Recency matters in partnerships

115

Brendan Rodgers confirmed yesterday that Maik Nawrocki has recovered from his hamstring injury, sustained in the League Cup defeat at Kilmarnock two months ago.  Since then, Celtic have been through a crisis in central defence.  Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Welsh were already absent, Nat Phillips came in on loan, then immediately picked up an injury, and Gustaf Lagerbielke collected a red card and subsequent suspension in the Champions League.  Only Liam Scales has remained available throughout.

Now, Brendan’s immediate problem is different: how to create a partnership from this group capable of facing Hearts and Atletico Madrid over the next six days.  Given Cameron is certain to start, that makes the two players he has partnered in central defence this season the only realistic options: Liam and Maik.

Coincidentally, Cameron has played exactly one and a half games with each.  Recency matters.  Cameron and Maik faced Ross County and Aberdeen in August, Cameron and Liam partnered against Lazio and Kilmarnock this month.  We have to go into the next three fixtures: Hearts, Atletico and Hibs, with Cameron and Liam.  Thereafter, all bets are off.

Recency will be all that matters when Celtic face Atlético next Wednesday night at Celtic Park but you can always learn a few things from the past to get into the right frame of mind

The Celtic team which played in the European Cup semi- final first leg in 1974 was very similar to the Lisbon Lions in that they were all relatively local players. The exception being Tommy Callaghan who was from Cowdenbeath about, 50 km away from Celtic Park.

The Atletico team in contrast was quite a different story. Four South American players and seven spaniards, one of whom was born in Argentina! None of the Spaniards were from Madrid, not even Cowdenbeath or Saltcoats close. The closest was from Plasencia in Extremadura….250 km away from Madrid.

Curiously, in 2023 the Atlético first team has a large crop of local Madrid players like Koke, Llorente, Morata and Hermoso with youngsters like Barrios and Riquelme getting game time as well. There still is an Argentinian /Uruguayan presence in the current team with 2 world cup winners in Molina and De Paul and Correa being part of the Argentina squad as well, and the massive defender Gimenez from Uruguay. More massive defenders in the shape of Savic, Azpilicueta and a new signing from Turkey, Soyuncu.

The Brazilian Lino has been their revelation of the season so far, energising the left back position to set up and even score himself. Griezmann is the conductor of the orchestra and is finally back in the good books with the support after he shot the craw to go play for FC Barcelona a few seasons ago. An ace up their sleeve is Dutchman Memphis Depay who can wallap them from a distance and is built like a horse. Simeone also uses Witsel as a utilty player, but at 34 is not as agile as he was. Oblak in goal is a guarantee usually but playing in a team that likes to soak up the pressure can take its toll and he has been the brunt of the pressure for many seasons now. Saying that he´ll play a blinder.

The match next week will be at the same time as the 1974 duel, a Wednesday night at 8pm….proper football time………….como Dios manda.

    RIP Johnny

I saw Johnny Doyle play, what was the name of that Glasgow band? Hipsway? Well Johnny´s hips swayed when he went by defenders

    Cheers MICK.

While I was on the phone to my DA yesterday he spoke about running onto the Pitch in Lisbon as soon as the Final Whistle went to celebrate.

HE thinks his Ticket for the LISBON Final was £4.00 ?

I know for FACT that he ” TAPPED” his Mammy for a few QUID and took a week aff sick from work, to travel to Lisbon.

His Mammy, was the FINE LADY who brought me up as I didnt know my Mother. Obviously, she was my GRANNY, but I ALWAYS called her ” MA”……….as I was led to believe that SHE WAS my Mother until I was about 13 ?

ANNIE was the FINEST Woman that I have ever known….SHE was ” THE GOVERNOR ” of the Family..

    LOL

  6. Melbourne Mick on

    Morning bhoys.

Blistering hot 32 degs here today, and summers still to

    come.

Think El Niño will hit us with record hot temperatures

    this year.

Kept myself cool by visiting the market bars nearby,

    while the princess shopped.

Pleased to see plenty of Celtic tops on show, and I must

say looking good in the sunshine.

  7. Frank Terry’s post deleted??? You’re having a laugh…. Or at least those of us lucky to have seen it have had a laugh at Piers getting the piss ripped out of him whilst making really salient points.

    Mustn’t upset the oppressor

Dearie me…. Copyright, you know who.

  8. FRANK TERRY

You’re not allowed to mention Palestine on here apparently, I had a 2 word post and a flag emoji deleted yesterday !

  9. Didn’t get he chance to read Frank Terry’s earlier post before it got deleted, so don’t know what I would have thought about.

Some other posts also got deleted, Sionnaigh for example, for, whatever you think, were only asking questions.

Sounds just like Arbroath at the moment :-)))

Hope your flight is calm enough ( although I am sure you have a remedy to make it so !).

  12. Can’t remember as much angst and gnashing of teeth on here at the murder of civilians, destruction of Cities,,millions being made refugees, all inflictedi on Ukraine by Putin and his abhorrent government.Indeed, the opposite in fact.A lot of support for the aggressors churned out on these pages, lot of it funnily enough by people who are now showing a lot of anti Israel feelings.

Do oppressed and oppressor change ,like fads, and fashion,on these pages,or is it something much darker.

  13. Turkeybhoy

Must have missed it, but havent seen a lot of support for the Aggressors i.e. Russia/Putin on here.

Have seen plenty of discussion not support for Russia/Ukraine/Nato/US

Seeing as you want universal/global discussions, you should “churn” out /start off some discussions on Erdogan/Turkey, Yemen, Armenia ?, Venezuela, Sudan, Libya, Syria, CAR, Mali, Somalia,………………….

Thought, I doubt it would be allowed these days ?

  14. BIG JIMMY 19 OCTOBER 12.34pm

great post Jimmy, reminded me of my auld Dad, passed away 5 years ago, had the chance to go to Lisbon but felt it was to dear for him, never watched the game but washed his car instead, fast forward 3 years and we were all on the plane to Milan, i was 12 years old, not a great result but a brilliant experience, i remember on the plane home i said not to worry we’ll be back to another final very soon, had to wait another 33 years to see us play in a european final, tickets secured, i returned the compliment and took him and my 2 sons to Seville, disappointing result but what an experience for my Dad and my 2 sons, miss my Dad everyday, hopefully sometime in the near future my 2 sons will be able to return the compliment to me, for me the chain would be complete…Hail Hail

    Great post

Since I’m in a memory mood with all these great posts recently

and we’re all desperate to see the bhoys again, here’s my wee

memory, I’ve told it before on here, but typical of the older

generation, we like to repeat ourselves.

Just married to my wee princess, Celtic have reached another

European final, a team from Glasgow feared throughout the

world, how could I miss that ?

  16. Well for a start I had no money, no employment, and

    no prospects of a job.

“ Right, I’m going to Milan “ I said to my new bride.

“ MILAN Mick, how you gonna do that ?

“ Im going to hitchhike “
