spare tonight to watch a bit of tv.
I think that the ramifications of what we will soon be witnessing will take years to play out – and may involve more than just SFA Judicial Panels. I’m certain that there will be civil cases to come and wouldn’t be at all surprised were there criminal ones too.
Is anyone doing commentary on the BBC program tonight? I can’t find anywhere to watch it online, yet.
I do have access to Arab Motors and MBC Persia, but I’m not sure either of these stations will screen it.
Hail Hail,

“NORWICH City Manager Paul Lambert has thanked Celtic Football Club and their manager Neil Lennon for helping to make Adam Drury’s testimonial a roaring success in front of over 18,000 fans at Carrow Road.
Both the Yellow Army and the travelling Celtic fans ensured Adam had a night to remember as City ran out 2-0 winners in front in what was a jubilant crowd to honour his 11 years of impeccable service to the Club.
Paul Lambert, who played for Celtic from 1997 until 2005 – and with current Hoops boss Neil Lennon, enjoyed fantastic success with the Scottish Champions, winning nine major honours.
Adam Drury is welcomed out onto the Carrow Road pitch for his Testimonial game
GUARD OF HONOUR: Over 18,000 fans turned out to pay tribute to our longest serving player.
Lambert told Canaries Player: “Listen, I always say if you’re going to get a testimonial, make sure you get Celtic, because everybody can see what a special set of fans they both are, proper football fans.
“I spent eight brilliant years there, and I knew it’d be really fitting if we could get them, and a big thanks to Neil Lennon and Celtic for coming down for somebody that I think deserves a game and an atmosphere like that.
“It was a special night for Adam, and I think it was fitting for somebody who has 11 years at the Football Club, and has been terrific for me in the three years I’ve been here.
“I know what they are like [Celtic fans], they are an absolutely brilliant set of fans, and it’s there for everybody to see. They’ve one of the biggest fan bases in world football let alone anything else, and a big thanks to them for coming down in their numbers, as I say it’s a long way to come.”
Lambert, who addressed the Norwich and Celtic fans on the pitch after the final whistle, admitted that he was pleased to be able to thank them for coming down.
“I’ve never really been back, I think only once to Parkhead to watch a game,” said Lambert.
“I had eight fabulous years there, I played with great players including Neil Lennon and Alan Thompson themselves. I had a fantastic time and I really, really appreciate it.
“With testimonials, you can go out there and just do it in a way that is half-hearted, but I thought the two teams put in a huge effort to entertain the crowd.
“I thought it was a good game for a testimonial and I thought it was a fitting game for Adam.””

Old news rehashed.
HMRC had claimed letters constituted a material difference to EBT’s. Financial experts said this not the case as any Business can dress up an employee benefit in any way they see fit and it will not change either parties tax liabilites one iota.
Rangers are adamant the letters never existed in the first place.
HMRC have since gone quiet on that particular issue. Hardly surprising as their original source, Hugh Adams, had claimed on one hand that such letters definately existed, and on the other that he never actually saw any.

Daly now referring to “undeclared payments.”
——————————————————————————–
On Twitter.
I’m not sure how these can be “undeclared” given EBTs were referenced in our accounts for a decade before HMRC moved the goalposts. Either way, while exposure of dodgy dealings on behalf of ****y custodians is welcome, make no mistake, the thrust of the programme will be ‘voiding’ match results where certain players who used EBTs were involved. Those players will be named tonight and I’d wager Daly will do a ‘look what would’ve happened’ comparison on the basis we lost each ‘EBT match’ 0-3.
Daly will muddy the waters as much as he can, despite no EBT ruling as yet. He’s no friend of ours.
From a biological perspective, the Krakatau problem refers to the question of whether the islands were completely sterilized by the 1883 eruption or whether some life survived. When the first researchers reached the islands in May 1884, the only living thing they found was a spider in a crevice on the south side of Rakata’.
‘At least I’m no’ a Hillbilly’ said the spider gazing out through his hundreds of eyes at the cataclysmic devastation, before he ran under a rock, of which there was a profusion.
The spider’s name was Lucky.

I expect many of us to be disappointed with tonight’s programme. Not because the content is watered down and not because it’s not hard hitting.
I believe that for nearly 18 months we’ve been spoiled by the work done by several members of the Celtic family not least our esteemed host on CQN. I don’t expect Daly to divulge much that is new to us, though I could be well wide of the mark here, but the significant thing is that he has a platform on which to reach a much wider audience.
After tonight there will be no hiding place for those at fault there will be no refuge for those who cheated and lied. After tonight everyone will know and they won’t be able to label it as the ramblings of a shower of ‘internet bampots’ who have really known all along what was going on.
