Referee lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour? Watch your back, Celtic

1441

Well done to the Daily Record for revealing that SFA referee, Eddie Smith, was the policeman who reported Celtic fans to Uefa for singing offensive songs against Rennes last month.  Smith was one of the referees who declined to make his services available as referees went on strike last season while Celtic took-on the SFA amid accusations of lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour and cover-ups among referees at the association.  He is no longer on the Grade 1 list.

Following the strike the SFA Head of Referee Administration was removed from his post and referee, Dougie MacDonald, who was accused of lying to Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, resigned, prompting then-Celtic chairman, Dr John Reid, to say the club felt vindicated in raising their concerns.

Vindicated, no doubt, but with more than a few feeling bitter towards the club.

While the Daily Record can reflect on some good work today, bizarrely, the Scotsman newspaper accused Celtic fans of sectarian chanting at the Rennes game, something even police-gossip, Eddie Smith, didn’t accuse them of.

Why stop at accusations of sectarian behaviour?  If the Scotsman are going to be ridiculous, why not accused Celtic fans of genocide and treason?  Better still, just say lots of them have funny names, go to strange schools but will never ascent to the British throne.

Celtic have 123-years of non-sectarian history, it is downright offensive to suggest otherwise.

Well done Paul for getting on BBC Scotland and getting your point across. Good to hear that Celtic are asking for clarification from both UEFA and Strathclyde Police as to the nature of the accusations made against the Celtic support on November 3. Suffice to say that Inspector McKnacker has his own little agenda here, which as Canamalar stated earlier has probably more to do with the Football Related Offences Bill than with anything else. Let the Glasgow Police defend their accusations, in public if possible, in Europe if not.

Well .well we are an embarrassment to Scotland now ,will be interesting to see what is said if we are found not guilty .

Also very interesting that we are the first to be done under the new bill (that is not law yet I believe)and it is pursued in a Euro game .When was the bill made law and has no other club in Scotland fell foul of the bill .

  3. Seville67,

You would not be running with this weeks hun agenda if the SFA docked points for sectarian singing. I.e the huns.

You would not be running with this weeks hun agenda if the polis choose to arrest those that participated in it. They cannot as it means arresting huns.

Why the extra enthusiasm for this yet to be implemented legislation ?

Read Scott Kennys views after the Manchester riots and tell me he is not a hun apologist.

    Isn’t that right Mr Gibbons

  7. Eddie Smith:

Pretty sad performance actually, irrespective of background or supposed allegiances, more like unprofessional handling of a situation supposed to be within the remit of a Match Commander. No courtesy shown to Home Club.

Open your eyes people, it can be dressed up as IRA chanting but it’s us they want gone, and trust me when I tell you that the goat people have powers we should fear, they are only flexing just wait till they clamp down.

Just around the corner folks, only for some I may add.

  10. Incredible that they wait over a hundred years to report ‘offensive singing’, despite what has gone on before, in criminal terms, and some in the Celtic Support queue up all day long to pontificate and lecture, whilst to jumping on the bandwagon bashing.

“I genuinely believe that some old songs are not worth singing– and there are plenty that we can and do sing– especially about oppression. The day Celtic fans don’t sing about oppression is the day we will take to the field wearing Royal blue and orange hoops! ”

It’s this point that’s crucial. This is one of the objectives of this multi-purpose agenda under way at the moment. The next stage after this would be a renewed attack on the Fields of Athenrye and the Flag flying at the stadium, let alone songs of oppression. Some would dismiss this as nonsense if it wasn’t for the fact that such attacks have already been made in the past.

That’s why it needs contested at the moment, not accepted. At the moment we’re at the receiving end of a well-constructed propaganda attack. To suddenly respond to it and act on it, to please the attackers, would be a betrayal of those values that you’re talking about. The so-called IRA chants in the Celtic Symphony have been reducing significantly in volume in recent years anyway – so regardless of anyone’s opinion on it, or how offensive they find it, it has been on its way out for some time – while the songs of hatred and racism from several other clubs have increased dramatically, and the effects of this being allowed (encourged?) are there to be seen on the streets and in the Sectarian Crime Stats…..wherever they are.

I understand your point is that we should minimise the targets our enemies have in their sights, but it’s crucial to appreciate that they will quickly find more, unless we fight the major point on this issue, which is that political expression and free speech, regardless of how offensive they are, are a right, and do not equate to songs of hate, racism and religious bigotry.

  14. Offensive chanting….?

    “Illicit” chanting…?

Offensive chanting, every football club in the world I would expect at some point can be found to have fans singing offensive songs which of course only become offensive if someone is offended and reports it, then it’s a matter of law to decide if there is offence. Now that’s a minefield for prosecution lawyers and potentially opens the floodgates for other offensive chants being brought to the courts.

“Illicit” chanting now there’s a thing singing songs about Irish republicanism or the IRA will not get you arrested in the Republic of Ireland I would assume so will this charge be solely a Scottish issue i.e. only in Scotland can your club be sanctioned by Uefa for chanting Republican/IRA songs.

There is a hell of a lot of republics in Europe with citizens who sing the odd republican song

This is going to be a headache for Uefa and the only outcome I can see is not guilty for CFC unless they intend to take this one on pan Europa and ban all political songs, which of course is impossible considering some are national anthems.

I can understand why CFC are asking for clarification of the charge, its woolly and any sanction unenforceable without a precedent within a Euro nations own national law.

The cop involved in reporting this will end up with egg on his face imo, he would have been better advised going through the proper channels above him before he let his personally offended judgement get the better of his practical legal nous.

  15. Will BBC Scotland, the SFA and bigoted wee polis try and get Ireland done for offensive celebrations when we commemorate rebellion in 2016

The songs are just a smokescreen they hate us because of who we are and because we are here

I voted SNP at scottish election as i refuse to vote for any unionist parties who propose tory policies. The ideal for me was vote SNP, get independence, the labour party in scotland returns to its left of centre roots, vote labour next time. Not now, I’ll just not bother voting.

  18. Hamiltontim @ 18:57

I believe that Celtic as a club and and any supporter purchasing a ticket for a game at Celtic Park held under the auspices of UEFA do so so on the understanding that UEFA,s code of conduct will be followed

So I suppose that’s a No to being entitled to sing political songs at matches held under the the auspices of UEFA

Suppose its like I am entitled to have alcoholic drink at Babbitys while I an not entitled to have one on the viewing platforms at Celtic Park

I am all for free speech. I really mean for ALL free speech.

If some people want the world to know that they hate this organisation or that or this ethnic group or that or this political route or that then I’d rather hear it. I think I am empowered by knowing.

Is it better the state (never an impartial entity no matter the strengths of consitutions etc) interferes and determines which weirdo can be heard and which can’t? Was the UK best served by not gagging Oswald Mosely – for sure. Was the UK best served by censoring Gerry Adams etc with voice overs etc – certainly not.

Laws of the land can deal with the real criminal evidence based excesses.

The SNP legislation is a nonsense which will be proven over time though it will cause hurt to someone meantime.

Having got that off my chest and stepped off my free speech soap box….. could someone help solve a puzzle and tell me WHY singing pro IRA songs at Celtic Park is appropriate, useful, inspiring or important? What is the motivation (other than its a right)?

I DON’T THINK I’VE SEEN ANYONE ANSWER THIS???

  21. What is the Stars on

    Songs/Police Reports/Uefa Investigations/Celtic in trouble

All a load of nonsense. One big fat red herring.Best to ignore it all and not waste your time worrying about it

Come Dec 8th it will be case closed, nothing to report, all quiet on the UEFA front and back to “Celtic star in car park row with 10 year old ” or some such nonsense

However there is a major story concerning a Glasgow Football Club (who have already had their troubles with Uefa)

Indeed they could actually be put out of business.

But sure who wants to hear about that

  22. Paul67,

Good to see you on the ole bigotted BBC.

Could anyone else who saw the BBC local news put my mind at rest: was Spiers “sporting” one of their ties? Looked very much like it.

  23. Scarcely credible this prefabricated nonsense is being talked about when we still have the Oranje Ordure at large…….

  24. mickbhoy1888

I had asked you what you thought of Let the people sing?

Only ask as this to could be deemed by some to be offensive or illicit, but is routinely played at Celtic Park. It’s going to be a minefield for UEFA to decide on.

  25. Offensive chanting? Flawed anti-sectarian legislation?

So where do the authorities stand on orange marches?

Not offensive? Not sectarian? Not a much bigger problem than a few people in a football stadium?

Some people need to get real if they want to be taken seriously.
