Rallying call to supporters from the manager

1060

Neil Lennon’s interview with the official site was the second resounding State of the Club address from Celtic within a week.  The manager said:

”Clearly, in terms of where Rangers do play, that is now a matter for others to decide upon, it is something we have no control or influence over.

“We must now move on, and move on with a collective unity between the supporters and the club and the team.

“We need to stand strong, shoulder to shoulder and all work together to continue to move the club in the right direction.

“We want as many fans as possible to come back to the club and take their seat at Celtic Park and invest in the club as much as possible.

“We are now looking forward and not back, we have a vibrant young team, I want to progress this team as far as I can but we cannot do this without the fans’ support.

“There will be no slacking off or complacency, we have a lot to look forward to and that´s what we are preparing for, but I need to be very clear, we need our fans with us every step of the way.

“We cannot let outside negative influences dictate the mood at Celtic, we are very optimistic and we are very much looking forward to the season but we need our fans right with us”.

“It´s imperative we make inroads in Europe again this year and it would be nice to get through the qualifiers and into the Champions League group stages, but I´m under no illusion how difficult that´s going to be

“Everyone wants to play at the big table and that´s our whole focus. We go into this as champions and that is a fantastic feeling, so hopefully that will give the players an extra spring in their step.

“If we qualify then you never know where it will take us.”

I hear season ticket sales are up on the corresponding period last season but the message from Neil is clear, with the driver for high-value corporate ticket sales missing, Celtic are more dependent on ordinary supporters buying tickets than ever before.

This is your tax-and-supplier-paying-champions-today-and-next-season-Celtic.  You wouldn’t rather it any other way so get along and enjoy it.

  1. Top of the morning to you all from a wet, but brightening Fife.

Having slept on the matter I think that Neil Lennon was right to issue a rallying call for all supporters to get behind the team.

But he was wrong to say we should “move on” with regards to the Rangers issue.

The SFA & SPL did not get away with their claims of Armageddon, and bullying tactics with the 11 SPL clubs, but if they now get away with doing the same and worse to the SFL teams then the game is a bogey.

Supporting the team and standing up to corruption and bullying are not mutually exclusive.

Awe Naw, sorry but I read your post as I was logging off yesterday…having to work is a nuisance! Apologies for the delay in offering you the courtesy of a reply.

You are entirely right that Celtic stand firm throughout this carry on. I believe that they are and that they will but as I stated, that belief may eventually prove to be mis-placed. At this stage we don’t know. I also believe that we have done the right thing publicly by not making Celtic the story here. I know others have a different view.

What is paramount for me is a strong Celtic in a clean and healthy league. All my days I have wished that league was any league other than one in Scotland. That is still my wish. Until that day comes, if ever, we are stuck with what we have but we must always strive to improve it. Any Celtic board member who does not strive to do what is right for Celtic and for the integrity of the game is a Celtic board member that ought not to be in place.

I have seen nothing based on fact to suggest that this is the case and until that time comes, God forbid, Celtic will as I stated earlier, have my unequivocal support.

I find it it inconcievable that Messrs Lawwell, Desmond and co are unaware of the depth of feeling among our support regarding this matter. Even if some have doubts about how much of a “Celtic Man” each of our board members may be – and I don’t – I don’t believe they are stupid enough to endanger all their efforts in keeping the club on a sound financial footing over the years to commit commercial suicide by being party to any “help Sevco” campaign

  6. Here is my summary of what Neil Lennon said:

    “Celtic are interested in Celtic.

The MSM will be negative as usual but we want continued, great support to enable this very promising, young team to achieve its exciting potential and do well in Europe. Our future is in your hands. We are nothing without our fans.”

  7. Fed up with the whole Newco rubbish

Football is the big loser in all of this

CFCs failure to comment on the SFAs gerrymandering is inexcusable …..a disgraceful situation has developed here with our manager saying its now up to others to agree the fate of Newco

No SPL clubs have spoke out against this Div1 stick up . The logical conclusion being that Doncaster must be working to instructions .

However , even if Newco get intoDiv 1 this charade is far from over .

It has rained in Glasgow for forty days and forty nights, and people and going in and out of houses in pairs.

    PFayr,

I agree on Doncaster – he is sackable and when he wasn’t instantly handed his jotters last week then it became crystal clear that he was acting on SPL board instruction.

I believe that the Celtic board tactics of staying out of the spotlight have been spot on in this debacle – but I would conclude that many of us might not like the strategy if we were party to what was really going on.

  15. Some interlopers on this site might believe we are continuing a campaign of hatred against the hunz.

Whilst for many this may be true.

However, I believe the vast majority simply want to have a clean game in Scotland. One where the officials, at all levels, perform their duties ‘without fear or favour’. Something we have never, ever had.

If EVERY team is treated in this way, the game can flourish.

Carry on with the current corrupt regime and the game will die.

It may linger on for a bit but it will die unless it is cleansed of corruption.

The SPL have taken a stand. Time for the SFL to do so.

Together they can force the SFA to follow suit.

  16. If,as seems likely, the SFL clubs don’t vote sevco into Div1 then Regan has said they will push through SPL2.

Can someone help me to understand how,in practical terms, this can be achieved before the start of the new season.

Would places be offered to those who voted yes to sevco in Div1?

What if the clubs in question were the likes of East Stirling etc who seem to dwell around the lower reaches of Div3?Would they leapfrog the likes of Partick Thistle,Dunfermline etc?

Does the SFL not have rules, statutes, votes etc re.teams notice period to leave the set-up?

Would the SPL clubs not have an input into the set-up?

How could any of this be achieved, unchallenged, before the new season?

  17. Sorry of posted this was on twitter.

A disturbing rumour circulating Westminster today reaches me this evening which ties in to the rumours about the time spent by both Regan and Doncaster in London of late:

Salmond has agreed a potential £10m bail-out fund with Cameron and Alexander for SPL clubs which get into financial difficulty in next year as result of RFC, but only (and this won’t be made public) if RFC are given “realistic” position in league structure. Fund will be announced once RFC future in league is secure. My source (a Conservative MP) says that “nobody wants 50,000 hooligans roaming the streets during the referendum campaign”, “the collapse of Scottish football on our watch would be cataclysmic for us AND the SNP” and “it’s all just posturing, of course, if Rangers are back in then there is no need for the funds”.

Anyone care to ask Alex on twitter or some such if it is true?

  18. Kevtic

“Celtic are on the verge on having a very good team, I for one don’t want it rip apart because we need to sell or can’t afford wages due to the absence of rangers. ”

Now, I am close to agreeing with you there though I am broadly on the other side of the renewal argument.

You see, if your (the board’s) premise was right i.e. We need to downsize because of the absence of Rangers, I would say ok but show me the evidence first. Tell me what revenue we will lose. We CAN handle the truth.

This is the same message that United fans and Killie fans made to their chairmen when they looked like siding with Sevco. And not one chairman supplied that proof and not one Journo has supplied that proof and Regan & Doncaster, the front men, have failed to supply evidence instead of assertions. Indeed, it was the active bloggers who have researched the issue and been told that Sky/ESPN have absolutely no plans to withdraw from any deal next year. Shona Robison has assured us that the Community Initiative money will be unaffected. How do you not come to the conclusion that this is scaremongering rather than sober costed accounting? The explanation of how revenues are to be lost has been as amateurish as Sevco’s presentation to the SPL vote.

I would respect a Celtic Board that came out and said, we would love to be able to see a team that cheated go out of existence but we cannot afford to cut off our nose to spite our face because we have been assured of the following details on downturns in revenue. That would be the direct and honest way to deal with the support. It may not convince all but it would stand a better chance of convincing me than pretending that Celtic have no influence in the way this is going and that they have no alternative but to accept a gerrymandered Scottish football set up where, against generations of football regulations, league places are awarded on financial power rather than sporting merit .

Are you happy to be told, not explained to, that there is no alternative?

Given the info in your post @8-00…Doncaster should be as sacked for negotiating such a poor deal in the first place

  21. The problem for the board in explaining any loss of revenue is that it gives a load of ammunition to the msm and Regan and Doncaster. Can you imagine how quickly they’d pounce on any declaration of season ticket sales being lower, or merchandise sales being reduced? They wouldn’t be able to churn out “Celtic admit that they need Rangers” stories quick enough.

If we are to establish the truth on the back door manipulations, we might need a better source than a Tory MP :-)

I can see the social disorder re Sevco going out argument, but I cannot see any politician assessing that 4 leagues of Senior Scottish football needs saving. Most of those clubs are not big contributors to the economy, valuable though they may be at Community level.

  23. The DR already have Celtic downsizing, as predicted they would weeks ago when it became clear ‘they’ were dead.

As sure as night follows day a Celtic fan will still believe what they read in the DR.
