Result gives platform for progress

1761

Last night’s win didn’t look on the cards until the opening goal; Astra were passing the ball better and creating as many chances as Celtic.  It looked like the game we expected – without Commons or Guidetti. However, we find ourselves top of the group with 7 points from 9 at the halfway point, having recorded a draw away to top seed Salzburg.

There’s still a lot of work to do, a win away at Astra next time out in no way guarantees qualification, but we stand an excellent chance of progressing and a decent chance of topping the group.

Having thumped Ross County at the weekend there was a notion we’d turned a corner, which fed some of the frustration last night, despite the result.  What we saw was very poor passing from a disjointed team.  Players were receiving the ball in too little space, where options were already closed.  This impacted the effectiveness on Callum McGregor and Mikael Lustig in particular, but it seemed when every Celtic player looked up there wasn’t a good pass on.

This is all a consequence of change.  We look disjointed because we are disjointed.  We’re disjointed because we’re rebuilding.

The relevant questions are:

Do we need to rebuild?
Are we making progress?

Yes, we need to rebuild.  The squad, tactics, training and other processes are all going through change.  For so long we watched Celtic squads remain constant and grow old (under Martin O’Neill), or out tactics become rigid (under Martin and Gordon Strachan), to the point that we were crying out for some experimentation.

The above is seldom disputed but the question of progress is more important.  Right now Celtic need results.  They need to survive in the Europa League long enough to test and improve their passing, movement, instincts and, where necessary, squad.

Last night’s win wasn’t pretty but it was vitally important.  The next challenge for this team is also important; we need to go to Romania and put on the kind of performance we did in Salzburg.  If we can do that, we’ll have earned a platform to build on.

Caesar & the Assassin, the accounts of Billy McNeill and Davie Hay as Celtic managers, is available below.

Billy and Davie will both sign the early orders we get to them, more here.

  8. DD,

I honestly think that is the best live music recording I’ve ever heard.

A major point being that at the 9th minute, it’s the Egyptian percussion that energises it. Traditional musical instruments accelerating the energy of the two of the most talented, genius rock musician ever. Absolutely outstanding.

Re Led Zep, what amazes me about them is that they all played together as 14 yr old boys, yet produced some of the most original, iconic rock music ever. Even their folk music style was top dollar – complex, yet raw brilliant music. It’s bearing all this in mind that I think they must indeed have sold their souls.

Just watched a programme on Robert Plant (whose autograph I have) – didn’t know he lost his wee boy at 5 yrs old back in the 70s.

Anyhoos, music is pish these days, but my excitement levels are raised by the impending Pink Floyd album. Cannae wait :)

    But what amazing music.

  9. I was never into Led Zep but the amount of musicians that have inspired me that quote them as influences suggest that I owe them a thing or three.

    Hail Hail.

  10. Vespacide,

    I’d recommend a re-visit amigo.

I was always a Pink Floyd man and nothing else.

But Led Zep were something else.

Anyway, not quite PF, but close enough. Dave Gilmour:

Live at a concert he did for Solidarity’s birthday in Gdansk. My favourite guitarist in the world continually sticks it to the man. Love it.

  11. BMCUW @ 02:51,

There we go. The marketeers release the youtube version to encourage promotion for the new album.

    A bit annoying that.

Really annoys me the way the music industry works. From top to bottom. At the bottom we have the PRS sending made up bills to churches telling them they owe them money if they play CDs at funerals.

This is a nonsense. The PRS are a shower of London bankers and lawyers who saw the chance for easy money.

Some musicians thinks it’s great because they get a cheque for £5 every three months.

A friend of mine, who was very influential in folk music, spent 2 years taking them to court with his own money, and was eventually appointed to the board of the MU for his efforts before he died last year.

I’m obviously on a rant, so indulge me :)

When you watch one of today’s “respected artists” performing on TV, take a look at the monkeys dancing around with guitars around their necks. It’s pish, and creating a real divide between live music and recorded music (I’d describe the latter as “sounds”).

Even Jools Holland’s show is full of pish like that, along with average bands playing live. He sometimes uncovers some gems, but these are rare.

    John Peel is sorely missed.
