Recency matters in partnerships

115

Brendan Rodgers confirmed yesterday that Maik Nawrocki has recovered from his hamstring injury, sustained in the League Cup defeat at Kilmarnock two months ago.  Since then, Celtic have been through a crisis in central defence.  Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Welsh were already absent, Nat Phillips came in on loan, then immediately picked up an injury, and Gustaf Lagerbielke collected a red card and subsequent suspension in the Champions League.  Only Liam Scales has remained available throughout.

Now, Brendan’s immediate problem is different: how to create a partnership from this group capable of facing Hearts and Atletico Madrid over the next six days.  Given Cameron is certain to start, that makes the two players he has partnered in central defence this season the only realistic options: Liam and Maik.

Coincidentally, Cameron has played exactly one and a half games with each.  Recency matters.  Cameron and Maik faced Ross County and Aberdeen in August, Cameron and Liam partnered against Lazio and Kilmarnock this month.  We have to go into the next three fixtures: Hearts, Atletico and Hibs, with Cameron and Liam.  Thereafter, all bets are off.

  1. HT – hope you’re not blown away out there.

I doubt I would have any in my 1st 11 either, perhaps at CB but that’s not a given.

The point being we have recruited poorly if none of the new players are deemed better than what we have had for the best part of 2 seasons…….how did we manage that?

  2. Prestonpans bhoys on

    Chris Sutton ripping into Cantwell, this one is a belter;

Go back to last season in the big meaningful games against Celtic. What’s your memory of Todd Cantwell? Taking a water bottle away from the Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate. Not the ball, a water bottle.”

  3. Johnny Doyle : The Man Who Loved The Green

I’ve travelled ’round these islands, from shore to shining shore,

I’ve met so many heroes, from the team that I adore,

I’ve followed Glasgow Celtic, from London to Aberdeen,

But I always remember, the man who loved the green.

And Johnny Doyle told me, just before he died,

I live for Glasgow Celtic, I’m just a Celtic bhoy.

He came from Ayr United, to join his favourite team,

To play for Glasgow Celtic, would fulfil his dream,

Around about St Patrick’s Day, signed by Big Jock Stein,

He played only for the jersey, the man who loved the green.

And Johnny Doyle told me, just before he died,

I live for Glasgow Celtic, I’m just a Celtic bhoy.

In Europe 1980, he made a gallant bid,

He capped a great performance, against Real Madrid,

He rose with two defenders, to win the ball so clean,

With Sabido and Camacho, was the man who loved the green.

And Johnny Doyle told me, just before he died,

I live for Glasgow Celtic, I’m just a Celtic bhoy.

So in your prayers remember, a gallant Celtic son,

His young life cut so cruelly, in 1981,

The 19th of October, is the day when I’ll be seen,

Browsing through my photos, of the man who loved the green.

And Johnny Doyle told me, just before he died,

I live for Glasgow Celtic, I’m just a Celtic bhoy.

    Johnny Doyle

  4. What an odious character Sunak is. Horrendous unapologetic pro Zionist manufactured individual.

Some lives clearly have massively more value than others to this little puppet.

As for Braverman and the right wing self serving scum I simply cannot wait for these pieces of dirt to be out of any kind of power.

  5. B78- you said Sunak wasn’t the worst Prime Minister we’ve had lately? A very low bar right enough

  6. Bada Bing

    Exactly.

2 even worse out of the last 3. Maybe even 3 out of the last 4. But today he showed himself to be utterly spineless and completely manufactured. Without a single compassionate cell in his body. A kind of diplomatic Braverman type.

  7. Whilst Braverman is as ridiculously dislikable a Tory as I have seen at least she has an excuse for her bias in the Palestine issue as she is married to a Jewish person. Sunak has none.

Has the blog done a Rankers and Died?

    D :)

    ——

Possibly, but more likely Burnley 78 has done a Ratner moment.
