Principled resignations, ASA withdraw adjudication

1739

I cannot fathom why someone would leak their intentions to quit as chairman of a football club.  Either Walter Smith is sufficiently alarmed by the conduct of his club to resign, or he should be busy working to resolve matters.  Leaking that he intends to resign will surely only add to the nonsense that surrounds the club.

Some will believe that Smith, who accepted the position as chairman of Rangers International when season tickets went on sale in May, can shuffle of the scene now 34,000 tickets have been sold.  Shareholder votes will determine the future of the club, in this instance, the identity of the chairman has little reach beyond parting fans with their cash.

Some investors may consider a more immediate problem is why the club are burning a hugely disproportionate amount of cash to secure promotion from the third tier of Scottish football, and why a management structure is not in place to deploy resources more effectively.

In light of Francisco Sandaza’s off-the-cuff comments to Tommy in Glasgow, and his subsequent dismissal by Rangers International, we urge Mr McCoist to be more cautious than he was after his team’s spirited, but ultimately fruitless, performance in Forfar on Saturday.  It would be unfortunate if McCoist transgressed a condition of employment and suffered accordingly.

Advertising Standards Authority ruling withdrawn

It doesn’t rain but it pours.  The Independent Review Process of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has looked into the ASA’s recent, and widely reported, ruling on Rangers International’s claim on football titles won by a liquidated club. The Review found that “it was a procedural flaw for the ASA to have relied on an extract only of a report sent to it by the advertiser”.

Further, the review process ruled that “there was also the risk of a substantial flaw of adjudication in the distinction that had been made between ‘club’ and ‘company’, especially in the light of previous ASA decisions about companies that change hands and the circumstances in which the new company could or could not trade off the reputation of the old company”.

The Chairman of the ASA, Lord Smith of Finsbury, as decided to reopen the ASA’s investigation into the case and to withdraw the published adjudication, which favoured the advertiser.  Withdrawing this adjudication does not infer that a different outcome will subsequently be reached.  To use a football analogy, it’s half time and they’re all square.

An interesting, and potentially critical part of the story, is that after the initial ASA decision was issued, the club’s web site noted that their submission to the process included information that a “panel of the London Stock Exchange” supported their claim.

The Stock Exchange subsequently appeared surprised at this assertion, so much so that the club promptly withdrew the claim from the web article.

“You’re history, that’s what you are, na na na na”.

Why are Scottish flags at Parkhead as rare as hens teeth? I don’t involve myself too much with politics and don’t like getting drawn into why this flag is allowed whilst another is not. So I can’t answer your question about Che or any of the other questions either because:

    I. I am here,

    2. I am not a mind reader.

To find the answer to the questions you pose then you would have to ask those involved.

I think the last time it was discussed it was suggested that there was a bit of a fast-track process in place, which is probably understandable. However I would think that should maybe be reviewed in light of events this year, if it hasn’t been already.

If there was something sinister going on at Police HQ and this is one of the few occasions when I actually think there might be, I suspect they might be clever enough to be doing things by the book.

  4. Just been asked by one of my Ajax supporting collegues how Derk Boerrigter played on Saturday. When i told him Derk was looking good before he was was injured he shook his head and started to laugh. Claims the lad spent more time on the treatment table than on the football pitch.

Sometimes I wish people on here were huns. Celtic would be better without their association.

  6. Not joined in discussions for a long long time……………some things change some things stay forever the same………….ah those pesky kids!!………Does anybody really in their heart of hearts think that if the GB did not indulge in some songs or did not mention the word poppy……….and only did the lateral movement jumping up and down thing……..celtic fc would still be closing this part of the stadium down??……………OF COURSE NOT!!!

I never mentioned Reid at all, not today, not yesterday, not this week either. I was talking to macjay about Robert Kelly and board politics back in the late sixties.

So, if you were not aware of what was being discussed… what motivated your post to me?

  9. A Stor Mo Chroi 9:20

I offered an OPINION on what might be a H&S concern (given that I worked with a precast company for 10 years) – I qualified that opinion with: check it out with a structural engineer as I have no idea of the stadium loadings!

At no time did I say that the steel structural frame was at risk. I merely pointed out that concrete bends/ flexes and that due to that, there MIGHT be concern relating to weakening of the anchorage points of (e.g.) seating and crush-barriers:

Notice the use of the words: opinion and might!

Now whether this constitutes damage to seating or not – I have no idea. Someone (in authority) clearly thinks that lateral movement constitutes a H&S risk and that steps should be taken to mitigate that risk. The Board have a duty (under H&S legislation) to address it – hence the ultimatum.

Now I would like to watch the football same as I do when at home; feet up, with a beer and a cigarette. Guess what? Stadium rules prevent that and I therefore comply if I want to watch live football at Celtic Park.

I stated that I have no axe to grind with the GB. The message to them is fairly simple: comply with House Rules – same as the rest of the support are obliged to do.

I defended the proper application of H&S legislation on the blog. But as is all too often the way these days – if your opinion/ comment differs to that of certain posters then some will resort to; misquoting, ridicule or personal abuse as a means of conversing with you rather than engaging you.

I retire on Thursday (65) – given the argumentative way CQN has been going this past year – it might be a good time to retire from here and revert to; lurking/ scrolling past.

I believe the evidence provided by the many fans from section 111 whether they be GB members or not, the evidence i have seen, read and listened to regarding Celtic’s communications and dealings with Police Scotland and the GB have led me to completely distrust the club on this issue

  13. Just need to create a standing section to accomadate the GB and any other fans in section 111, not sure where we would put it, maybe the old family stand area in the joining of main stand and Jock Stein stand.

Hopefully issue resolved in the next few weeks, the GB add great colour and voice to Paradise, but the club were left in a sticky situation after all the broken seats

Nothing wrong with challenging authority, especially when the authority in this case (Lawwell) is feart to challenge the authorities making a mockery of the game at great expense to Celtic.

Why respect the authority of a man who wanted to ‘give them enough rope’ when talking about the GB but who has the famous ‘dossier’ and has taken ‘keeping your powder dry’ to the point of being obsolete when it comes to Celtic being shafted by the SFA.

The family seats are in 111 and to be honest, there are a few numpty hangers-on who cause more grief than the core group.

All I can say is we are a broad church and we have a board approved mantra of all inclusive. Does that ‘all inclusive’ actually not really mean ‘all inclusive’, are there conditions we are not being made aware of? (rhetorical)

At least you know I’ll turn up with a Scotland flag or two. Well after being jailed in the 70’s in both Glasgow and Edinburgh for being in possession of tri-colours, I know I won’t have to fork out for lawyers fees.

I don’t really anybody wins here.

For those that think the board is only interested in the money it can squeeze from the fans, if the situation is not resolved and some fans choose not to go or simply drift away then the board are losing out too.

No to me this is a lose/lose for all involved except for those keen to see our support divided.

If there wasn’t external pressure here, I doubt the board would be taking this action. If they’d wanted to get rid of the boisterous fans in 111, they’d have done it long ago.
