Result gives platform for progress

1761

Last night’s win didn’t look on the cards until the opening goal; Astra were passing the ball better and creating as many chances as Celtic.  It looked like the game we expected – without Commons or Guidetti. However, we find ourselves top of the group with 7 points from 9 at the halfway point, having recorded a draw away to top seed Salzburg.

There’s still a lot of work to do, a win away at Astra next time out in no way guarantees qualification, but we stand an excellent chance of progressing and a decent chance of topping the group.

Having thumped Ross County at the weekend there was a notion we’d turned a corner, which fed some of the frustration last night, despite the result.  What we saw was very poor passing from a disjointed team.  Players were receiving the ball in too little space, where options were already closed.  This impacted the effectiveness on Callum McGregor and Mikael Lustig in particular, but it seemed when every Celtic player looked up there wasn’t a good pass on.

This is all a consequence of change.  We look disjointed because we are disjointed.  We’re disjointed because we’re rebuilding.

The relevant questions are:

Do we need to rebuild?
Are we making progress?

Yes, we need to rebuild.  The squad, tactics, training and other processes are all going through change.  For so long we watched Celtic squads remain constant and grow old (under Martin O’Neill), or out tactics become rigid (under Martin and Gordon Strachan), to the point that we were crying out for some experimentation.

The above is seldom disputed but the question of progress is more important.  Right now Celtic need results.  They need to survive in the Europa League long enough to test and improve their passing, movement, instincts and, where necessary, squad.

Last night’s win wasn’t pretty but it was vitally important.  The next challenge for this team is also important; we need to go to Romania and put on the kind of performance we did in Salzburg.  If we can do that, we’ll have earned a platform to build on.

Caesar & the Assassin, the accounts of Billy McNeill and Davie Hay as Celtic managers, is available below.

Billy and Davie will both sign the early orders we get to them, more here.

  1. DD,

John Peel was very important to music. Sad loss, and typical of today’s wee fascist society, there’ll never be a replacement for him.

While we witness the death of film, football and music, I suspect that writers will be the next target. As I’m not one that reads books at all now, it’s possible that has already happened?

I’m going to revert to writing political messages on the rocks in Latin before I’m locked away for 50 years for vandalism and an SP30.

  3. PJBhoynyc,

The PLC are just the bottom feeding end of the scale, all the restrictions being placed on evolution and civilisation come from the top.

But at the very least as Cetlic supporters, we can do our bit by getting this shower of thieves out of our club.

Not going to happen though – look at the “Yes” movement here in Scotland. Powerful, but just no enough. I’m tempted to move to Iceland and live in the hills.

We’re not marching towards a fascist state, we’ve been in it for decades, and they’re upping their game as they can smell the apathy.

I pity the uniformed idiots who won’t see the error of their ways until their dying minutes.

FOR many of those employed in football, there is no greater irritation than finding themselves being sniped at from the sidelines by those who once earned their money and reputation from the game.

It is not uncommon to come across current players or managers who fume indignantly at criticism directed their way from ex-professionals now engaged in media punditry, their reasoning usually that they should have a better understanding of the problems they face.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila has not been short of those type of detractors during his tenure so far. Two of the club’s former heroes, John Hartson and Chris Sutton, have been among his most voluble critics so far. The latter was especially withering in his condemnation of Deila and his team while working for BT Sport at Thursday night’s stuttering 2-1 Europa League victory over Astra Giurgiu at Celtic Park.

But Deila is not only completely unfazed by Sutton’s verbal attack, he insists he will never have a problem with anyone who holds a negative opinion of him or his work. The Norwegian coach remains convinced his methods will bear fruit at Celtic where he says the most intense scrutiny will come from within.

  24. Twice in the last few weeks I have gone to live football – a rare thing for me these days for a variety of reasons that I will not bore you with. My time was the 80’s following Celtic home and away.

It got me thinking about the whole experience. It was expensive, the second time I took my young daughter and would she go back? She hasn’t mentioned the experience once since the day.

To me the whole day out needs to be looked at. What are German clubs doing right? Read somewhere this week that people from the UK are often travelling to see Borussia Dortmund for as little as the cost of a match ticket here.

Time for some radical actions in Scotland. Celtic are a huge and colourful club that could be attracting people from all over if the matchday experience was what it was about. My daughter’s comment that stuck in my head was watching the Celtic fans “partying” at Ross County and how she wished she was part of that.

Saddened, but not surprised, to hear Mark Wotte’s parting comment that the SFA are effectively stuck in the past.

So what to do? Positive and constructive ideas needed.

In the 80’s I knew what I was doing on a Saturday because it meant going to the football. Times have changed and new ideas are needed.
