Resurrection of defensive bedrock, work done in your name

980

The bedrock Celtic built their record-breaking league win on last was the defence; we went months without conceding, serious chances for opponents were written up lustily.  A large part of the summer shambles was the contrasting nature of our defensive play; Legia Warsaw scored six but they also missed a hatful.

While our results have improved in recent weeks it’s the defensive record which has shown the most marked up-lift.  We’ve conceded only twice in seven games, a ricochet against Astra and that goal against Hamilton.  By contrast, we kept only a solitary clean sheet in the seven games prior to this run.

On the surface, we looked shaky in defence for the latter parts of the game against Inverness on Saturday, but while there is still work to do, the defence can be encouraged that they are able to withstand sustained pressure – and that they can rely on their keeper, when necessary.

A couple of action points for you:

Magners are donating £18,300 to the Celtic Foundation.  The money will go to the four areas the Foundation work: Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty, in proportion to how fans nominate those areas.  To participate, tweet @MagnersUK with one of the following hashtags: #Health, #Equality, #Learning or #Poverty.

Magners have been a great help to our campaign to build a fourth CQN school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in recent weeks, so I’m keen we support and encourage this initiative.  £18,300 is a huge bonus for the Foundation, they will do great work with it.

The Foundation are full on with their Christmas strategy at the moment.  This year money will be split between those who look after the homeless and vulnerable, and individual families – identified by grassroots organisations, to help them buy gifts for kids and put a Christmas meal on the table.

This work is being done in your name, so make sure you’re aware of it.

The inaugural Foundation ladies’ lunch event, Ghirls for Good, takes place on Saturday 13 December, proceeds towards the Christmas Appeal.  If you qualify……. Book here.

I’ve heard a few people in the media stating that Celtic could be defeated when they play “the the” because most of the players haven’t experience Celtic vs Alter Ego.

If you look at the Celtic line up when they won the last ever came against Rangers 3-0 we had 5 players in the starting line up. Izzy, Mulgrew, Matthews, Brown and Commons.

So that argument is bollocks then.

    Hail Hail

    ++++++++++++

Sleekit Ally also said he has more experience of these games than anyone at either club.

SPFL IN INCONSISTENCY AND FAVOURABLE TREATMENT TO SEVCO SHOCKER:-

Airdrie were placed into administration and then liquidation by David Murray for non-payment of a £20,000 debt in 2002.

A new club, Airdrie United was formed, and gained membership to the league by buying out Clydebank`s registration.

Probably buoyed by Sevco`s shameless claims to have acquired the history of the former Rangers, Airdrie United earlier this year claimed to have paid money to acquire the badge and title of the liquidated and defunct club Airdrieonians. They are now calling themselves Airdrieonians and are being referred to as such on the SPFL website.

Nonetheless the SPFL website states that they were founded in 2002. (Although it does curiously also state that this club won a 2nd division title in 1975/76, no mean feat for a club that would not be founded for another 26 years!)

    http://spfl.co.uk/clubs/airdrieonians/

However, the SPFL website appears to be giving special treatment to the club set up by Charles Green in 2012 and officially registered as Rangers International. The SPFL website states that they were founded in 1872 and has allocated to them honours won by the Rangers club that was liquidated in 2012 (many of these honours of course were won whilst using unregistered players on undisclosed side contracts).

    http://spfl.co.uk/clubs/rangers/

There`s some questions I`d like the footballing authorities in Scotland to answer:-

    1. Both Rangers and Airdrie were liquidated and the clubs had to be registered as new entities with the Scottish footballing authorities. Why then does the SPFL list the club in Airdrie as having been founded in 2002, but states that the club currently operating out of Ibrox Stadium was formed in 1872? This is inconsistent and looks like favourable treatment to the Ibrox side.

    2. How can the SPFL claim that a club that they recognise as being founded in 2002 won a trophy in 1975/76?

    3. Why were the current owners of the Airdrie club only able to “buy” the title and badge of the defunct Airdrieonians club after the liquidation of the former Rangers? There were 10 years between the liquidation of Airdrie and the liquidation of Rangers, surely ample time for the owners of the Airdrie United club to buy the title and badge of the former Airdrieonians (assuming such a phony transaction is actually allowed in the real world).

This seems to me like a deal conjured up between Chuckles Green, Fat Controller Ballantyne and David Longmuir, with input from Neil Doncaster. A joint pact along the lines of “if you say we`re not deid, you say you`re club`s not deid as well.”

    4. If clubs claim they are able to buy the title and badge of their predecessor club (a la Airdrie) or the history and trophies won by their predecessor club (a la Sevco) then what incentive is there for Scottish football clubs to avoid liquidation?

Surely all clubs now have licence to spend beyond their means in an arms race to buy up players they can`t afford to win trophies, secure European qualification, then they can happily default on debts, go through liquidation, secure in the knowledge that they can stiff the creditors, buy back their history badge etc and start the cycle all over again?

In other words Scottish football becomes a non-sporting, unwatchable charade built on a never ending cycle of debt and cheating.

This is why our club should be making a stand as regards the history claimed by the Zombies. If they don`t then Scottish football including Celtic is well and truly burst.

Due to working away and when working at home having to work on the days Celtic were playing, I stopped buying a season ticket a few years go. At first I really missed going, especially to the big euro games.

As time passed though I found that most games which weren’t on Sky/BBC were to be found on the internet. After a while I became used to making do with dodgy streams, occasionally I’d purchase the odd ticket but made no commitment to attend on a regular basis.

You get used to not attending and learn to live with the memories of great days and nights at Celtic Park, you still regard yourself as a fan and supporter who hurts just as much as anyone when we get beat but you begin to lose that personal attatchment to the players and club just a little bit.

I never fell out of love with the club or more importantly the game of football so when my best mate, who is a Dundee Utd fan aske if I fancied going to few lower league games with him, just an excuse for 2 mates to spend their saturday afternoons together. After doing this for a few months we decided to visit all 42 senior grounds in Scotland together.

On part of this journey round the grounds we visited Peterhead, who were playing Celtic in the cup. That day brought home to me what I was missing and I started attending Celtic games on a more regular basis, this has led to me now becomming a season ticket holder again. I have to say that dispite our indifferent early season form I’m loving it, I look forward to every part of the matchday, from CQN corner to the losing my hard earned on 1st goal scorer.

I still go to games with my mate, we attend junior games on alternate saturdays. He wrote a blog about our travels round the 42, for those interested here’s the link to his ramblings.
