Pure, athletic, Thatcherism

935

It’s all politics.  Not actual politics, in the strict definition of the word, but clubs’ dealings with the SPFL and SFA is mostly about politically manoeuvring in the direction to win your argument.

Experienced political operators will tell you not to fight the same people on too many points; pick the important areas to win and take a few defeats on the chin.  Box the SPFL into a corner by not charging season ticket holders for entry into play-off matches, and you’re onto a sure win.  But all SPFL clubs are members of the SFA.

They all like being given their place.  If I wanted something important from the SFA, like exemption from the rule prohibiting directors of a liquidated club from subsequently becoming a club director, I’d concentrate on that and ask politely for permission to let season ticket holders into games.

But I realise there are different types of political animal.  The consensus political animal is effective in certain times, then there are those who have a self-righteous tone to rules.  It’s their way or the highway.  To paraphrase Bob Shankly, pure, athletic, Thatcherism.  Britain wasn’t ready for Thatcherism 30 years ago.  She won in 1979 and lost lots of votes second time around in ’83, but the Labour vote split.  The 80s were lean.  For some.

Scottish football is in for a period where a self-righteous entity will muster its forces.  The media coverage will reflect what we saw in politics in the 80s.  The consensus operators must stand firm and unite.

Great Britain not ready for Thatcherism in 1979? I would argue that it was very much ready. North Sea oil started flowing in 1975, (why else would the Queen ever visit Grangemouth), and GB was technically self-sufficient in oil by 1979. Same for coal and natural gas. By 1982, by which time Thatcher’s experiment was in full flow, the UK was the fifth biggest exporter in oil, a feat equalled by Mexico some years later, another success story. Point being the country was ripe for mass unemployment and an all out attack on Trade Unionism. The rest is history.

  16. TTT @ 18.36hrs,

I totally understand your sentiments, the political debates can often be detremental to the blog and the personal abuse and lack of respect between Celtic supporters can be frankly sad and disappointing.

With the greatest respect however politics affects every move and every decision that our Club takes. It can be stated that our club was founded due to the prevailing politics of the time. We were founded primerially to feed the poor of a certain denomination in the East End of Glasgow. From soup kitchens in 1887 to food banks in 2015. From life expectancy in Glasgow’s East End for men in 1887 of 42 years to life expectancy in 2015 of 54 years.

Our founders were political figures, from Michael Davitt , William Mckillop through the years to Michael Kelly, Brian Wilson, John Reid etc.

When our fans are targeted by UEFA, criminalised by the OB act then we have to talk politics. When the club, the Celtic foundation and ordinary fans feel the need and obligation to help local food banks feed our people then we must talk politics.

Celtic and by definition the fans are intertwined in Scottish and Irish politics ( no matter what PL says ). Sure is CQN 16 not anticipated to be held in Dublin with its timing to coincide with the Easter rising. Is that not political ?

From controversial “poppy” debates to safe standing areas we have to debate the politics .

I sincerely hope this has not offended you or anyone else for that matter as that is not the purpose of this reply. But for me current politics drives our destiny.

BSR – Got a good picture of the zombie shop in Belfast before it went to the wall there, on the fone – Clothing down sale wrote in cheap black paint.

Also have a picture of one of the other Belfast Deadco shops that closed on one of my old phones – shutters down with a to let sign above the Deadco name and crest.

They never seem to learn. That’s about three or four shops they have opened over the years – all went the same way.

In saying that I noticed a new Liverpool shop in town today – they had two that closed down – Manchester United had a shop as well – it went the same way.

The Celtic shop is the only one that stood the test of time – and long may it continue.

Sport shop across the street could have Celtic tops on sale maybe a tenner cheaper than the Celtic shop – the Celtic supporters just ignore that and buy their pluck in the Celtic store.

As our stable of loanees enjoyed a return to a full programme of domestic action, Jason Denayer extended his stay in the headlines.

The Belgian defender made his senior international debut against Israel last week and returned to Scotland to play 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory for Celtic over St Mirren. Now eight points clear at the top, the Bhoys are edging ever closer to the title as the season enters its final weeks.

Denayer has received rave reviews during his stay in Glasgow, and now former Celtic captain and now youth coach, Tom Boyd, has added his voice to those suggesting the youngster is ready to make a Premier League impact.

Boyd told the Daily Mail: “Jason certainly looks like he could go back to Man City and make an impression. For a young boy, he’s been exceptional. He looks a lot older in his play and it surprises you when you remind yourself how young he actually is.
