Remarkable statistic illuminates Armstrong’s rise

307

There was only a minute between Celtic’s second and third goals against Partick Thistle on Friday evening but for that moment, a remarkable statistic had currency. Stuart Armstrong scored three and assisted two of Celtic’s six previous goals in the league. This is a level beyond an incredible upgrade in form.

Watching Stuart’s blossoming in recent weeks, you still get he’s been playing within himself for much of the last two years. It could be that the inverted-left-winger role didn’t suit him, or that the step up to the pressures of playing for Celtic inhibited him to the extent that the levels of confidence necessary to perform were not to be found.

Even now, watching his body language on the field, and in interview, he looks like he’s still finding his way. I’m pretty sure there’s more to come from him, given the necessary support.

  1. I’m away, before ‘gg comes on with the NFL scores.

Record and fast forward past all the breaks/ time-outs/ messages from our sponsors is the way to go there. Unlike here though, the pundits actually analyse the game intelligently, with interesting insights to tactics etc, and know what they are talking about, for the most part.

    I think!

  2. Was delighted when Ronnie signed SA, then horrified when he was given a bit part role as a left winger – well done Brendan for correcting this tactical blunder…and I also think GMS’s career is about to be resurrected.

    The Wire.

  4. The only way James McCarthy will sign, and I hope he does, is if he tells Everton he only wants to move to us and rejects any move elsewhere. The transfer fee will then drop or they will have an unhappy player that the manager doesn’t want on their books. I think we will go beyond our current record transfer fee for him, whether or not it’s enough time will tell.

GMS just needs his confidence built back up, the same as Armstrong. GMS should have scored against Man City but didn’t have the confidence to shoot first time when he was put through . He made a great run but dithered with the shot allowing the keeper to make an easy save. I think you’ll see a different player later in the season under Brendan’s guidance, and he’ll be knocking in chances like that for fun.

  7. VP- Hope all good with you W, i thought Breaking Bad was good but overated, the 2nd series was mince, it picked up after that. The Sopranos was so good because there was 8-10 characters as well as TS.HH

  8. G67- McCarthy overpriced due to EPL money, i think we have a chance with Paddy Roberts as Pep won’t want to sell him to an EPL club, as he will haunt them.

  9. McCarthy would be a great signing, but if there’s an EPL club in for him (and it’s difficult to believe there won’t be) then Everton won’t sell him to us for less.

Roberts would be overpriced by Man City. The model that they, and Chelsea, have is to hoover up young talented players with potential with the intention of selling on later. In most cases they have no intention of keeping them. They loan them out for a few years and hope their value increases so they can make a profit. It’s all a scam to help get around FFP rules.

Even if we could afford him I don’t think he has shown enough, consistently to justify a large transfer fee. Forrest has been a far better player this season, something I never thought I would say at the end of last season.

  11. Sopranos. # 1

    Breaking Bad # 2

    The Wire # 3

All of them exceptional in character building and plot narrative. The Wire only falls down on a really predictable ending.

The US has led the way in this type of drama in recent years, True Detective and Atlantic Boardwalk are other examples.

I believe all of them take inspiration from Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction.

    James McCarthy ?

Broony or Stuart who would you drop……

If we did have a few million to spend it would be Snodgrass for me……

  13. G67- agree with most of that, i can see MC giving Roberts a new contract and loaning him out again, i would have given Forrest and a few others away at the end of last season, i think Roberts has got his confidence back, u think quick players are reluctant to go flat out in case it goes again HH

  14. I’ll be over next Saturday with some Association of Irish CSC calendars which celebrate us winning the European Cup fifty years ago. They are £7 each so if you would like one I can meet up before or after the match.

Leave a message here and I’ll make arrangements.

You’d never put PL’s job in jeopardy ;-). Snodgrass available on a Free in the summer. Can sign pre contract in January. I would sign him, another attacking option from midfield when Roberts returns to City.

McCarthy would replace Bitton in the squad and would be fighting Brown and Armstrong for centre midfield positions. Competition for places and an upgrade in quality, especially for Europe where midfield is where we are lacking most.

  18. Or ‘In Plain Sight’ even………..

Anyway, here’s the deal. I have to watch X Factor final (haven’t seen a single minute of the series so far) and Mrs Baldie has to watch the Scottish Cup Final in May 17…..

She doesn’t know it yet but clearly she gets the better deal.

  25. GERRYFRAEBRIG, doubt that the fans pay PL’s wages or even all of the player’s wages. Sponsorship money, TV money, Champions League money etc take care of that. Home game match money is small beer to the rest.
