Rivals fall

113

It’s not often Newco are happy to do Celtic a favour but they obliged yesterday. Conceding an early penalty and red card was too much for St Mirren, our nearest challengers, as they slipped seven points behind the champions.

A resurgent Reo Hatate inspired Celtic to a comfortable win over Kilmarnock a day earlier, ensuring Celtic arrived at the October international break in an historically comfortable position.

Brendan Rodgers has plenty to consider over the next two weeks, in particular, how to better the gap between domestic and European results. That will take all of this experience.

how anyone could hand on heart say that it was a deliberate hand ball to stop a goalscoring opportunity ( not more so to stop the ball going into the net ) from the tv coverage must be some sort of super hero with magical eyes.

The offender who handles the ball in the box does not need to know that he is stopping a goalscoring opportunity until the referee shows him the red card.

Strain, facing goal, clearly moved his hand backward to push the ball behind him away from goal. It was a deliberate action.

Whether or not he knew there was a Rangers player looking at a tap in is completely irrelevant. Deliberate hand ball preventing a goalscoring opportunity is a red card.

Now and again Rangers do get justified penalty awards. Get over it.

PS. One poster whom I will not name, yesterday posted as follows…

Just logged in to see huns winning with yet another penalty. Celtic need to speak out about this blatant cheating.

This poster hadn’t even seen the incident but wanted the board to complain about a penalty in a game not even involving Celtic.

The UK and Republic of Ireland are set to be announced as hosts of the 2028 European Championships at a Uefa meeting in Switzerland on Tuesday.

The five-nation bid is now running unopposed after Turkey withdrew from the process last week.

Turkey merged their Euro 2032 bid with Italy in July and are set to be confirmed as joint-hosts for that tournament.

Both bids are running unopposed but still need official approval by Uefa.

“These are exciting times and we have a very compelling Euro 2028 proposal for Uefa,” said last week’s joint statement from the five national associations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

“Our bid will be groundbreaking for the men’s Euros and will deliver lasting legacies across the whole of the UK and Ireland.”

Matches at the 2028 tournament are set to be held at 10 different grounds, including Glasgow’s Hampden Park, Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, Dublin’s Aviva Stadium and Wembley in London.

Belfast’s Casement Park and Everton’s Bramley-Moore Dock, the former unbuilt while the latter is still under construction, are also included in the bid.

Will controversial Casement Park be ready for Euros?

The Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales have never hosted a major tournament.

  4. Excellant result on Saturday and just like the aftermath of Feynoord there was no hangover following the huge disappointment of last Wednesday night. By all accounts the Hoops were in top form especially Reo back to all his old tricks with a wonderful goal. Young Palma who looked good to me on his first viewing against the Dutch, seems to have the knack of scoring spectacular goals. Fair play to Liam Scales he has come into the team under severe pressure admirably filling that critical central defensive position tenaciously and with no shortage of skill.

Why is the protocal regarding head injury in football still in the bottle and sponge dark ages. Good to read a sports journo last week focused on this subject. The kicks to the head on Matt O’Riley, CCV and deliberate elbow to the head on Reo would have been red cards in other sports.

  5. I am rereading Ian McCallums books detailing the Glasgow Irish Celtic and the great war.

The club was political while playing and welcoming all. But the full spectrum of liberal and socialist views were expressed

Marley himself being an old school Edwardian. Loyal and military.

    Great reads to ponder on

  6. One of the sadest things is that Netanyahu was scoring ‘own goals’ which threatened to undermine him given time.

This now gives him the Thatcher type justification meaning he will have the centre realign behind him. A cause celebre …… it will be some time before any of those protesting against the extreme right in Israel will gain traction now.

  7. I have opinions very similar to a lot on here re Palestine, I don’t do politics on here,I seen a couple of videos today, which I won’t post here, looked like an Oliver Stone/Steven Spielberg movie, but it was real people. I agree with the Club Statement, we are a football club, not a political party.

  8. I hope we withdraw Callum after the Spain game on Thursday, last thing he needs is a meaningless friendly game.

  9. Just a wee silly aside. Was in Erskine shop a hour ago and an old fella easily 80 wanders in a masonic necker ceif and big broach type thing on his lapel.

Not very secret. Tales all sorts I suppose

  10. Bada:

“. I agree with the Club Statement, we are a football club, not a political party.”

Whilst that is patently true, I think it is also true that we `are more than a football club`.

    Cheerio for now.

Re Calmac. I agree totally. After a very unusually diminshed start, he has become like the wondefylly consistent Calmac again. No need to play in Friendlies.

  13. HS- We will always have political history in our club, but it’s not for the Club, via some of the support, to get involved in current day wars IMO

  14. Good to see the Euros awarded to the British Isles – I.e. UK & Ireland – but Peter Lawwell’s warning must be heeded in club football – too much means ‘burn out’ – like in so many things Peter is correct.

“It will be some time before any of those protesting against the extreme right in Israel will gain traction now.”

It may be because of the “liberal” media I consume but I’ve heard a fair amount of criticism of Netanyahu today and suggestions that by refusing to restart peace talks and his aggressive unilateral annexing of occupied territory he made an attack inevitable.

The failure of their intelligence services will have made all Israelis feel much less secure in their own homes, maybe after the retaliation the Israeli people will start wanting more considered approach

Tonight however, I have just watched CNN news, it must be terrifying for everyone involved.

I found this view interesting, not that I subscribe to it, however, it’s always (IMHO) to hear commentary of those who are sadly close to this event..

I promise I will never post in regards to politics and stick to the corrupt SPL.

Banners displayed in a section of Celtic Park prior to Saturday’s game do not represent the views of Celtic Football Club and we disassociate ourselves from them. We condemn the display of such messages at Celtic Park.

Celtic is a football club and not a political organisation. One of our core values from inception is to be open to all regardless of race, colour, politics or creed. That is why the Club has always made clear that political messages and banners are not welcome at Celtic Park, or any match involving Celtic. At a time of loss and suffering for many, it is entirely inappropriate for any group of individuals to use Celtic Park as a vehicle for such messages.

We call on all supporters, regardless of their personal views, to unite in backing our players and the Club while respecting the rights and beliefs of others; particularly those whose lives are affected by violence and hatred.

Well done Celtic – a warning that if not heeded must result in firm action – I welcome this statement. Hail Hail

  22. Good to see the club statement tonight. The events in Israel in the last few days are utterly sickening.

The Green Brigade don’t speak for me in any way shape or from in glorifying “victory” in the slaughtering of innocent Children and women.

These banners are totally inappropriate and Embarrassing.

We all want peace in that region and maybe in some bizarre twist this could bring the end to Hamas and peace talks can resume sometime soon.

On the footie front Saturday was pleasing and we seem now to be moving forward more positively.

Delighted for Palma we now look like we have a player with a decent shot on him that could bring some goals from outside the box for a change

Well done also Liam Scales what a transformation in the lad.

    Enjoy a peaceful night everyone.

  23. There can be no peace talks for the simple reason,Hama’s want the extermination of Israel.Nothing less.Backed by Iran, who want the same thing. There is no starting point,no middle ground, for discussions. The Palestinian people do not have much to thank Hamas for. This maniacal attack was only ever going to end one way.Death and destruction, for Palestinians and Gaza, while Hama’s leaders prayed at Mosque, thousands of miles away.

Not being political or taking sides.Just the truth about the present situation.

  24. With the likes of Netenyahu and the very dislikable (euphemism of the century) UK Israeli ambassador ‘lady’ leading from the front I really fear for and pray for the poor people of Gaza tonight.

And for the poor people captured and their families.

There are no winners in this tragedy.

  25. The Green Brigade is an example of what I would describe as ‘entryism’. Or what Trotsky in the 1930s described as ‘The French Turn’. Not to be confused with the Cruyff turn from the 1970s.

Celtic FC for them represent a platform for their own political views and hankerings. No need to spell out the latter, but the former includes support for any action taken on behalf of the Palestinian peoples, including the attack by Hamas on a musical festival, (whose location was unannounced until just before it took place) South of Tel Aviv, near Kibbutz Reim, three miles or so from the dividing line with Gaza. A murderous onslaught carried out by the armed on the unarmed. Celebrated by Palestinian supporters in London and purported Celtic supporters in Glasgow. Celtic FC had no option but to release a statement today disassociating the Club with the actions of the Green Brigade. Not least because the Home Secretary, no liberal, has threatened “the full force of the law” be used against ” the “glorification of terrorism” an offence specifically listed in the The Terrorism Act 2006. Support the humanitarian efforts of the Charities working in Gaza, they are many and are going to need all the help they can get.

  26. People would do well to remember that israel is a entity that was born out of terrorism.

After the Palestinian uprising of 1987, the PLO accused Hamas and Yassin of acting “with the direct support of reactionary Arab regimes… in collusion with the Israeli occupation.”

Yasser Arafat complained to an Italian newspaper: “Hamas is a creation of Israel, which at the time of Prime Minister Shamir, gave them money and more than 700 institutions, among them schools, universities and mosques.”

Arafat also maintained that Israeli prime minister Rabin admitted to him in the presence of Hosni Mubarak that Israel had supported Hamas.

Essentially, as analyst Ray Hannania pointed out, in “Sharon’s Terror Child”, published in Counterpunch, “undermining the peace process has always been the real target of Hamas and has played into the political ambitions of Likud. Every time Israeli and Palestinian negotiators appeared ready to take a major step forward achieving peace, an act of Hamas terrorism has scuttled the peace process and pushed the two sides apart.”

The Muslim Brotherhood, and its many manifestations like Hamas, Al Qaeda and bin Laden, serve as an ever-present and manufactured “terrorist” threat, used constantly as a pretext to justify repressive measures at home and expanded imperialistic objectives abroad.

    End.

    Abraham Lincoln once said:

“The world is very, very thinly populated with people who can see something for what it truly is but very thickly populated with gullible idiots who will believe anything. The amount of these idiots grow steadily with the sale of every iPhone.”

  27. Can anyone clarify something

I saw 2 banners on Saturday

I never saw anything advocating Hamas or murdering anyone.

One was about rightful resistance against occupation

Usual people in the media and amongst my fellow fans looking to blame anyone expect the apartheid state of Israel

And the board grow a set of balls

  28. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Horrific slaughter carried out in Israel by Hamas.

IMHO – a bunch of elected rabid idealogues on one side fighting a bunch of unelected gangsters on the other.

As is ALWAYS the case, it is the innocent who suffer.

According to UN data across 2008 to 2021 the ratio of Palestinians to Israelis killed in “conflict” is 20:1.

    GDP Per Capita

    Gaza: $900 – $1,500

    Israel: $55,000

    This only ends one way.
