Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

  1. Roddybhoy,

Agree on Moyes. Outstanding manager who was left high and dry at Manure.

Steve Evans? The first genuinely left-field name I’ve seen mentioned…

  2. Odds being cut on Alex Neil: Football’s most ruthless manager and always destined for the top being our next manager.

Problem in getting rid is the cost, every £ it takes to get rid is a £ less for the new coach.

Regardless of the cost, not to get rid of deadwood simply means that we keep digging the hole we are in.

  4. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

    TET – True enough.

As far as I’m concerned – Diego Simeone is the best football manager in the world. Hypothetical, however if Simeone took over at Celtic Park in the morning, and the scouting/signing policy continued on as before – then what difference would it make?

Here Diego, there’s Calton Cole and Kazim-Richards and a host of other dudes, see if ya can get them to play a wee bit of football, cure them of injuries, or better still – transform them into superstars and we’ll sell them on for a profit.

The question of who takes over from Ronny is null and void as far as I’m concerned – If the people in charge continue on as they have previously – then it’s an irrelevance who gets the job.

Lot of names being thrown about. None very exciting.

Sampaoli would be good but was linked with Chelsea so would probably have better options on the table.

Moyes and Rodgers would probably see it as a stepping stone back to the EPL.

Hope it isn’t an Old Firmist but think it almost certainly will be.

I feel bemused and embarrassed reading Bankier and lawwell’s tosh in the PR produced statement re the manager leaving. I pity anyone who remotely buys in to their BS…far less helps peddle it to Celtic fans.

  7. My elderly uncle just emailed me in his usual droll forthright manner.

He said all you need to know about the mess in which we now find ourselves in will be Peter Lawwell’s wage packet posted in the next couple of financials.

Will his earnings reflect a period that was largely, considering our resources, a failure?

Get Moyes in….. he wore the hoops and knows how to organize teams, has great discipline and is prepared. His average league position with the Toffees was 7th over his 10 year tenure. The idiot currently in charge of Everton (Martinez) is a chip off Rony’s block with all this high pressing, high energy, lone striker at home nonsense which most opposing teams eventually figure out. He will be the next one in the EPL out the door, especially if he loses to Liverpool tonight, which he will.

Yip it’s what’s holding us back, the policy has failed, the scouts have failed us bar a couple, but you would expect a couple with all what they have bought.

And I agree re Diego, no coach can make a silk purse etc, they can only do the best they can.

  11. Ronny gone at end of season. should have been Sunday night.

As I posted previously every day he hangs around, a day of Celtic’s future wasted.

Next should be those players who sought to undermine him.

In real terms Celtic is a pretty small concern and everyone at CP will know who these individuals are.

No matter if they are disposed of at fire sale prices they must go. If they refuse to go they must have it spelled out to them that ‘though they will never kick another ball they will be required to fulfil their contracts in matters of training etc.

If Davy Moyes genuinely wants to win trophies as he’s claimed then the Celtic job is ideal for him. Alex Neil? Think he’d do an excellent job. A good knowledge of the championship although we’d struggle to afford even that level of player.

Apparently he was shocked at what he saw on Sunday.

Could this be because he is seldom around to see anything.

For the first time since the early days of Tommy Burns in charge we had a manager who took a genuine interest in the development of young players. Now I have never been a great fan of ‘the development squad, but even I have seen some bone fide progress in that area, with young players actually improving both on and off the field. For that he should be given some credit. Had the team moving in the right direction this time last year, a settled way of playing, unsettled by bit Pete’s scattered gunned money approach to running the club. Memo to Celtic, the dressing room is more important than the board room, we can get by without the latter!

I would think more of them both had they said something like..

”Thanks to Ronny for his contribution and commitment that led to successes we have enjoyed under his management. Unfortunately not all objectives we had hoped to meet have been achieved. For this we all bear an element of responsibility. We wish Ronny every future success and hope that we can all build upon the experiences and learning of the last 2 years.”

I see where you’re coming from but does that not say to prospective managers that if they don’t achieve CL or EL after Christmas they’re out?

It’s a tough one to get spot on I think.

  25. Posted earlier and haven’t had a chance to look back – it was probably ignored.

Anyway, re Warburton and the game at the weekend.

It should be no surprise that they dominated possession really. That’s what his teams do.

Where they have difficulty is breaking down good teams and keeping the back door shut.

In the Championship play offs last year, they got beat home and away by Middlesborough. Boro have a bigger budget and better players but had only 37% possession in these games.

We kept them in front of us and broke effectively, having far more goal scoring chances. If Broonie and Bitton had not been so inept we would have won the game comfortably.

I just hope fans try and understand why, with poorer players, they managed to get high possession stats and don’t demand changes if the next games has a similar stat return – albeit with more goals for us in a resounding victory!!

The board statement today is symptomatic of the poor PR practice at the club.

The final paragraph (I Think) where PL brings the fans into rings like damn nearly every other pronouncement — it is slightly condescending and wholly unecessary in my opinion.
