Promise of Compper crucial to how Celtic play

306

Celtic were not back to their brilliant best last night but two very fine goals and denying Partick Thistle any resemblance of a chance was more than satisfactory. Importantly, last night was the last onerous fixture Celtic players have the middle of February. There are no European or international fixtures until then, so our players will play the same amount of football as others in the league.

Partick were as poor at team as we have seen this season but it took an exceptional piece of play from Stuart Armstrong to open them up. Stuart and Tom Rogic both have the ability to win games from the edge of the area, an underappreciated resource.

The promise of Marvin Compper is that he is a fast central defender, good in the air and, more importantly, can receive and make a pass. The role of central defenders has changed beyond recognition since the days of Bobo Balde. They are now more playmaker than stopper. Celtic’s entire system of play depends on central defenders who can find space with passes out of defence.

There will be no resale value from Marvin, but at £1m he is an investment we can afford to write-off over the next two years.

Welcome to Celtic, Marvin.

When coaching at Eastercraigs if we were playing against two centre backs I got our centre forward to ‘mark’ the spare player thus creating loads of space through the middle as his marker followed him around. Thought Broony could have tried something similar last night when the mutt McCarthy was trying to man mark him in midfield.

Your memory is better than mine then! I do think that no blame was given to any of the Swiss players.

Who would have thought that evening that we would not qualify for a European semi final after a match at Celtic Park? Apparently ever again.

    Hot Smoked….

I’ll try to answer your question, but Remember, our system similar, but not identical to yours…. so I could be a little bit off, but, as I understand it, this is it in a nutshell….

If someone over there practices in this area wants to correct me, I wont be offended!

In short, when a party buys a certain percentage of shares (30%, as I recall), they are then required to offer to buy the balance of the shares in the company at a fixed price. This is to protect the rights of minority shareholders; the idea is that, if I bought shares in company, and then one person takes over, they may not have my interests at heart, and so have to buy out my shares. Note that he was required to offer to purchase them, but people are not required to sell to him.

The TakeOver Appeal Body ( a regulatory body that overseees aspects of corporate conduct) held that he had triggered the 30% provision, and was required to offer to buy the balance of the shares.

the problem is that he did not make the offer, Probably because (i) the fixed price for the shares was too high for his liking, and (ii) he didn’t have enough money in any event.

so, the next step for the Takeover Board is for it to enforce that decision (which he is contesting)

As I understand it, he is claiming that (i) ‘he’ did not buy the shares (rather they were bought through a family trust, which is not the same as ‘him’, and (ii) that, he did not act as a group with the other two numpties (Bears, I mean), such that he did not trigger the 30% threshold.

If his objection is rejected, he can be punished. Usually,in the first instance, there would be an Order requriing him to make the offer. If he fails to do so, there can be further penalties, including not alllowing him to be a director….

As I say, it is a bit different than our process, so I may have a few details a bit off, but as I understand it, that is the gist of it.

But, as I said, if someone over there wishes to edumacate me, I wont be offended….

    :)

I was watching the 1980 game against Real Madrid, forgot how much they controlled the game until we scored. The commentator sounded genuinely excited when we scored ! The crowd sang ‘we’re going to win the cup, again’

We all went to Madrid full of hope for another big cup semi but alas it was not to be and spent days coming back home :0(

The reach of the Celtic Foundation is fantastic.

Mrs VFR works in Social Work in the East End doing Children & Families work. The Foundation turned up today with what she describes as a phenomenal amount of top quality presents and gifts ranging from toys for babes in arms through to present for older teenagers. Literally a room-full she said.

So from today, her Social Workers were going out to see families with bin bags full of toys for the children. It will make for a very happy Christmas for a lot of under-privileged children!

    Disagree, Paul.

You need BOTH: you need both a playmaker and a stopper in central defence.

A central team, if you like: with different but complementary skills.

Times may have changed buy they both need the basics: to be physically stong and imposing, good in the air, and can comfortably receive and make a pass. out of defence.

You need players who will not be bullied – they should be the ones that are bullying!

One with predominately playmaker and the other with predominately stopper skills works for me.

    Hot Smoked …

I’ll be honest, I have kind of stopped paying much attention to any of what happens in Scottish football, as I think the whole thing is a sham …. ( I still hang about here because I like the people I have met through CQN so much!) so I haven’t really turned my mind to the big picture with this … but I suspect that your comment about it being more important to king is probably right …

Murray was easy to figure out … he was making money out the back door through his other ventures… but I am not sure how King is making money out of all of this …

but then again, I dont know why he wouldn’t just have made the offer as I dont imagine that a lot of zombies would sell their shares (even though he would have to pay more than they are really worth ) … much like most Celtic fans hold their shares not as an investment per se … so, there is something else at play …

  20. Good evening friends. Just been to confession and now away to do a non-judgemental scroll back ;-)

    Thanks again.

I know what you mean when you say , ` I have kind of stopped paying much attention to any of what happens in Scottish football, as I think the whole thing is a sham …` and were I not living in Scotland I would be the same.

Actually living here, though, I am able , mentally, to support the Spirit of Celtic . Whilst doing so, I manage to divorce myself from reality and live in the hope that Res 12 and/or Sevco`s demise will eventually lead to a game devoid of corruption. By so doing,I still enjoy going to the games. For how long that continues to be the case remains to be seen.

Since you posted, I have Googled and what you have said seems accurate but thanks again for your help. Appreciated.

  24. Disappointed to read of the harassment of young fans by stewards at last nights game.We have over 50,000 season ticket holders, that is seats bought and paid for.If this is such a big problem why don`t the club quantify the revenue they believe is being lost or are they just trying to profit and alienate young fans.We have a majority shareholder who actively looks for loopholes to avoid paying tax to his country of domicile,we have Lord Ian Livingston who voted in favour of cutting tax credits for some of the poorest families in the UK.Are Celtic fans not putting enough money into the club for these people.Surely its not beyond the club to have fans register or nominate family or friends when they cant use their ticket. It is worrying when you look at the age of the young fans being harassed last night,
