Recency matters in partnerships

115

Brendan Rodgers confirmed yesterday that Maik Nawrocki has recovered from his hamstring injury, sustained in the League Cup defeat at Kilmarnock two months ago.  Since then, Celtic have been through a crisis in central defence.  Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Welsh were already absent, Nat Phillips came in on loan, then immediately picked up an injury, and Gustaf Lagerbielke collected a red card and subsequent suspension in the Champions League.  Only Liam Scales has remained available throughout.

Now, Brendan’s immediate problem is different: how to create a partnership from this group capable of facing Hearts and Atletico Madrid over the next six days.  Given Cameron is certain to start, that makes the two players he has partnered in central defence this season the only realistic options: Liam and Maik.

Coincidentally, Cameron has played exactly one and a half games with each.  Recency matters.  Cameron and Maik faced Ross County and Aberdeen in August, Cameron and Liam partnered against Lazio and Kilmarnock this month.  We have to go into the next three fixtures: Hearts, Atletico and Hibs, with Cameron and Liam.  Thereafter, all bets are off.

Agree three weeks gives Maik time to get fitter ….

… But how does Gustaf feel about it?

  3. Just catching up whilst enjoying a cold beer on the balcony with a view of the sea in el cotillo.

    No storm in fuerteventura.

I’ll be hunting for a pub to watch the game whilst the boss isn’t looking.

  4. My DA is 89 years of age and is currently in a Care Home in Glasgows west end ( Yoker ).

He has been completely blind for a few years now, and greatly misses watching CELTIC on TV etc. This is a man who DROVE to Lisbon and back in 1967, in Two Private Cars with his Taxi Drivers work mates.

He still listens to Celtic games on his wee Radio/Tranny from his Care Home, and I have now purchased a Digital Radio for him to listen to. The NEW Radio is still here in my home, and I am hoping to get it to my DA asap .

I spoke to him on the Phone this morning, and he ” Thanked” me for the Radio gift……..He then said ” He was so happy to hear my voice once again, and ALL he wants from me is….” A SMILE” !

He also asked me if we were ” STLL PALS” ?

He asked me this because he remembers how upset I was ( Aged 11 _), when he told me that I couldnt go to Lisbon with him and his mates. Back then, my DA told me ” Its TOO LONG a journey for a wee Bhoy” to be driving there and back, and that IF he had been going by Plane, he WOULD have taken me ?

I told him that he was telling LIES…..as on his his return from Lisbon, I got to hear about ALL the STRIP CLUBS him and his mates went to !

He also had me guess WHO his ALL TIME Favourite Celtic Player was….I guessed correctly, as it was/is CHARLIE TULLY.

My auld DA really cheered me up this morning, and hopefully I cheered him up also ?

    He said I did.

He was friendly back in the day especially with BIG BILLY, and other Lisbon Lions. My DA was the Ticket Convenor for the Glasgow Hackney Taxi Drivers Celtic Supporter Club, so he got to meet ALL of the Lisbon Lions at Supporter Club Functions.

The Player of the Year Award 1967 from the Glesga Taxi Drivers Supporters Club, went to RONNIE SIMPSON.

The Taxi Drivers presented RONNIE with a MUSICAL DECANTER Set, that was made in the shape/form of a very old Railway Locomotive from the Wild West….An IRON HORSE……..as the Indians called it.

I have always been grateful to have known my DA…..as he was able to GET Match Tickets for ANY Celtic game back in the day…

    LOL

  5. Scales may not be the long term partner but its undoubtedly his jersey right now.

Dropping him would be unwarranted and a needless risk.

Thanks for your good wishes ,T and yes, now that my ailment has been diagnosed, the treatment is working well and I feel much better.I will feel better stilll if The Huns drop points and we don`t :-))

  7. I agree with those who feel Greg Taylor is a pretty decent full-back and that makes me think that a back four of Johnston,CC-V, A.N Other and Taylor will be as good as any we have had for years.

O`Riley,Calmac and Reo are also all excellent players and our front three are a dangerous triumvirate so, all in all, things are looking good.

PS ….and I am also happy with Joe Hart as our custodian.

  9. Reading ff they’re mental, apparently the plan is to win the next ten games during which we drop points, they then beat us at Celtic Park and go top!!

    easy this football malarkey.

  10. Recency for me only matters if you are doing the job well recently and Scales has (other than the occasional lapse / howler pass at Livi) done a great job with some solid defending and his composure on the ball, forward passing and the balance he gives being a lefty all being good for me.

Unless Rocky in training is defending better whilst pinging balls about like VVD in his pomp or unless he has more of an asset fitting to an opponent / game strategy (pace, whatever) I don’t think you can drop Scales without sending the wrong message.

Agree with An Dun, he might not be the long term solution but he is doing a fine job just now and should be rewarded by keeping his place.

  11. Nawrocki is not in the European squad so he cannot play in the Athletico game. Even more reason that Scales should start.

  12. Afternoon all.

That post made my day !

  16. Meanwhile, former ex-Grade One referee Steven Conroy has warned Don Robertson he faces an intense atmosphere when he referees the clash with Hibs. It will be the first time Roberston has been the man in the middle for a Rangers game since taking charge of the defeat to Celtic.

Maybe one of the new CB`s but it`s OK, you can put as many as you want in your team :-))

I like the look of Luis Palma but haven`t seen enough of him yet and I have big hopes for Liel Abada.

  19. Re The weather.

The biggest calamity for some is that my local pub shut its doors at 4pm today !!

  20. yeah paul67- there’s a mini rebuild coming our way with the return of ccv – who’d be a manager!

  21. In a nutshell, I am saying, if we can keep them, we have players who could make this a very exciting ( and successful) Celtic team.

  22. Anyway, as high tide approaches, I am going out for a wee look at the Forces of Nature.

    Cheerio for now.
